I bought a GS500fk4 in 2004 brand new. I rode that bike balls-to-the-wall, I could rev it up to 9k through every gear keeping up with my 600cc friends and have a great time in the process, I rode it up and down the Carolina coast and through the rural hills of Kentucky, I used it for work travel, and tons of pleasure rides. It would consistently get more than 60mpg. I put almost 30,000 miles on it before a top-end engine rebuild, after the rebuild it ran good as new, I regularly changed the oil, one set of new tires, one new chain, and super simple basic maintenance. It was cheap to own total original purchase price of $5,250 eventually I had kids so I sold it but I miss it every nice weather day. It was a great bike had 38k on it when I sold it to someone who didn't have their motorcycle endorsement, that was the saddest ride I ever had on it. It is still running to this day.

hi ken ive got a 2004 f and its my second bike after a 250 and i quite like it. one thing i love is the huge 20 litre tank and not having to fill up so frequently. i went one tooth bigger on the front cog to drop the revs a little 👍

I love 500s and especially this 500 in general because it has more than enough power for someone who has been riding a 250 for a season or 2 and deciding it's time to step it up so you can get out of tight spots EASILY unlike a 250 (as all of you know :D) and it's still fairly forgiving if you mess around.

"Ride it cross country" I in fact did that on one of these. Did great! Only issue I had was fuel starvation while going over 130kph for over an hour. The main vacuum petcock simply needed a breath to catch up.
The suspension could also use some stiffening.

The 500's are a perfect step up from a 250. Like riding but you're not fully committed yet because you know how fast these sport bikes get within the blink of an eye....they have enough power to get into a tight spot while still remaining forgiving.

Wow, nice looking machine! I see how it resembles my rare in the United States, - 2008 Suzuki GSX650F. If I didn't grow up riding and racing 80cc-500cc dirtbikes from age 11 until I sold my last KX500 dirtbike in 2015, I would have started off with a 400-500cc motorcycle as my first bike, instead of my current 531 pound -(wet), GSX650F as my first motorcycle. It's quick, but it's no 9-10 second sportbike obviously. It does 0-60 in 3.7 and runs the 1/4 mile in 11.94 @ 110.1 and has a governed top speed of 135 mph.
I've ridden over 5,000 miles on my GSX650F already, and I've had no problems or issues. Despite what some may think... Growing up riding dirtbikes absolutely helps you transition and ride your first motorcycle better in every way. My brother with about the same dirtbike experience as I, said screw it, and bought a modified 2014 Yamaha FZ-09 as his first motorcycle. Stock, his bike does 0-60 in under 3 seconds, and it runs the 1/4 mile in 10.66 @ 124+... Again, before the mods it currently has. Anyway, he's had this FZ for over a year, and he put over 10k trouble & accident free miles on it! Neither of us have dropped our bikes, (knock on wood). We go to the mountains and rip around with our group of sportbikers almost every weekend. Not bad for our first ever motorcycles! We're not overconfident either... We know our luck can change in a flash. We take our riding very seriously. We respect our machines. Anyway, so sorry for the super long comment. I will subscribe after this comment. Keep up the good work guys!

in my opinion it's up to you if you are responsible, and don't panic when operating machines. put yourself in a large parking lot with no posts if possible and practice stop and go and u-turns, then get up to speed and practice braking harder and faster. Get to know the machine and how it operates, kinda like driving an unfamiliar car, everything is slightly different in the way it feels.

I've got one of these, its a sad piece of shit. I bought it in a hurry as my main commuter was off getting serviced and I couldn't bring myself to use a car to go to work. That was just to much to contemplate. So yes much much better than a car, but still a sad sack of an excuse for a motorcycle. Gutless, poor brakes, soggy suspension, reliable as all hell, poorly finished with fading of the paint and decals. The best of spanish motorcycle construction. Still better than using the car!
