    I love the tactile sensation of writing. But I LOATHE paper clutter (I’m 73, I’ve had my share of clutter over the years). My solution is to,write - not type - on my iPad. I write sermon notes. I write notes when I’m listening to an informative RUclips or podcast. I write in the digital planner I made. I’m creating a wide-margin digital Bible that I can write in (not just an e-Bible). So there is a solution for people like me who love to write but - paper 🥴🥴🥴. Thanks for sharing how you combine the two.

    I personally use Notion for tracking habits and goals so that I can see a measurable metric of how I’m doing really. I don’t really like filling out habit trackers in my planner all that much, and seeing a number of how much or how little I’m doing a habit or working towards a goal helps me to plan my week out better. This was such a helpful video though! I’ve been thinking through how to make my planning system less redundant, and this has made me feel good about how I use my digital tools :)

      Thank you I’m so glad you liked the vid! I know a lot of people who use notion. For me it’s a very specific type of notebook where only my longest form studies go lol. It’s great to know that you are using notion for something that DOESNT work in your paper planner though, I think that’s the perfect place digital tools can help out

    My system is very simlar, using Google calendar (love it, synced across my desktop and phone) and Google Keep - although I have Apple envy for that wonderful list app that sorts automatically. Nice! I wear a lot of different hats, so colour block my calendar throughout the day and week, which helps me stay on track. In the Keep app, I have a note for Weekly Tasks, using checkboxes (for the satisfaction of checking off items). This includes the specific tasks I have to do from the different roles, as well as life stuff. Too much to put in a planner, which is reserved for priorities in category form - such as write article, schedule social media, prep speech, buy present for X, meetings, etc. It's been a work in progress, but I think I'm getting closer to something that works for me. Still in 3 different planners and it seems to be settling into something workable.

    I use the YNAB program for my budget and bills. I’ve tried it on paper and it’s too cumbersome. I just downloaded Notion recently but haven’t really set it up too much. I’m going to try the app you recommended. I think it’s a great idea to kind of have a master dumping area for things that need to get done and then pulling that into your weeklies. It’s easier to organize digitally too.

    I started using a rolling weekly task list (which I got from Claudia Gray's channel) in my bullet journal, which has helped me immensely with both regular tasks that come up and things with a vague timeline. I've also started using Notion to store some long term information for myself, but I like the look of this app for more task organization.

    The only paper planner I use is a month at a glance by rifle paper co. I don't have enough on a single day or week to warrant more layouts. I replicate on my digital calendar to add a phone reminder and look at when out and about. For anything else I just use a notebook or sometimes Notion if it relates to my "personal" work pursuits.

    You have an interesting system. Maybe a bit too complex for me, but I'm self-employed and don't have quite so many moving parts to my workscape. I'm mainly a paper planner and can't give up my fountain pens. I have a bullet journel to do my personal tracking, a braindump section, monthly calendar list to note where I've been (not to plan), and then a weekly section where I keep my daily todo list. I find that if the to dos are not on paper, I forget them.
    Three years ago, I switched from using a paper calendar to google calendar. Basically because I needed to click on Zoom links for speaking engagements so often it became cumbersome to store them elsewhere. Eventually, I moved all my dated planning there. Last year, I started with Google Keep for notes I need to take with me from digital sources, but I still keep a paper notebook and pen in my purse for on the go. I would say that I'm still around 75% on paper, but I prefer it that way. This is not to knock anyone who goes the other direction. We all need to do what works for us.
    Anyway, thanks for the informative video. I like to see new ideas in planning.

    I have ADHD and I use Sunsama as my task manager. It keeps me on task and helps me prioritize, in addition to measuring time. I use Google Calendar, which syncs into Sunsama and my Apple calendar (and work Outlook also syncs into the Apple calendar). I have a similar system to yours. I plan weekly using my Hobonichi weeks. I have a personal one and a work+creative one. I only put events in my work one, but they include personal events. For notes I use Obsidian because it just works with my ADHD brain. Anything that comes to mind or anything that I am doing and need to take notes on, it all goes into Obsidian. For example, if I call my phone company to fix something or to change something, I will write that in Obsidian and tag the relevant things like #phonecompany and #billing. That way I can search for it and refer back to it if necessary. While Sunsama keeps me on task, my physical planner really keeps me focused on the priorities. I put the main priorities and tasks for the week there, and that helps me not get distracted by minor tasks that could be done but are not a priority.

    • @RachelleinTheory
      @RachelleinTheory  Год назад +2

      @@RachelleinTheory It's great. It basically walks me through the planning process on a daily and weekly basis. Also, I make it so that my tasks become an event on my Google calendar, so I can just glance at my calendar and see how previous days went, or what's coming up for the day. I only put them as events the day of. I can't do time block planning beyond one day, I've tried many times.
      It also asks for the "planned" time and the "actual" time for tasks. This has made me become much better at estimating how long it takes to do something (ADHD time blindness was pretty bad).
      It's the Hobonchi weeks that keeps me focused on priorities. I only work on what is written there. I make sure I put in some creative/hobby activities so I'm not only focused on work stuff.

