I can't afford my own but parents are retiring and buying a transporter. I wanna help them out with it and this is a brill idea. Also thinking of putting a reversing camera in for them.
Lovely neat job. But, there is always that possibility of a shunt from the rear damaging it. I was thinking of my Renault Master rear door, but above the window. I really need to get the spare wheel on my offside back door below. As it takes up so much luggage space. I successfully put an air vent in. Had the hook up under the bonnet but now going to try locating it on the side of the van.
Nice idea and certainly better than drilling the side panel which I was about to do. I am a little concerned about the hinge rusting. Perhaps a very generous coating of grease may help. Still, a very neat idea.
Quite interesting as thats where i would site plug. Are you putting a magnet catch to secure door shut or a wee clamp clip on house kitchen unit doors.
Great tutorial on this! Going to be fitting one of these in the near future. Any tips on mounting the hook up connector ? Did you have to do any drilling to bring it through, Or did the cable just take the same route as the lights cable ? Many thanks again
thanks! hope it helped. It's good to know that people still find it useful. I should have done more of my van conversion! lol Anyway, if i remember correctly, then yes, the cable just routes through existing holes. no drilling required.
Cool original idea but i have some reservations. It doesn't look very strong and i hope the fittings are stainless steel. Did you use a magnet to latch it shut?
You did a decent job, overall. Thumbs up from me. I think I would have found a better hinge, perhaps one that opened wider, and also one that was not as mechanically stiff as that one which, I think, is designed for a heavier application. Perhaps treating the screw holes to avoid corrosion too? And being VERY persnickety here, but the clear perspex doesn't hide all of the ugly adhesive very well when open, but some vinyl could put that right.
thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated! Yeah, it's not the prettiest. At the time of creating there were no videos on this, but hopefully the people who have watched this have been able to do a better job than i did. :) Having said that, it's still going strong. I did actually put hammerite in the screw holes to protect against rust and every now and again i'll spray the hinge with silicon spray to protect it. I've also noticed that you can now get smaller EHUs which are easier to conceal IMO. Thanks again!
@@baddevotions did you just leave the door bit open when you had the hook up connected? I'm prob going to put a small notch in the side of the panel you adjusted, so that the lead can pass out and just drop down infront of the rear door
Great video! I wish I had seen this before I paid a monkey to do something similar and made a balls of it… A) fitting it on the wrong side and B) just doing a very very poor job! So having to rectify this myself and Carey out the job on the correct side. What thickness of Perspex did you use? Thanks Niall
I didn't catch if you said that the rear door keeps it shut? For us with barn doors, I wonder if the left hand side would be easier, as it would save opening both van doors before opening the electric cover? I think I want a hookup, I'm tempted to put an oil heater on a timer so that it doesn't freez. (Or even a bathroom type fan heater so I can see that it's defrosted before leaving the house).
Don't think you can hide it in the same place. With barn doors, that's where your lower hinges go. So if there's something there, it will only be exposed with the door open
Hi How many "metal" layers do you have to drill through please. First time conversion on my 09 T32 LWB and trying to see how to feed cables through so wondering on the hole drilling bit. Hope you still watching comments and would appreciate help. Cheers Simos
i cannot for the life of me remember how many layers i had to drill through for the cable. in fact not even sure i had to drill anything. for the screws, it's just one layer if i remember correctly.
notorious airsoft hi sorry for the delay. I can’t remember where I got it from. Really sorry about that. I want to say 12vplanet but I really am not sure
Pretty well tbf. I spray it every now and again with silicon spray to keep water off. I might do a follow up video so people can see before i sell the van.
this guy is a genius, holes will be duly cut in the stealth monster!

Good job mate I’m going to do the same to my t5 in the morning. You’ve gave me the confidence to go ahead and do it 👍🏼
Neil Thomas davies thanks! Hope it helps you!
This is epic! I'm tempted to have a go on my T6 project. I'll watch the video in more detail when back from work...
Sticks- like the best and only
Good guide video. There has been no how to videos on it untill yours. So thats the next job on my van. Thank you very much.
you are welcome! let me know how you get on. I still haven't figured out a decent catch yet, so if you suss it out give me a shout :)
Excellent video! I’ve just bought a T5 to convert, and this was one of the jobs I had planned. All I need now is a Dremel!
Glad I could help!
Going to give this a go today I think. Nervous though as I struggle hanging a picture up straight!
Great video
🤞mine goes as well!
How did it go am going to be givin this a try soon
@@socialising6037 yeah done it. Hardest part is finding the correct glue. But no it worked great and looks decent too
I’m not a vw van owner but definitely a great idea and job well done 👍
Good video, you can buy a hinge that would have opened far wider then a standard one
Good work! We are going to do this on our T5 soon :-)
Great vid mate been looking for one on this for awhile
Great job man, Thanks a lot
Glad the video is still useful. 👍
(and don't ya love that dremel cutting disc!)

sorry for the late reply! tbf, if i had a shunt from the back i'd be more worried about other areas of the van than the rear door :)

MrPhil67 I spray it with silicon from time to time. Seems to be ok so far.
great, better than the £150 ones you can buy. could you put a link the the 240v socket you used, seems to fit perfect in the vid. Thanks
Thanks! I actually can’t remember where I got the EHU socket from. I think you can get smaller form factor ones now but could be wrong.
Very, very cool!
I used a Stanley knife instead of the Dremil as the plastic is quite soft and then used Velcro which is not as good as a hinge but works OK
neil mortimore that sounds like a good idea actually. 👍
I would have tried to use 2 hinges for better strength/stability.
Yes. It’s definitely an option.
Looks very cool. Great Job
Quite interesting as thats where i would site plug. Are you putting a magnet catch to secure door shut or a wee clamp clip on house kitchen unit doors.
Hey! No magnetic catch or anything. Stays shut with no problem.

@@AshtonLiveBand The door doesn't quite close fully, but at a glance it looks closed. I did consider putting a notch in, but didn't end up doing it.
How much room is behind and what hookup did you use to fit ?
Is this your hook up - to connect to an electricity supply? It looks like a female socket. Male plugs don’t have a sprung cap.
Great video!

Whoops, sorry about last comment - shopping around and found sprung caps on both male and female surface mounts.
ah - no worries! Sorry for the delay in replying. Hope you managed to get sorted in the end. 👍

Let you know how I get on
Note only works with a tailgate!!
Tempted to put my fresh water inlet there too - can you think of any reason why that would be a bad idea?
Frank Fisher none that I can think of. But then I am not a pro lol! If you do it let me know!
Maybe put the electric inlet over the fresh Walter inlet, so no Walter can drip down on the electric inlet🤷♂️ dont know if that's useful
There is a kit available now for this but it's £125.
Yes I think you are right. It probably looks a lot neater than this, but £125 does seem steep. I guess that's scene tax for you lol
Great video but where did you get the sockit from i cant find one as small

What year t5 was this ?
Ben Rowe 2013 t5.1
How well has that hinge (designed for indoor use) survived out in the weather?
Pretty well tbf. I spray it every now and again with silicon spray to keep water off. I might do a follow up video so people can see before i sell the van.
U should of lined up hinge be4 hand no need to pack up all that perspex
It's a T6 not a T5.1
100% sure this is a T5.1 :D
