This actually helped me a lot, I've been really struggling to learn fry screaming lately and I've basically came to terms with everything you've said feeling as though I'll never learn your style (because it is awesome and you are my favorite vocalist) but I do know how to belt some good low screams and do false chord really well. And I think from now on I will embrace that because of this video. Thank you, I really needed this!
Wow, thank you! The most simple & effective advice I have ever heard. Seriously grateful for you! I have watched all kinds of videos & was trying to take the knowledge too literally & applying it all but my gut always told me to do exactly what you said, which is embrace what comes to me naturally!
@@senza4591 you do realize fit for a king is a Band with Christian lyrics, and inspiration right? Also worship the lord with a joyful noise. Key word melody/ music is a noise to somepoeple. Now, stop dude
This may sound dumb (I’ve been “screaming” for about 13-14 years), but my sound depends heavily on my mindset/the type of music I’m feeling at the time. If I’m feeling death metal and that’s my mood for music, I can belt em out. If I’m feeling more into Black Metal that day then i go for mostly shrill banshee like highs. I can do both, but they sound better if it’s what is resonating with me more because I’m putting more of my heart and soul into it. I also do “false chords”, frys make literally zero sense to me til this day and I’m close to being in my 30’s now. But in terms of progress I was doing shitty inhales. This is before the time I previously said. If yoy want to count inhales make it almost 16 years lol. But definitely agree with just do with whatever is comfortable. Nothing wrong with drawing inspiration from other vocalists, but dont try being them, you’re settling yourself up for a lot of disappointment, and physical pain and discomfort. Trust me, ive been there.
I really want to learn to sing and scream but it's really hard trying to determine if the song I'm trying to sing along to is impossible just because i suck, or because the vocalist I'm trying to follow is outside my natural range. Sometimes It feels natural and I feel good about my tone, other times it feels like I'm shredding my throat up sounding flat with weak screams. I'm sure consistent practice will help me a lot but it's pretty frustrating right now. Love FFAK btw, and I'm super stoked to hear y'all's new stuff.
You have to keep in mind, the person in that song you are singing along to (depending on the artist) has dedicated their life to sound the way they sound. So don’t be hard on yourself.
I’ve been screaming since last december and I don’t name my screams at all or like categorize them. I can do almost ANY scream you could ask me to (More common screams and then more technique like will ramos or more power like alex terrible.) Fit For A King is the band that got me into screaming music and all I wanted to do when I started listening to you was so it myself. So I did. To those of you starting out I’d say don’t be afraid to be loud and experiment. It shouldn’t be insanely hard or have to hurt your throat to scream.
Its a very good point. In my old band we had 2 vocalists, me and another guy. He could not do highs to save his life. They had no power and were incredably quiet. So he just embraced this and focused on his lows which became badass and brutal. I have a naturally wide vocal range so i could do both but he didnt and couldnt. Everyone is different and you should just do what you can do the best that you can. Then it will become easier to expand your vocal range
In fry scream it is really easy to hold your screams longer, and I can say it, as I am a fry screamer, but this is not a real point tho. Breath control is a technique that must be practiced and mastered if you really wanna a have a long-life scream/growl.
@@immortallix I had a hard time with that too. I have a video up (its kinda long) if you wanna look. I taught myself how to hold long phrases by warming up by blowing as if I'm blowing through a straw. Or you can actually use a straw. It teaches you chest compression and diaphragm control. Literally just grab a straw, blow through it for a warm up. Now do your normal scream technique, but mix it with this new breath technique.
Ryan Kirby was right, not just ryan but same thing goes with Melissa Cross as well ... But I may not sometimes agree with my music as pitch vocals (Frank Rico) or choir (Mrs. Cherchain) teacher at Bell Gardens HS in LA especially other different teachers that nearly our parent's age if you're old nearly 50s cuz they may be different than Kirby and Cross
I think you put that pretty well. When I started screaming I started with the whole “dog bark” or “growl” scream I think when people say False Chord that’s what they are referring too, but I really wanted to mix up my singing with my screaming and I could not get the whole concept of fry down, until one day I did and I found it didn’t hurt nearly as much. Now with a few years of practice it doesn’t hurt at all and it’s my go to scream. I don’t even touch the false chords anymore because they did not work for me. My lows I don’t even know what to call them because they are not connected to my Fry’s or my False Chords, but they sound much better and are the easiest way to for me to do harsh vocals because for some reason it takes so little effort idk why. So I do know what you mean by neither. I cannot do highs to save my life though that has never changed and I’ve tried quite a bit to learn them. I think it’s safe to say my range is from really low guttural types to mid range fry screams.
Good video, Kirby. Do you remember me? I met you at Warped Tour last August, and it was the first time seeing Fit for a King performing live. I have a live recording of your band's performance, so feel free to check that out. I scream for fun. The ones I like the most are the high scream, and screeching. Screeching is probably the one I am capable of doing because I have a high voice. I do some harsh, growling, but I am not great at it. Pig squeal, it is too tense for me. I tried it, not good at it. I like to mess around with my voice by singing, rapping, whispering, other techniques, and find out what I can and can't do. I even tried to imitate your vocals. Not a good idea. Hehe. You are one of my favorite vocalists. Also, you had been feature on Sanctuary International Matrix's Top 10 Christian Metal Screamers and Growlers. Feel free to check it out too. I am going to think about if I can make it to your shows in the future. I can't spend that much money on concerts. There are priorities I need to take care of. I hope it's all good. I wish you well to have an awesome tour. This is all I have to say. Thank you for the great music. God bless. Stay strong. :)
It's so true man, I can scream fairly well in my opinion, but doing what you do, or even highs the way Jimmy Ryan does, my voice just can't handle it. I can do stuff similar to Mattie Montgomery, or Mike H even, trying to do the style you do just does not under any circumstance work for me lol.
Btw I have high screamed before once I have it up on RUclips under mishstgk9 hell then go to my page Stephen Greene and look up N.P.F.A.C. Short vocal cover if you wanna see
Dont pull your tongue back into your soft palate when you do highs. Raise your larynx to adjust pitch instead of squeezing air between your tongue and soft palate.
Good video, I love the FFAK. I got a quastion though. I somehow can't get a good feel for my diaphagram and I quickly proceed to fail anything I try. Is it a matter of time? Do you suggest any like breathing exercises that could improve this?

I'm not sure but I probably started growling when I was 8 years old and I tried to sound like a frog (I played a frog in school spectacle lmao).
im sure your frog sound wasn't similar to growl
Do a video on how to hold screams for a long duration
I'd be interested in this too, idk if my lungs just suck but I can't hold screams more than a few seconds
Breath control.
