The worbly sound is called tremolo.. it's a cool effect they used to use a lot in the 60s and 70s. Great reaction. 👍
You missed the part where they got married: "Just for me the church bells rang."
Then, he left without warning, no divorce, didn't take time to say goodbye or tell a lie.
The warbling in the guitar is intentional, and gives the song an eerie, haunting feeling.
David I’m afraid they miss a lot of things
@@elizabethfranco1284 Thank you Elizabeth.
"... they miss a lot of things."
I tune in just to see the latest example of how utterly clueless that Brad can once again manage to be.
Talk about thick as a brick.
A tremolo bar effect on the guitar here which accompanies Nancy Sinatra is a complete mystery to his confounded ears.
Good grief.
I never saw that as her marriage, but rather funeral. He killed her.
@@soraimio That's the valid "Kill Bill" interpretation. But, the song was written many years before Quentin Tarantino came along and used it for his blood drenched movie.
In the 1960s when Sony Bono wrote it for his wife Cher to sing, wedding bells would be the understood interpretation -- especially because the person singing is alive to sing it.
@@soraimio "Now he's gone, I don't know why...and to this day, sometimes I cry" -- that's why I think the church bells refer to a marriage, not a funeral...the lyrics convey a sense that she's still alive, and still left wondering why he left her, and the final 'shot me down' reflects his sudden departure without a word. But hey, good art can be interpreted many ways!
Brad, that effect is called a Tremolo. It’s used a ton in surf rock guitar music and rockabilly.
Yes , it’s essentially a contraption that turns the volume up and down over and over really fast. Sounds all warbly.
Sonny Bono originally wrote this song for Cher. They claimed it was "Inventive" and considered it to be a big hit. However they stated there's no real meaning behind it. Nancy remade it and is remarkable. Cher's original version is great too.
Sonny and Cher did it too I believe. This is best version.
Disagree totally ..The best is the original. Cher had a big hit with it in 1966. bought the single. I do not remember this being a hit at all for Nancy. I think Nancy is great but this was not a signature song for her at all. @@RicoBurghFan
as is Lady Gaga's
I like Cher's version better. As for Brad, the Kill Bill eyes have it!!
The warble sound is an effect on the guitar. They meant to play it like that. Good version, but the Sonny and Cher original is better. Give it a listen.
The fact that Quentin Tarantino can bring back old actors, singers and songs back into whole new generations and culture and it all fits shows you how good he is.
I'd love to have a look at his record collection.
No doubt!
The guitar was recorded with heavy reverb and echo to give it the warbly plaintive sound.
Tarrentino has an encyclopedic knowledge of old songs, from many genres, and can insert them into his films with uncanny precision. Hard to think of another director who does it better.
Guy Richie?
@@johnstjohn6658 Edgar Wright? James Gunn?
The warbly sound is called a tremelo it used to be popular in the 60s. Just an effect for guitars. It is supposed to sound that way
She’s Frank’s daughter, my favorite song of hers is These boots were made for walking.
Hell yeah, that was a great song
Loved Boots, but my favorite was Phaedra.
She didnt write that song
?? Did someone say she did write it? Nobody in this thread.
Glad you finally got to hear this one. The aspect you missed is that they had a relationship - it's implied they were married - as adults and which ended when he left her without warning or explanation. Guy just ghosted her one day.
My baby Shot me down...dang...DANG!
You can have your baby arrested for that!
that is the studio version and yes it sounds like that for a reason. surf guitar kinda sorta
When Lex knew it was from Kill Bill I got way too happy. I fuckin love Tarantino films
seen the kill bill movies few times each
this makes me wanna watch em all again
which I will this week lol
Overrated
The guitar and her vocals are drenched in reverb. The warble is vibrato. This is one of the most beautiful sounding guitars I have ever heard.
Listening to this again, I can hear echoes of it in David McWilliams' song, "The Days Of Pearly Spencer", 2 years later. A song that I also like a lot.
Nancy Sinatra was way ahead of her time just like her father Frank Sinatra. A young Nancy Sinatra would be a world sensation today!
Also, Nancy Sinatra sang the theme song to a James Bond film, "You Only Live Twice (1967)." It's actually one of the better Bond theme songs.
The reverb sound was on the guitar on purpose. Reverb was kind of a big deal back in the late 60s. In fact, on some new cars back then some higher end models like Pontiacs had a reverb button that would give the car radio music a reverb sound when it came out of the speakers, this is before stereo was in cars so this is how they enhanced the sound! It actually sounded pretty good. My friend's dad had this on their new 1965 Pontiac Bonneville and my friend and I looked under the dash to see how this reverb sound was made. It was a series of metal springs inside of a small box under the dash that somehow was wired through the box to physically add the reverb sound from the springs. Not sure how it worked but that was how it was done. This reverb sound was available for a few years on new cars in the late 60s it came like that from the factory. High tech for the day!
