  • I rented a car in Tbilisi, the capital of the country of Georgia and drove to Stepantsminda in the Caucasus Mountains, on the border of Georgia and Russia. From there I decided to get as close as I possibly could to the Russian border.

I follow you since almost 3 years.
This video bout Georgia brings memories on my tourist group trip into ' 82.
I travelld with my parents into a small tourist group from Germany.
On that time, most of travellers must be organized into Tourist groups
I remember, it was not pernittet, to explore privatly the area.
But, anyway- we become contact to one of our tour guide, wichone speaks fluently German( he study in East Gemany he said).
He invite me and my parents to a private car trip to his Hometown Suchumi( after war in 2008 is no more territory of Georgia...you maybe know the history)
I remember, that was an adventure for us, because nobody into the tourist group should know abaut this private trip.
Thomas, our guide, promise...all is save for us, the " border" from Russia to Abchasia ( that time 1982 Georgia, a part of Russia)
Anyway, we passed without problems to SUCHUMI, his home town.
A very warm and heartwarming welcome in his family house - this is what I remember.
We stayed overnigt...next day back by car to our hotel to SOTCHI, located on black see.
My parents get a few years later an invitation from this family, and visited them once.
We always keep in touch with them until the early 90s.
I don t know, if this wonderfu georian family survived the war in 2008.
They had to escape from there houses and properties😢
Anyway I am planing to travel one more time to Georgia and Armenia.
The landscape and history is amazing.

Hi Gabriel, that was some hike into the mountains. It looks like there are rock sides all around there. I'm guessing you're going into Russia once you cross that bridge. I thought you might try to cross along the stream crossing they could have been watching with binoculars to see if you're attempting to go over. It's an incredibly remote place for a monastery, it almost doesn't make sense. Yet these monasteries are in locations that are seemly in unexplained locations I would guess there must be near a main road to travel easily to a town or city.

    • @GabrielTravelerVideos
      @GabrielTravelerVideos  Год назад +4

I'm pretty sure it was still Georgia on the other side of the locked bridge. The castle on the hill above the river that I wanted to go to was in Georgia. I think the border was down the river through the canyon about a kilometer. But I wonder if that bridge was built during the Soviet era when the border was less important, and then they locked it when Georgia became independent as part of border security. Does anyone know if there was a border checkpoint there during the Soviet era, or was there no real border because it was all the USSR?

Some facts about the country of Georgia, since the beginning of modern history, Georgia was part of The Persian empire (The Safavid empire). After that it was part of The Qajar empire( another Persian empire). Qajar empire lost it to The Russian empire and then after that it was part of The Soviet union until its independence. There's still a huge community of Georgians today living in the north and north east of IRAN as well as in Russia.

Having more miles than time - it seems that Rabat or Marrakesh are just some places that need shelter built real soon. And, it's non-Schengen elapsed time indicated too. I like some Engineers Without Borders efforts for earthquake relief. Dr. George Nez from Colorado got 1000's of these thin shell hyperbolic roofs built for earthquake survivors in several countries. Ten people could even lift these roofs into place on posts or pillars and then the infill, walls, doors and windows could proceed at a more leisurely pace. Keep It Simple Surely applies to this rapid response shelter design. Someday the design and experience may help people you know and love. Or yourself too, of course. Enjoy your days, don't forget. 🌲😎🌲

No, I explained at 13:42 in the video that it was on the other side of the border checkpoint. So I'm not sure if you can visit it, didn't want to ask the border control.

Gabriel.......some feedback from a longtime viewer from southern humboldt.....not many "air miles" from Willits. Ok....i know whoever is reading this acts as a "filter"---- a very necessary function for successful channels. So----recently your conversational style is sometimes slipping into the way a boxing/wrestling/mma...etc. announcer ends their intros with a drop in tone kinda like "and in this corner George Johnson(tone drops an octive)...Johnson (droping
another half octive).....Normal to Low Tone is what Gabe is doing some lately. OK----Filter please let him know---it does get a bit irriating.
