The Costco return thing happens with every seasonal item tbh, trees at Christmas, pools in summer. Eventually your account will get flagged for it, but generally they don't care because we make almost nothing on selling things (it's why the cashiers don't care if "Well YoU jUsT lOsT a SaLe," from someone trying to borrow their friend's membership. They lose money from letting a non-member buy stuff, but still retained a few pennies of profit from accepting a return and keeping the real member happy enough to renew their card next year).