There were coils on each end, the input coil caused the spring to vibrate and this would induce a signal in the output coil. Since there was essentially a spring in between, the audio would bounce back and forth creating the reverb effect.
@@kkampy4052 Wow thanks, a very little known part of automobile history! It really sounded good in it's day, I like it!
@@artmanjohn2 the downside was that any mechanical motion of the spring would induce voltage in the output as well. So bouncing around would induce sounds in the output
@@kkampy4052 Yes it did, I remember that!
Tremolo is what you hear more on the guitar sound (there´s some reverb too).
I think they used panning between the instrumental channels in production for the effect. It's also on the studio version.
Nancy Sinatra did some great songs with a guy named Lee Hazelwood... try a song called "Some Velvet Morning"
Yeah like the previous people say before that sound is called tremolo it’s amplitude modulation very popular in the 60s
The Grass Roots " I would wait a million years" 1970's best
The guitar sound is just amazing
Have you heard Angelina Jordon sing this? She won 'Norway's Got Talent' at the age of 8.
The tremolo is a guitar effect and rolling off the stage is because there is no graceful way to get up off the floor in a mini skirt.
She's into Tarantino too, OMG, Dude you are so lucky. WOW 😲
She said 'the church bells rang' meaning they got married as adults only to have him leave. The childhood game they played took on a whole new meaning. My Baby Shot Me Down.
The church bell rang just for her… he left her at the altar
@@robynmatheson7687 That's a reasonable and insightful interpretation but I don't think it has to mean that. It could mean that it was her own special day, not some other girl's wedding, and it was only later that he walked out on her.
Quentin Tarantino is a master of using preexisting songs to great affect in his films. Many directors have tried to do it as well but they ain't him. The only movie he got someone to score was THE HATEFUL EIGHT. In the process he got Ennio Morricone his only competitive Oscar for Best Score after having some of the most recognizable scores of all time. 🙏🏼
Ennio Morricone is the 🐐
I actually know his music supervisor of many decades, Mary Ramos; I used to play in a post-punk band with her when we were in our early twenties. She has done work for a lot of other people but she and Quentin have had a special relationship for a long time. And she really is amazing.
She has told me many stories about choices made for song selection and sounds and effects and so forth, because in addition to being the music supervisor, she also works closely with him on sound effects. I always tell her I'm so jealous of her because I would love to do that! 😀
Marty also knows how to do it.
Lex is so adorable
It was an effect on the guitar amp called "Tremolo".
That warble sound was from a device after the guitar. Before the speakers.
Never heard that song like it
Nancy Sinatra's done some boss stuff. These Boots being an obvious one. Even her covers were incredible thanks to The Wrecking Crew's backing.
Tremolo on the amplifier makes the guitar sound like that.....very popular in the 60s....
These Boots Are Made For Walking and the best James Bond song You Only Live Twice.
The guitar sounds funny cause they're using a Tremolo effects pedal on it :)
The guitar has a lot of reverb on it but if the tape has stretched that would affect the sound. Everything in the song didn't happen when he was six - that was the start of their relationship.
That´s tremolo, not reverb.
By far my favorite Nancy song was these boots are made for walking
Guitar by the great Billy Strange.
Lex does love to recognize a song
The one that reminded her of her father. Very emotional
So Nancy Sinatra went on to protest against the Vietnam war she got a lot of criticism for that and then now she’s fighting for equal women’s rights and she’s I don’t know how old but she still looks very beautiful
I am more used to the Cher original, which is excellent, this version is good too. Nancy's collaborations with Lee Hazelwood are great
Can't go wrong with Nancy Sinatra. So many great songs like this one. You should hear "My Number One" by Luv' from 1980.
The funny sound is a tremolo effect on the guitar. The volume is electronically varied up and down quickly. Originally built into guitar amps but they can be individual effects too.
Lex adores CCR. They use that effect a lot. Midnight Special intro is an example.
That warble (vibrato) was actually done on purpose. I remember hearing it when it came out and I thought it sounded weird. Still do.
I always liked Nancy Sinatra. Thanks for sharing.
That 'warbly' or shimmering watery sound of the guitar is called TREMELO - where the volume oscillates up and down by way of a control feature on the amplifier. Fender guitar mistakenly named their 'whammy' bar on Stratocasters a Tremelo Arm, when in fact it actually creates VIBRATO, which is a variation of note Pitch, NOT Volume.
She also did the title song for You Only Live Twice, one of the bond films
Songs have original locations...one learns something new every day. :)
Can Tarantino pick a song to match a movie scene or what!
Hey Brad and Lex, Nancy Sinatra's biggest hit was the song, These boots are made for walking, or just Boots. Anyway, Lex, Megadeth covers her song on their first album. Check it out!!!
fender reverb amp. old school.
