Bill Gates, Sr. calls for more competition in the U.S. public school system. Gates says, "We have very low expectations of our public education system...if we set our expectations higher, we would perform at a higher level."

"To me, global poverty is a humanitarian issue. People are dying, and we can save them - and that ought to be enough." These words from the senior Bill Gates illustrate his commitment to "showing up" for his life and improving the lives of impoverished populations all over the world. - Commonwealth Club of California
William H. Gates, Sr. guides the vision and strategic direction of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and serves as an advocate for the foundations key issues. He first answered his son's request for help in using his resources to improve reproductive and child health in the developing world by directing the William H. Gates Foundation, which was established in 1994. It merged with the Gates Learning Foundation to create the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in 2000.
Gates earned his bachelor's and law degrees from the University of Washington, following three years of U.S. Army service in World War II. A founding partner at Preston Gates & Ellis, Gates has served as president of both the Seattle/King County Bar Association and the Washington State Bar Association. Gates and his late wife, Mary Maxwell Gates, raised three children: Kristianne, Bill, and Libby. Now married to Mimi Gardner Gates, Gates continues his lifelong commitment to many civic programs, cultural organizations, and business initiatives.
I fully support this mans call for competition in early grades. Well said words that everybody should plan school systems around.
You're right... then all the kids in school would be stupid.
I just like this guy so much. I remember when I was young there was a statistic that there would never be enough teachers. Now we need to take it to a higher level. Some people have the ability to teach some don't. It's not a matter of education. It's the ability to inspire. There needs to be a revolution in teaching. Pay needs to be matched to outcomes. Just because you have an advanced degree doesn't mean you're any good at teaching.
Privatize all the government schools. Make them run by non-profit local parental boards. Give full-ride vouchers to the poorest 20% of the kids. Allow charitable scholarships for need and merit to help a bit more.
This would give us competition, local control, parental involvement, specialization among schools, better teaching and reduced cost.
Property taxes could be slashed, which would help the poor whether they rented or owned.
NCLB is unconstitutional. Delete the Fed. Ed. bureaucracy.
teachers aren't motivated to teach well if they aren't paid well
Make everyone compete with one another - what a uniquely American solution. There will be a lot of shattered lives and losers but for the winners it will be profit city. Surprise, surprise, surprise!
teachers aren't motivated to teach if they aren't paid well
this guy does so much hemming and hawing and talking without saying anything...this kind of speaking should sound an alarm in the BS detecting area of your brain.
. Education is a necessary foundation to be a strong independent country and person. He is absolutely correct, and so sad to see and hear how many people close their eyes to this issue. Glad this weathy family made all the monies they did.
since CA. complained bout no $ for their schools how'd they have the $ to build such an expensive school? did gates donate a lot of $ for it?
