  • A framework called six thinking hats helps students learn the essential skill of giving and receiving feedback.

Editor’s Note: Edutopia received feedback from our community about the black hat shown in the video. It was our intention to share a helpful classroom practice, and we regret that we didn't realize that the content might be considered racially insensitive. The school featured in the video reached out to us independently and will evolve the practice as a result of the feedback.
The symbolism of the black hat is harmful and must change; we are grateful to the people who pointed it out. We sincerely hope the core ideas can be adapted by those who find it useful as a way to scaffold student feedback.

Some black hat feedback, I think you missed the goal of showing students using the feedback to also feedback into the content knowledge as opposed to the production of the artifacts. Yellow hat, those students have become articulate AF.
Is this a selective school? Either financially or academically?

It's an alternative school, which in this case means that students have to apply to attend. If the school receives more applications than they have spaces available, acceptance is determined via a lottery. Previous academic achievement, standardized test scores, and other information are NOT used to determine acceptance.

Why is the black hat the representative of “Not Working”.? The hat language is a great idea but with the state of the world do we really want to represent black in a negative perspective.... it would really have taken minimal thought to switch the black hat and is meaning to a different color.

I get that, that was my first thought too. I guess that's one of the things we talk about with privilege yeah? More than anything, you just don't realise that something could be an issue. That said, I really like this overall. Any chance to get the students thinking and responding to feedback is golden as far as I'm concerned.

This is a great constructionist idea. However color is subjective and cultural. Ditch the Black n White associations -2020 feedback. Maybe look to Chakras association with color.