Maybe it could help others

    Idk if I'd ever be able to use a paper based planning system for a majority of my planning as I like to gather a lot of data and see graphs of what I'm doing, how often I'm doing them, and everything lol Which is why I plan out stuff mostly in Google sheets. That's definitely the "brain" of my planning system, and extra stuff includes ticktick for my dates or any timers I need to use throughout the day, todoist for my todo list, and docs for my journaling.

    Curiously, I use an analogue system for all the things that you use a digital tool for, with perhaps one exception. By coincidence, I have never used a digital tool outside my work, and because there is very little overlap between my personal life and work, this has never caused me much of a challenge. Your approach is very interesting to contrast with Ryan Carroll's Bullet Journaling System and Practice, where he is using a digital calendar.
    At work, Outlook has been the only tool for nearly 3 decades. In my personal life, I have been tempted many times ever since I played with Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) in the 1990s, but I have never found digital calendars and note-taking programs particular useful.
    I tend to make habits out of recurring events or tasks, and they almost never go into any kind of calendar, e.g. this could be washing clothes every Sunday, backing up computers every Wednesday, and so forth. A few, rare things need a reminder, like cleaning the balcony every half year, and polishing the dinner chairs every quarter. A handful of things need tracking, but that is basically it. I try very hard to simplify things.
    My analogue system is the source of truth: Everything goes into my notebook first through rapid logging. Exceptions are truly exceptional, and generally things get migrated from my notebook and elsewhere if necessary.
    So far my wife and I have shared things ad hoc to each other's calendars, but I think this succeeds to a large degree, because we live in a country, Denmark, where many things have been digitized, and therefore does not need syncing due to accessing the information through the same public digital online systems.

    I think the idea of having double information is a bit much. I already have my information in one, I don’t need it in the other. However there are things online that I can’t track on a planner. I’m doing my work schedules and appointments, along with daily journaling in my planner while I keep track of my sleep, health and work tasks on the computer.
    Having everything on both is cool for if you happen to not have the one with everything on it, but it sounds very time consuming aswell

    I struggle with this SOOOOOOOOOOOO much.... I think it would be more helpful to me if I had an apple computer so that my phone and computer would sync. I did a deep dive on the GTD method but it really felt too overwhelming to my brain. I felt it was too much because I wanted to be able to access the info from my phone but I'm SICK of holding my phone all day. I jumped on board using Todoist.... and again, just fell off because I didn't want to pay for a to-do system but needed the pro or premier or the pay-option to have the features for the volume. Was nice that it was phone/desktop synced but again --paying for that wasn't something I wanted to be locked into. I need something that was a good interface with my computer. BUT I have found that it's super easy to snooze and then forget any notifications on my phone literally because I'm sick of digital "noise". The habit tracker type of stuff -- absolutely can understand that it's so much better on paper. Maybe... Google Keep or Google Todo's with hashtags to search. I'll get there but it's super frustrating in the interim. Thanks for all your ideas... very valuable.

    Saying that you plan weekly made something click for me. I have done my digital notes daily, which makes sense to me (fresh day, fresh start) but I've always felt a little disjointed and it can be hard to find which day had the notes for a specific topic. I'm wondering if I default it to a central weekly note if I'd feel a little more sense of continuity...

    • @RachelleinTheory
      @RachelleinTheory  Год назад +1

      Personally it really helps me. A great productivity tip I heard once was to figure out how your brain processes and manages time, and work with that. Do you think of your routines, tasks, event planning and live on a weekly basis, generally? a daily basis? a monthly basis? Of course there's room for thinking about all of it, but generally as you move through your life, where do your natural cycles start and stop? For me, that's about a week, so I know I need to have a weekly overview of some kind. And I could honestly live without a daily or a monthly.

      I mention it's from Sunshine Sticker Co. in the vid. It was made for a 5mm dot grid planner and the markings represent various ways you could divide up a page if you were making your own bullet journal layouts or something. The markings don't really work well for a notebook that isn't 5mm and her specific size, but it's the perfect size for the hobo weeks so I use it :)

    I use both. Appointments go in my calendar app, so I can ask Siri if I am free or busy at that time. Along with family events, that is if my freaking sister in law would get over herself and send me invites like she does the rest of the family. Oh sorry for the rant, she does not accept that I am autistic and refuses to message, email me, snail mail me, or call me. I just missed a 50th birthday because of her pettiness. I just downloaded things 3 but do not have time to look at it. I usually input a task and forget about it forever. Especially if I put a demand on it that it has to be done by such and such day. This is called demand avoidance that many autists suffer from.
    As for tarot cards, I am looking for a deck, but none call to me. I have Medicine Cards, 2nd ed. I bought the set that includes the book. I just wanted to replace the cards I lost since moving too much in my 20s. I just pull a card a day to see which spirit animal is affecting me that day. As a Native American I highly recommend these cards. The book explains each card in a Native American-Indigenous meaning. Includes also my native cousins south of the border.
