    Great lecture, as I read this 9 years later! Surprised you did not mention the main advantage of analog meters over digital meters. With an analog meter it easy to visualize fluctuating signals as opposed to a digital meter displaying rapidly changing numbers.

    Thank you professor, I grew up with analog and migrated to digital, but still use both. You are correct in pointing out there are advantages to using analog meters in certain applications. I own a Triplett meter 630 NS and a Fluke 867B digital meter, both have a place on my bench.

    You should zero your meter AFTER selecting your ohm scale. This is because some meters use different sets of internal batteries, depending on the scale selected.

    I have the USN military version the an/psm4a meter. I do remember using the simpson 260 vom. As to parallax problem some meters had a mirror in a band across the meter face. You would look until you only saw the needle. Is there anyway to get the an/psm-4a meter calibrated. the PSM-4a comes in a very heavy black case. The meter is made rugged to serve in harsh conditions. Do they still make something like the simpson 260. It was a big deal, 20K ohms per volt so it would not load down active circuits. USN 60-80 retired 1980

    Thanks for the lesson! One question: You zeroed out the ohmmeter at R X 10,000. I couldn't do that on mine unless I set the scale at R X 1?

    • @Torogol85
      @Torogol85 5 лет назад +1

      Hmmm... still no answer.
      The ohmmeter can be zeroed on the three resistance ranges. The meter must be zeroed each time a user switches resistance ranges

    • @kb9knd
      @kb9knd 9 месяцев назад +1

      Most analog meters use a 1.5 volt battery for the lower ohm ranges and a 9 volt or higher battery for the highest ranges. If your meter works on the lower ranges and not the higher, check your high voltage battery.

    How to know where will i set the selector range in measuring resistance? Can i set it to x1 if i will measure a 50ohms resistance? because in voltage the selector must be greater than the battery that you're testing. Is it the same in resistance or not?

      You must take a look to the highest resistance value in order to set a meter on the proper resistance range. The R times 1 range is good for 50 ohms because the Rx1 reaches up to 2 thousand ohms

    reads approx. 129 VAC, 25.9 VAC, and 5.19 VAC. Rouuuughly. Hard to tell without Parallax correction. ;) boby bober is correct.
    I teach this as well, and that is a REALLY common mistake when showing others how to read the analog scales. Funny though he even points it out at the end.

    • @warplanner8852
      @warplanner8852 9 лет назад

      So that's why one should always opt for the VOMs with the mirrored scales. Parallax is a surprising phenomenon.

    Nasty stuff, I'm glad I never have to deal with those and just use a digital meter from now on! So what can an analogue meter do that a digital one can't? He never mentioned it even though he said he would!

    You're using the term "calibrate" wrong. What you're doing is zeroing the meter, not calibrating it.
    Calibration is the process of checking and adjusting the meter against a calibration standard to insure accurate measurements.

  • @warplanner8852

    all the electricians i know and work with can not use a meter ( analog or digital) ,they just use a non-contact tester , they don't know what PV, PPV ,RMS means etc,etc ,on a analog meter ,the meter for them is useless ,the digital meter with all the functions ,,,,,,, like NPN,PNP , MFD, HZ, etc,etc,etc,etc they should stay away from them , they was made for electronics technicians not for electricians , most the electricians only have on they truck a NEC book and a non-contact tester on they pockets ,but 99% of them don't even have a code book on a job site because they are lost on a code book also You dont even know what is up there Sir ,i fond electric engineers can't use a meter ,,,,,,,i see that in my life ,,,,,, sir i'm 90 years old ,i see all in my career and in my life
