I stumbled onto your channel wanting to listen to Rock of Ages. Before long, as I’ve gone about my daily, household chores this morning I’ve listened to 13 of your presentations. 😊 I’m recently retired from ministry to take care of my ailing wife. The old hymns have brought about an incalculable amount of comfort to her as she, with her prodigious memory, has spent hours finding solace in their lyrics. I appreciated you pointing out how not all hymns today are without substance in your coverage of “In Christ Alone.” And certainly not all hymns written as far back as the church began were of substance. But those that rose to the top have been for generations retained in hymnals. Today, in most congregations it seems, the hymnals are collecting dust in favor for praise songs birthed in an egocentric society. So thank you for giving the nod to these precious old hymns that have, up until now, survived the passage of time.
I was taking a walk one day and this song was in my mind and all of a sudden the revelation that he took my SORROWS as well as my sin was made so real to me that something was lifted from me.
It was a cold windy day on April 9, 1971 at a Community Good Friday Service that I first heard this hymn. On that day I was accompanying a Christian college student choir to a church where the choir was to perform in Buffalo, NY, at noon. I was standing outside the bus door after the choir had disembarked and was going into the church. A middle aged man in a heavy overcoat and shoes on the wrong feet came up to me to talk. I had finished my college studies the previous year and was spending 18 months in Buffalo as a missionary at another church. This choir was from my alma mater. As we talked, a man came down the church steps and approached me and the man. He introduced himself by name as the chairman of deacons, and said, "sir, we'er getting ready to have a service, could you move along?" Hesitantly the man walked away. I could hardly believe what I just heard. But, time for the service came and we did the usual. People from various other churches had gathered, prayed, sung songs, read scripture, and ministers performed their public duties. I kept thinking of the man who was asked to move away and not bother us. Then we sang "I Stand Amazed in the Presence of Jesus the Nazarene." Chills popped up on my arms as I sang with the congregation. My mind was on the man who wanted someone to talk to (and seek money from). My mind asked, "How can a man sing 'I stand amazed' after telling someone to leave?" This seemed so hypocritical to my young mind. I can never sing this hymn without the image of that man in my mind and and the hypocrisy of many Christians. A young lady in that choir took a picture of me and that man as we talked. It is a constant reminder of that day when a ministry opportunity was missed. We can get so caught up in busy activities that we forget why we celebrate the birth, death, and resurrection of Jesus. As to that young lady who snapped the picture, 52 years ago she became my bride and joined me on our journey in ministry.
I stand Amazed in The Presence. This song is very special to my heart. My husband and I separated and got back together after 7 years and remarried. I could not sing this song in our church without tears flowing down my cheeks.
Beautiful ❤! It is truly amazing to stand in the presence of Jesus the Nazarene and to know: All things work together for good to those who love God and are called according to his purposes!
I love this song so much. It's all about the wonderful story of how we poor wretched sinners were redeemed by our wonderful Lord. Makes me cry every time, just think the wonder of it all.
❤ This beautiful song led me to our Lord, Jesus Christ. Thanks to this great man, Charles Gabriel. He touched my life for Christ. The love Christ has for us is surely marvellous and wonderful.
I love this song! What an incredible lyric and promise. The last verse is simply incredible: “When with the ransomed in glory, His face I at last shall see, t’will be my joy through the ages, to sing of His love for me And so I sing, How marvelous, How wonderful and my song shall ever be, How marvelous, how wonderful, is my Savior’s love for me!” Can you imagine being among that great crowd of witnesses in eternity and singing of the love of Christ for us? I recall as a youngster thinking of heaven and being in church forever and wondering, who would ever want to do that? Now I look above and long for that day when my faith will become sight and I can think of nothing that I would rather do for eternity than to praise God the Father, and His Son, my Savior, Jesus Christ. How the transformation from my youth to now? Nothing other than the Grace of God. He reached out and changed my heart. And so, “I sing, How marvelous, How wonderful and my song shall ever be, How marvelous, how wonderful, is my Savior’s love for me!” Thanks be to God, because it is only by His incredible love for me that I would ever want to be saved.
