For this tutorial, all we need is a system with atleast 8 GB RAM, a 64 bit operating system & 20 GB hard disk space.
We will be using Virtualization software Oracle VirtualBox , a pre-configured, Hadoop learning environment Hortonworks HDP sandbox and other softwares like Cygwin, all of which are completely free.

We have already learnt how to setup and configure Apache Hadoop in a Pseudo-distributed mode on a virtual machine.
We have used a virtualization software called VMware Workstation, to create Virtual machine.
In order to utilize the resources of the virtual machine that we created, we had to setup an Operating system on it.
Apache Hadoop has few external software dependencies- like Java, SSH etc.
We have to setup these pre-requisites before setting up Hadoop.
Based on the version of Hadoop we want to setup , we have to setup the compatible software dependencies.
For example, to setup Apache Hadoop 3.X, we need Java 8.
Though this was a lengthy process, it was necessary to help us understand the interplay between Hadoop and its software dependencies.
Essentially, we also learnt about virtualization and the need for it.
We learnt how to create virtual machines using Virtualization softwares.
And virtualization forms the basis for Cloud computing.
But what if, we want a straightforward, pre-configured, learning environment that contains the latest developments from Apache Hadoop.
Hadoop based organizations like Hortonworks & Cloudera, develop and provide us such pre-configured environments.
Hortonworks provides Hortonworks Data Platform i.e. HDP sandbox.
The Sandbox comes packaged in a virtual environment that can run in the cloud or on our personal machine.
The Sandbox allows us to learn and explore HDP on our own.
Similarly, Cloudera provides a Quick start VMs.
In this session, we will walk through the general approach for installing the Hortonworks Sandbox (HDP) onto VirtualBox on our computer.
Before we get started, make sure that one must be able to allocate at least 8 GB (8192 MB) of RAM for the sandbox.
