So this is it, the final ecchi anime review on the channel since youtube doesn't like these for advertising. But after some of you people voted I watch Redo of Healer and Inukai-san's dog in the past, I'd say that that is not necessarily a bad thing. Podcast link: 👉www.youtube.com/@Genericanimepodcast
the manga is fantastic. immediately binged as soon as i found out about the show. wishing the mangaka quick recovery and good health so we can have more!
Fun fact: the manga has it different than the anime, it’s more fighting less ecchi, there are literal whole 18+ scenes anime-only that the manga either had only one page about or it didn’t even exit in the manga.
Yeah, I find the descent into darkness to be a rather believable one. Clearly well considered and thought out, unlike the half-baked motivations you find in most "modern" Western productions.
Utena literally just reminds of Homura Akemi, a magical girl from Madoka Magica, she's basically literally just Homura, similar color pallete, similar same black hair, similar arc into madness, mc, but, horny ecchi and also Utena "cares" about every magical girl, Homura only cares about one magical girl, or, THE girl, HER girl.
The problem with this being 1 cour is that Kiwi's love hotel thing will be season 2 content (as it should because it's an important story part). She also gets some nice development later on in the manga. Basically everyone does.
there is only one dude in this anime and it is a dinosaur, it is my favorite anime and once it ended last week, i then realized i had nothing else to live for
9/10 personally. This Manga hits hard. There's way more of a story after where the anime ends. It's a hard core exploration of magical girls as a concept.. . . . . . . . . . Utena becomes the very reason for the existence of magical girls. She's so in love with them that her entire drive is making them grow as people and become stronger. She decides to embrace her sadistic desires as a means to make her beloved magical girls the best they can be. And it's actually glorious to witness. She is forced to battle against her own darkness as well. She even loses control herself at one point and completely corrupts one of the magical girls personality in their powered up state. This permeates the rest of the story because one of the magical girls becomes a sadist herself in her second transformation because of the infusion of Utena's darkness into her during the time that Utena lost control of her power and becomes pure evil. There's even an entire redemption arc for Lord Enorma who Utena defeated in this first season. The Manga is actually peak.
@@Keith-san3022 . .spoilers . . . . .. . She wasn't killed, just slammed through the floor and fell down into the sub basement. She then escaped after grabbing a couple of broken magical girl transformation devices that were down in the basement
No. Madoka Magica is THE hard core exploration of magical girls as a concept, THE original, and always will be, even if Madoka Magica is hard core and extreme, it is STILL true and faithful to and completely respects magical girls. This..? This is JUST a completely godawful soulless post Madoka rip off and trying to copy and rip off of Madoka Magica's glory/legacy and failing like the other countless soulless Madoka rip offs and a incel creep p3d0 excuse to s3xualize actual literal CHILDREN and write off and subject r@pe and SA as nothing but a joke for "comedy" and nothing else. THIS is completely 100% against and a disgrace to the concept and everything of magical girls/mahou shoujo and shoujo in general. THIS and YOU do NOT know magical girls or even magical girls as a concept. This is NOT even a magical girl anime.
in my opinion this is anime of the year frieren is anime of the year 2023 so shut up. And I'll say it for me, this series is hilarious, I'm one of those who have also read everything from the manga so far and I can't wait for season two
What's good about the whole story including the Manga is it definitely has more time for character development Especially for Kiwi, Utena, Vena and the highlight of it all being Magenta (I cannot state this hard enough) the Third Grand Moment of the series.
Mahoako is actually the perfect modern magical girl show. It's animation is fantastic and the story is actually a lot deeper than you would get with a casual glance. I mean yeah if you turn off your brain and watch you will miss a lot of the details and themes. There's a lot of subtle cues and hints towards things that aren't blatantly shoved in your face. Of course I read ahead in the manga, which the anime only really hits the first 25 chapters of.
