  • A few thought about wood carving and the age old adage that nothing worth doing happens quickly.
Probably the most important things i try to get across to new carvers is that there are no short cuts and you can't rush things.

Wood carving is largely for the inner peace - and outer as well. Why rush anything at all? What's the hurry? After all, one gets into wood carving because they want some peace, within and about. You put it nicely enough, but I'd treasure my little work of art somewhat higher than the risk of injuring myself. But your point is well taken! Cheers!!

Hi, I have enjoyed your videos, I am just starting out and today i managed to bag some fresh Ash which was being cut as I arrived, I hope it will be okay to start with. I don’t see the need to rush is spoon carving a race ?. I am a needle woman and gardener so one thing i have is patience and have come to the realisation life may be a rat race, hobbies and pastimes should not be otherwise the enjoyment is lost.

Thanks for the video, I totally agree with you. If you want to speed up the process, woodcarving is not the answer. We are not trying to beat a CNC machine.

Good videos, but I ran through them and could not find (or missed altogether) where you taught THE single most important and very first skill anyone interested in woodworking in all of its forms needs to learn- how to sharpen and maintain blades. It should be first on the list in all carving tutorial videos, but is woefully lacking across the board. There is nothing more dangerous to the novice carver than an almost sharp blade. Sharp blades on the order of what Pfeil, Helvie and Flexcut put out are a great starting point. Hamster, I strongly urge you to do a video on sharpening and maintaing blades before you proceed any further on actually teaching carving skills. Your viewers will thank you as will their fingers!
