I remember drooling over the articles on magazines saying this was the most thoroughly animated 2D platformer ever made (back then). 25 frames of animation for every action.
A playthrough without commentary that includes cinematics, is in English, and is done by someone rather skilled with the game. Finally! Looking all over and found this video. It's hard for many people to track down copies of the game so I'm going to show them this video if they want to know about it but can't play it for themselves. Nice.
you are right, its very fluid and expressive. Infact if they upped the polygon count and texture res, it might be a decent game for say the ps4 on psn.
Another World and Heart of Darkness... two titles that I can't say that I played much of or even owned (I was either too old for these kind of visual adventures or I was busy with school work/education) !? 🤔😳😢😒
Loved the unique mixture of charmed colorful characters in a dark, creepy world full of deathtraps and man-eating creatures. Underated gem. It deserves a sequel.
I got this in my frosty cereal demo as a kid....I was 5...I had almost completely forgotten what it looks like, only the part where he runs for his life and is saved by the light is as far as I got...Thank you for letting me end this chapter of my childhood.
This... game holds up surprisingly well! Visually, and even voice acting ain't too obnoxious. And when watching like this gives a nostalgic feeling of a good old feature-length cartoon.
I remember this game when I was freaking 7 years old I'm 20 now, I still have nightmares of this game (no joking) I still play it, time to time, gives me tons of nostalgia, PROBABLLY ONE OF THE BEST GAMES EVER
I watched my cousin plays the game once and I was really scared with the deaths. However, Resident Evil wasn't so frightening to me, maybe because the characters were adults.

It takes me over thousands of death and months to complete the game when I was a kid, thanks for uploading the ending part for bringing back the horror and wonderful gameplay of the past.
Dude! This game was hardcore... i remember the first levels till this day. Oh my goodness like for how old it is it actually looks amazing even today, there is something about this game that it feels like its for kids but its actually hard as damn, im sure people who played know what im talking about. It definitely doesnt hold your hand like most games nowadays with examples of " Go here do this, no brainer style "
For a game that's famous for the death scenes, the story is way more wholesome & heartwarming than I expected! It has a really endearing tone. And man those environments are awesome.
+Bruno Campestrini Absolutely agreed. Abe's Oddysee was remade and that game is as old as this one, so im sure many others would love to see same happening with this one - it is very similar with the gameplay and puzzle styles.
They are seemingly similar because of the perspective and 3D backgrounds, and the cutscenes would have you believe everything is 3d, But the sprites are all 2d hand drawn animation and there's not a lot of people with the skills to do the animation in here justice (I say this as someone who does this for a living and has long admired both this and OW:AO). We are far more likely to get a shitty remake like the Earthwormjim ones, than something like the excellent Wonderboy remake. A proper remake of this would take the perfect team to make it, not just any team cobbled together.
It really deserves ! How funny, i thought i was the only one but it seems you also believe this game is kinda like oddworld. It's really a good game and had a lot potential even for a sequel, sadly it went to waste
That, and HoD constantly shifts tone between childish and dark. :/ I would've _loved_ to see an adaptation of _The Black Cauldron_ with this art and gameplay styles though! :)
Yeah that's what interests me the most about this game...People from game dev. industry know how much effort it took them to make it all work.. Not mentioning that the game was released in 1998 , so it must have been even harder to create all the animations ..
I have never seen this game until now, it really stands the test of time well. Excellent soundtrack, clean storytelling, bonus points for using Jurassic Park sound effects. I can see why this would be scary for children under 10 as well. Thank you for sharing.
You can see why it got awards for its graphics, it was a superbly done thing. Would love a rerelease for modern consoles, I never did finish it, think I got up to the finale but then got stuck :(
Classic 90s Game....Love how he already had the complete Gear and Ship just waiting to rescue his dog hahaha...would be amazing to play this game on a HD remake...
What I liked about this long play is that it's not necessarily a speed run. But because of the person who is playing this, knew what to do and completed the game rather quickly.
That Andy kid sure had much free time to build that kind of tree house, not to mention a machine to travel between dimensions. And DAMN do those vile shadow creatures look nasty! The game graphics are also kinda unique.
I love how this game just threw you right into the action; no tutorial, no how to do's - just get in there and learn for yourself. Why it such a long game if that makes sense - took a while to figure everything out!
This game fucked me up as a kid, oh my god. It begins all cute and innocent before he loses his dog and slowly you realize how scary and gruesome the animations are, how terrifying it would be to really be lost in a world like that. The environments and sound are better than a lot of games released in 2019. Nostalgia glasses on or off, this was a classic.
Man this brings back memories. The production values, level, gameplay and character design all hold up really well, this should get the Crash and Spyro treatment and get a remake, its definitely worthy of it. Lol, just noticed that they used the raptor and t rex sound effects from JP for those big monsters in the canyon, don't know if I realized that when I played it as a kid. PLEASE SOMEONE REMAKE THIS!
This will always be one of my favorite games. The first game I bought with my first paycheck. One of the most beautiful games out there a long with Yoshi's Island, and it wasn't until Rayman Origins imo that a platformer looked more animated imo. I still have the disc, but no PS console anymore. I wish it would come to PSN for Vita.
This looks like it has a amazing storyline. I can definitely see this as a motion animation movie!! interesting plot and the gameplay is user friendly and epic like. It looks like you are part of the movie the whole time.
This one my dad bought for me too, it's really a work of art, especially because it doesn't like, have a life bar or any other UI element to it but that shi definitely gave me some mental/emotional whiplash lmao
This game's designers were very skilled in 3D animation, it was at impressive level at the time of development. I believe they were hired to work on Toy Story, which is why the game was delayed. These CG animations were actually a major part of the game's appeal. At the time it would have been incomparably expensive and nearly impossible to visualize the exact same images as a live action movie. I believe making it justice is only possible now. Spielberg should make this into a 3D movie!
Wow! Thanks a lot! That was one of my favourites on PSX and I've completed it million times (I had the French version unfortunately and so missed the speech meaning :) ) ! Pure masterpiece!