The pacing feeling unbalanced is for a good reason. They chop and change the order of quite a lot of chapters, meaning some clear cases of cause and effect are lost. For example, The Tres Magia losing the fight at the photoshoot, The Tres Magia losing to Alice, and Azur breaking, happen one after the other. The very next scene afterwards is the Tres Magia training. This order of events tells us they're all training because they all needed to get stronger to keep up with Enormita, noy just Azur. Another example is in the the manga, Utena fixes Alice's doll immediately after breaking Azur's mind, to draw the thematic parallel that she wants to fix a toy *because* she just broke a toy
Ngl, once the anime was around 4-5 episodes in, I decided I needed more, so I went and binged the manga, and man it just gets so much better in the later chapters past where the anime ends, so I'm REALLY hoping we get a season 2. The saddest part though is that not long after I caught up, the mangaka announced an indefinite hiatus, which still hasn't ended... It's been months... Also this shit keeps happening, I got caught up with Nagatoro as well, and like a month later or something it was announced that that would end soon (in fact as of writing we're waiting for the last chapter, it's been 17 days since the last one, it could drop literally any minute now).
Nice video! I watched it to the like 3rd episode and then stopped so its pretty interesting to see what happened to it. (I discovered it on chinese tiktok) I would say that it is atleast one of the best reviews I've seen.
Actively avoiding ecchi aspect while discussing ecchi anime. Does this even make sense? If you cannot enjoy ecchi, why even watch it. I've never enjoy any piece of entertainment that has elements that I don't like (I don't even give them the benefit of doubt).
I'm avoiding the ecchi in the video since RUclips really doesn't like it. Not about to spend 20-30 hours making a video only for RUclips to decide that it's not suitable
@@addedcheese But that would make the video pointless, doesn't it? Besides, how do you know RUclips doesn't like it. I've seen more explicit video on RUclips with more views than this one. I've also seen more clips from this anime with more views than yours. There are even those who would discuss sensitive socio-political issues that would risk deplatforming. Yet you fear the "RUclips overlords". Without basis, is your fear different from superstition?
@@khai96x I know since this isn't my first ecchi video, but it is the first that doesn't have limitations for publicity set by RUclips. You can make very explicit videos if you A) have tens of thousands of subs that will still find it and B) you don't care about it being monetizable. For reference even for this I had to fight to get it monetized.
I feel like this anime is not really about a battle of evil and good, but it is an anime about self discovery. Sayo and Utena both did not realize prior to the event animated that they were a sadist (utena) and masochist (sayo) And I’m sure that everyone else begins to get character development later in this series. I did not know that this anime was ecchi before I started watching it so when it got into that, I was surprised, but the whole whole situation first had me laughing so hard that I had to keep watching 😂
Wasn't expecting to come across a fellow Gushing fan - from Finland no less - today, but hey, I'll take it! This was my favourite anime of the last season, I already ordered the JP Blu-Rays, OST, and the OP single (latter two already arrived) in the hopes of trying to manifest a second season somehow. Would help to have a physical release of the manga in English (Finnish would be great but I wouldn't expect that to ever happen), I don't really like to read digitally.
I think there is a more complex story underpinning this anime that never gets explicitly shown. I think that the demon mascots on both the sides of the magical girls and the dark magical girls are secretly working together to monetize magical girls with merchandise to make a ton of money. However, this brand wouldn't mean anything unless they had some sort of villain to fight against. The first villain picked was Lord, but she turned out to be way too dangerous, and wound up killing too many magical girls to be allowed to stay in power. Therefore, they came up with a plan to replace Lord with the protagonist, who they knew would cause problems for the magical girls, but never outright kill them. I think this whole show is that scheme coming to fruition.
sometimes I think any sexual element in an anime makes people completely turn off their brains and become incapable of undertanding and enjoying a show
Yeah, there is a guy I play against in a tabletop boardgame group who is convinced that anime is a tool for predators. I can't get him to see past the fact that a tool or vehicle for deviancy does not mean that in and of itself the object is bad.
thats exactly what i plan to do next time i hear somebody say anime is for kids just show them gushing over magical girls they will change their tune if they want to or not
Depends what you define as "kids". Most of the pearl clutching over this manga/anime has been due to its characters being kids. Ironically, I wouldn't actually see any issue with a 14-year-old watching this. So if you're going to call them "kids", then sure, it's perfectly fine for kids.

For a 'questionable' show, it is surprisingly character driven.

I enjoyed the anime less for the echii more for the fall into madness that we see in utena
Personally even if they cut out most of the echii I would still love the show. The characters are great and honestly it's pretty good im general
Gotta love the little lesbian disaster
Definitely a fall to the dark path. But, it was funny to watch!
