Ma'am you have to put a 9volts battery in order for the x10k resistance range to function. That is why when you put it on the x10k range it doesn't move even if you put a very low resistance or a very high resistance resistor on x10 range the needle will not move even a bit.
The model of the VOM that has Range x10K needs a 9 Volts battery aside from the two 1.5V battery. Those without Range x10K need only 2 pcs. of 1.5 AA batteries :)
