Modern motherboards are feature rich.
They come with all the features that a normal computer user would need.
Motherboards provide a number of ports and sockets to connect to a variety of peripherals.
There are usually more number of ports and sockets we would normally require.

Lets take RAM slots for example.
When we buy a computer, a typical modern motherboard that comes with it, generally houses 4-8 RAM slots, out of which we probably have RAM cards inserted in 1 or 2 slots.
These additional slots can come handy later when we want to bump up our system’s RAM capacity.
Same is true in case of CPUs.
While, single CPU socket is common in most of the desktop and laptop computers, some motherboards may have more than one CPU socket.
Dual CPU sockets and Quad CPU sockets are pretty common in Workstations and Servers.
While such systems can be run with single CPU also, we can scale up our system by adding additional CPUs when we need more computing power.
Similarly, we might need some additional features that our system’s motherboard doesn’t provide onboard.
Today, most of the computers have some kind of basic graphic cards integrated into the motherboard or CPU, which is often sufficient for many users.
But for specialized users like serious gamers or graphic designers it might not be good enough.
In such cases, a high-quality external video card or graphic card may just be the most important part of the computer system - it's a must for rendering 3D graphics in particular.
A dedicated video card greatly improves the quality of the graphics.
For that reason, motherboards generally come with slots which enable us to add devices to the motherboard thereby extending or expanding the capability of our system.
Hence, these slots are called Expansion slots.
And the cards or devices which go into these expansion slots are called expansion cards.