The most amazing thing with all these hymns is that I sang them as a child not having heard or maybe understood the gospel and what Christ had done for me...and now stand amazed at the truth in these words of old hymns. The words may have spoken to me. God working in my life all those years
My team at Focus on the Family really loves watching these videos for our Friday team devos. Thank you for providing these, they are such a blessing for our team. This is a great way to start off our Friday work day.
This song means a lot to me. I remember singing this song at home, it just seemed to pop into my head, I found myself singing it several times a day. At that time I had t been to Church for sometime. God convicted me to go to Church and I went along, then one particular week, this guy stood up and said, “ I’m going to break bread but just before I do, I want us to sing a hymn that is not normally chosen”. The Hymn he chose was I Stand Alone. 🙏 for me it was confirmation that I was at the right Church. So Thank you Jesus 🙏🙏
Thank you for telling us the history of this song. Beautiful words and lovely music. I love the verse of the angels attending Jesus in the zgarden of Gethsemane. ❤
I weep when I think about how much Christ suffered to save each one of us. I’m in awe of His love for us! I plead the holy blood of Jesus Christ over every person He loves. Praise the Lord that we are cleansed of all our sins through the blood of Jesus Christ. He has ransomed us with His blood.
❤ I love to read sbout song facts and meanings, even some secular ones but nothing compares to some of the old hyms. God bless you and thank you for this video.
It is a natural go to song when sitting contemplating the majesty & wonder of the Godhead & one just naturally breaks into this song because it is AMAZING!! A song from my far away childhood & youthful years, always sung with gusto in the evening services.
WHO CAN COMPARE WITH SUCH GREAT A LOVE FOR MANKIND. THERE IS NO ONE. JESUS DID IT ALL. THANK YOU MY LORD AND SAVIOUR. THANK U LUKE. STAY AWESOMELY BLESSED.
The first and only time I've heard this is during a Gaither "tent revival" in honor of another preacher, Billy Graham. Your song tonight adds another layer of awe, it's like hearing it for the first time. Thank you.
Love this song, ❤used to sing it at my church many years ago as a member of the Mariakani Christian Centre choir in Nairobi .Thank you for the memories. .. hymns were translated into my local luhya dialect and they are beautiful, hope to record them soon.
Luke, I love those great old hymns with their fantastic texts. You do a great job of "modernizing" them -- I Stand Amazed is so beautiful! The text brings me to tears even though I've known this hymn since my childhood. Keep up the great work Luke.
Its a remarkable hymn and a personal favourite of mine as well. What gets me is nobody mentions how brave Jesus was willingly going to that death the crucial moments in gethsemane "not my will but thine" incredible courage given he knew what was coming When I was younger i never understood why people would Jesus victory was sealed at gethsemane as an adult however its clear Jesus stayed where he was locked in prayer and crucially held his nerve until they came for him.
Amen! I love this song. I must have first heard it on radio; we did not sing it at Church as it was not in our hymnbooks. I, although, not a singer, shared the story of the songwriter and sang the song with our small congregation probably a couple years ago now.. Several said they were blessed and that they had never heard the song before. My favorite verse is #2 because of the line: He had no tears for His own griefs but shed drops of blood for mine. Stanza 3 is new to me. I love this hymn. Both the lyrics and tune are inspiring, uplifting and joy inducing.
As you mentioned that he wrote for Billy Sunday evangelical ministry, well, Billy Graham attended Billy Sunday's evangelical meetings. And , i believe he said he accepted Jesus at one of Billy Sunday's meetings. God bless. - Debbie
Thank you for doing the research behind the amazing worship songs and sharing it with everyone. I pray millions upon millions will see your videos. What a blessing that you are sharing the gifts the LORD God Almighty has blessed you with.
It is so sad we have religion instead of Christ here in America and around the world! We follow traditions of men and a lot of things the Bible doesn't teach, such as denominations -sounds like these pharasees, and other religious leaders. We MUST get back to the Word!!

The hymn is "I Stand Amazed" NOT "I Stand Alone."
I have really thoroughly enjoyed your program!
I have heard most of these hymns when I was a little girl in church with my family.
Rewatching this again tonight 3/06/
Thank you for telling us the history of this song. Beautiful words and lovely music. I love the verse of the angels attending Jesus in the zgarden of Gethsemane. ❤
Great to hear this. I have put it down to be played at my funeral. The Lord has given me hope in this world since giving my life to him.
