Thank you for a good review and comparisons. I finally this spring had a client that needed this camera to get the shots and recognitions he wanted. The G4 Pro and AI Pro just were not enough for the distance and conditions to nab license plates. The LR version has been the ticket and he’s very happy.
great review - ok obviously you are a fan of UI too, but the clarity and the low light picture are amazing. Can you mention about how far away is the camera from the target area of focus? I was hoping to learn what is the real usable distance. thank you!
Wow this camera is impressive. Makes the Ai Pro, which as you mentioned is as phenomenal camera that I have deployed many times, look like a ring camera.
Thanks for yet another excellent review! This camera is definitely beyond both my budget and my needs, but I’ve been very curious about it ever since I first saw it announced 16:30
How is the field of view on the wide 17mm compared to an AI Pro? I have an AI pro that I’m considering replacing with this, but I’m very happy with the current field of view. I just want better facial and license plate recognition out in front of my house. The current AI Pro can’t grab it without a drastic optical zoom that narrows the field of view too much.
Quick correction, the Moon is a full sun lit exposure. Definitely bounces lots of light. At iso 25,000 a full moon reflects very close to the same amount of light as a full sun at 100iso for say landscape photos.
Cheers Clay, its good, low light looks alot better, be interesting to know how good it is at night with just IR and UK reflective plates, as good as it is its still a 2k+ camera due to the lenses so still going to be a smaller audience
@@JimtheITguy I think the real kicker is that the more light you have, the faster it's frame rate. The faster the frame rate the less motion blur.. it's always a trade off.. the less light you have the bigger the struggle.. but this is a order of magnitude faster than the AIPro
The 17 is going to be wide like a typical outdoor camera, the 45 is going to be zoomed in. So if u want to cover a wide area i would go 17, if you want to get more detail at a little further distance or a very specific area (think Gate, door, entrypoint, etc) I would go 45...
@@DPCTechnology Thanks. I wasn't sure so I already went with 45 a couple weeks ago. It'll still be some time before I can try it for reasons. If I hate it, maybe someone with the opposites needs will want to swap!
@@DPCTechnology Exactly. I think going over the use cases of why someone would want X over Y because of those strong differences would help people decide on their purchase. They're both top of the line cameras by them, so seeing the breakdown between them (zoom, night vision, ai features, ect.) back to back would be cool. It's not easy to see the advantages/disadvantages one has over the other.
Any thoughts on how well this (with the long distance lens) would pickup license plates on a driveway/entry point at a 76 foot direct distance from camera to vehicle down at the entry point? So 30 feet up a wall, 70 feet from the wall, leaving approximately a 76 foot camera to license plate location (hypotenuse) if that makes sense. I've been waiting and waiting for someone to review this camera. Thanks!

As an Micro Four Thirds shooter by hobby. Can't wait to see how crazy this camera looks with different lenses on for fun. Obviously they'll likely lack weatherproofing that Olympus' professional lens are know for but can't you have fun from time to time?
I noticed that some of the cars were moving pretty quickly on the main road. Looks like lots of motion, can the dslr pick up those license plates that are zooming by on the main road??
My G4 pros are useless at night if a vehicle is in motion . If I win the lottery I’ll change everyone of them to this version . Well unless other companies offer better options
I seem to recall other Ubiquiti cameras having the fogging issue also. I don't think that is good enough on a camera that is so expensive. I think it was one of their Pro range cameras that also had the fogging issue, again not really good enough on a camera that is so expensive. They should be assembled in a humidty controlled, clean room. I have not had other camera brands, even cheap ones like reolink, have that fogging issue...... They are supposed to be water resistant, so humidty should not get in once they are assembled, so this is definitely a manufacturing issue. Love the camera when it is clear though. Way overkill for anything I would do, but I can definitely see a use case for it, even though the AI DSLR does not have any night vision capability as it has no IR or IR filter, but if you teamed it with a Protect Spotlight in an area that had some artificial lighting, it would pretty decent.
It was the G5 Pro, i did a video on it. This is not Unifi's fault. The lens is from Olympus and it works perfectly, there is just an enclosure that you put over the lens, that is what I had fogging on. It was REALLY humid this summer and rained almost every day. It took a few days and it worked itself out..
@@DPCTechnology Glad it worked itself out. Hopefully it was just the excessive hunidty over summer that caused it for your unit and not something more.
@@DPCTechnology You could try applying those car windshield Anti-Fog treatment inside the enclosure. Idk how long the coating will wear off or if they'll effect optics.
I would love it if they would sell this thing without the lens and let us add our own I know why they won't but would still Love that to be able to put a super telephoto on top of a big office building that cause watch courtyards and such from so far above or other I di have to say I love that thing and wish I could afford it.
That would be cool.. I wish is was a Sony E-Mount because I have a ton of lenses.. but for a security cam i think the 17 and 45 make the most sense and they are selling thim at a reasonable price..
@@DPCTechnology I would like to mention the Sony ILX-LR1 but obviously, its designed for drone applications, not security camera and you can't just buy one off the shelf, you have to contact Sony (idk about other countries).
Comparing the AI Pro camera with a DSLR in these examples is not fair as the DSLR camera has better optical zoom and the AI Pro camera has a very wide angle and the examples shown are at digital zoom
The only thing that makes a DSLR camera more expensive is the ability to add or replace a high quality lens. In my opinion, a Pro camera with the same angle of view would be more comparable to the video captured by a DSLR. Anyway, I agree that a DSLR camera is better ;)