Game Grumps need to do a video where its just them watching this lp as Arin slowly gets more infuriated and Danny is just there laughing his head off at Arin and being amazed at how good this lp is
Jugué a una versión demo en el pc con 6 años y como me daba mucho miedo, lo deje a medias xD y ahora me apetecía recordar y me lo estoy pasando entero. Muy bueno
I always saw this game back as a kid as an ad in the Mickey Mouse magazine. I got really hyped about it. Unfortunately, I didn't buy it and it's hard to track it down nowadays for an acceptable price
For those wondering: The game was developed by Amazing Studio who only developed one game; this one. The company consisted of some of the former Delphine employees, known for excellent games like Flashback and Another World. They used rotoscoping, a technique to create lifelike animations with exquisite attention to detail - first pioneered by Prince of Persia back in 1989.
I remember playing this when I was 5 (im 17 now) it's bought back so many memories and where I thought I had got far on this game when I was little I realise now I didn't actually get that fair into the game haha
Miagi Fodder I agree half way with that lol..............I did play Mortal Kombat when I was toddler in 1990s....I'm a peaceful dude too lol............But this actually would of scared (death scenes) me........as it has me slightly disturbed even now, and I play alot of horror/gory game xD I guess it's probably personal preference
ye i grew up with amiga and with flashback,s death scenes it just made it more intense making you not want to die, Even prince or persia getting ripped by the metal shutters chopping you in half made me think dayme me likey
It's amazing how cinematic this game's presentation is without sacrificing ANY of the gameplay as a result (I'm lookin' at Final Fantasy XIII as just one recent casualty of the current rendition of "cinematic videogames" fad). Cut scenes aside, the only truly "cinematic" qualities to this game are the animations and in particular the framerate. But that's all that was really needed to convey that kinda atmosphere. I've been trying to find a copy for myself.
Get an emulator and download the game.
This animation stands up shockingly well even by today's standards!
you are right, its very fluid and expressive. Infact if they upped the polygon count and texture res, it might be a decent game for say the ps4 on psn.
...polygon count?? what lol
@@monkeykid66 3d-esque games tend to use polygons instead of squares for their pixels
No. Just... no. :/
Maybe it's the voice acting, or the way the Amigos look, but it crosses into uncanny valley land.
It's 2023 now and the animation is way above today's standards.
Wow the nostalgia is strong with this one! I had completely forgot about it, I'm so glad I found this I played this one a lot when I was a kid.
+Pip Stanton It plays on Win 7 64! Decided to give it a spin after all these years and wow... it's also tough as nails on Hard.
Snap 💯
Another World and Heart of Darkness... two titles that I can't say that I played much of or even owned (I was either too old for these kind of visual adventures or I was busy with school work/education) !? 🤔😳😢😒
can't believe i found this game again, used to play this with my dad when i was a kid. it was tough as hell, but we finished it
The game has a great storyline and the graphics and gameplay is unique and I've yet to see a more captivating game like this. Phenomenal
Loved the unique mixture of charmed colorful characters in a dark, creepy world full of deathtraps and man-eating creatures.
Underated gem. It deserves a sequel.

And when watching like this gives a nostalgic feeling of a good old feature-length cartoon.
The death scenes made me never ever touch this game again as a kid
+Itama same for me..some were a lill bit TOO EXTREME imo
Itama somebody should make a creepypasta version of this
i also got anxiety at the dark after this szenes xD
RealHatersGonnaHate and its E
Pathetic.
Man, I loved that game as a kid but DAMN, the death scene was so terrifying to watch!

best part of the ps1 era
Back when e really meant for everyone.
even in 2020 there is no game at this level.
Heart of Darkness is the reason why videogame are before everything: Art.

Thank you very much for this video! I loved this game as a child, but now I can't play it. So I was happy to see this again. Nostalgia.
i'm grateful for the creators of this game, it improved my logic and attention a lot back then.

Is the entire game is a imagine of the boy or is it real?
For a game that's famous for the death scenes, the story is way more wholesome & heartwarming than I expected! It has a really endearing tone.

The final Heart of Darkness stage always gets me. Full of dark eerie atmosphere, young me only felt fear playing that stage... Good memories though.
this is the only PS game that I play for hours and hours in my childhood years. I agree, this deserves a remake.
this could have been a great movie if they put it all together ...
My god! That is a great idea!!!
It kinda looks like something Spielberg would produce or direct.

Man, I could've sworn this game was longer! It took me weeks to get to the end when I played it as a kid, haha.
one of the best animated games for the times
It's very thoughtful of you to show the diverse deaths of Andy at the end of the LP. I wanted to look them up anyway and reminisce. >:-)
I'm playing this now and I'm loving it. What a great game. I used to read reviews of it back in the day but never owned the game until now.

I recommend commander keen and willy beamish.. they aren't exactly like another world (or this) but it reminds me of them
This was such a delightfully creepy game as a child. It's like baby's first horror game.
This game is a masterpiece.
You must seriously love this game.
It was one of the best ever made.
Its hard to show it in the longplay but one of the best things about this game was the death scenes
beautiful game.I spent hours playing this game.

Great game from my childhood!
This game was epic , its a cross between dave and prince of persia in a creative way
This game reminds me of Back to the Future in early scenes. i actually feel nostalgic for neighborhoods, more than the movies/games. remember neighborhoods?

The game looked so cute to me when I first started playing it but after I died a couple times I saw the...darkness of it. Andy can be vaporized, his neck/back are broken, he's crushed flat, and eaten...the list goes on and on!! Surprisingly intense XD