Billy Strange. He also played guitar for The Beach Boys, Jan & Dean, The Ventures, Willie Nelson, The Everly Brothers, Wanda Jackson, Randy Newman, and Nat King Cole, among others.
Definitely Kill Bill type vibes. Lol. The desert, surf, stoner, fuzzy rock sound and guitars. Tarantino likes this kind of music on his movies. Including this song, good ear! It's the playing style of the guitar and amp settings (reverb, echoes).
Yall have done her other hit "These Boots Are Made For Walking".
Frank's daughter, pretty lady. Lots of songs from her in the '60s and '70s.
I suggest Drummer Man by Nancy. It features the late great Hal Blaine on drums.
Big reverb on the instruments.
Nancy Sinatra didn't have a lot of hits, but she had a couple of the most iconic -- this and These Boots are Made for Walking.
There was also a nice dance remix of Nancy Sinatra's version of this song - worth checking out.
I’m with you Lex. Who knew that was Nancy Sinatra in Kill Bill. Now we both know😄
Congrats on the upcoming baby btw, I think you guys will make great parents. Both of you are very likable. 👍
Brad, this was a popular guitar sound at the time and I've used it myself. On those older tube amps, they often had a tube dedicated to producing tremolo, which is that kind of vibrating watery sound that you hear and you can either make it really strong or just barely there, then usually like here you also add reverb to it. The effect is very intentional.
Such a 60's vibe!
They were playing it live…that’s why it sounded different
The guitar has a lot of tremolo, which make the warbling sound.
Yes, it was played in Kill Bill.
Trivia: at age 54 Nancy broke the playboy playbook and appeared as the centerfold spread in playboy
Brad--the warbly tone was a cool effect they have on some songs...gives it a cool atmosphere.
Love it - puts me in a total 60's vibe...
It's so crazy that you guys know Kill Bill! I know his music supervisor who would have selected this song and she's really great at that kind of thing, picking old stuff, new stuff, predictable stuff, obscure stuff and just weaving it together perfectly.
Do you remember in Django Unchained where the hero finally gets to meet his wife in the brothel and they are playing the most haunting music in the background? That was her idea to mash up a Kanye song with this very Eastern flute melody thing. It was a really daring move but it worked out so well! Beyond just being his music supervisor, she also works closely with him on a lot of the sound effects and will often get a second credit just for that.
For example, she once asked me, did I remember the gunfight near the end where the sound of the bullets hitting the bodies sounded extra juicy and kind of just really overdone? And I said yeah, I really really did notice that and it just totally ads to this dramatic effect at the climax of the movie. And she said that they worked together intensively on that to get it just right.
AW Man my sides are bursting with your take on this......... so funny...
What an amazing song, in every regard.
Yeah Nancy. You're right Lex. It's in kill bill. Great song
You simply MUST listen to Jay Black, " Cara Mia " 2001, PBS. Jay of the Jay and the Americans doing the big hit Cara Mia - Live.
Great tune!
Good job Lex! This is from Kill Bill.
Original version is by Cher and just as great. If you haven’t yet, react to These Boots are Made for Walking by Nancy Sinatra
You guys should react to Kill Bill 1 and 2!! Love em 💙😘
Always a surprise when you find out pop songs aren't written to fit a script, as they so commonly are
I love this song. Sonny Bono wrote a masterpiece.
IMHO, Nancy's best song was the theme song for the James Bond 007 film YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE (United Artists, 1967) - reaction, please.
Great reaction choices!!
You could try a graduation speech made into a song by a movie director in the 90's ➡ "Everybody's Free To Wear Sunscreen"
It was live , no lip sync with a great warbler guitar on purpose, great post guys
There was a dance version made of this a few years back now, it was great.
Love this song
Wow. She says straight out that wedding bells happened, they grew up and knew Love and maybe even married, then he left. The song is about devestating heart break. It literally has nothing to do with kill bill, other than this is one of the jams that was in that movie.
Nancy Sinatra is such an underrated talent. You need to check out some of her duets with Lee Hazlewood like Summer Wine and Some Velvet Morning.
You really need to hear the Terry Reid version from the Superlungs album. So much more to chew on.
Never cared for her when she was pop in the sixties but have come to appreciate what a good singer she was. Maybe it was kill bill that got me. I think the off key distorted guitar is intentional.
She also had some boots that were actually made for walking.
They'd totally trip over her duets with Lee Hazelwood. "Some Velvet Morning" would break Brad's brain.
I had this album. Nancy Sinatra was the essence of cool.
You are right sir! the guitar has a strong warble to it but that's intentional although the sound itself was a little off as well.
Every young girl had their hair styled like Nancy's in the day of her fame. Just like they did Britany spears hair in her day.
Please do her duet with her dad, Frank Sinatra, called Somethin' Stupid which was a #1 hit.
I see the following story when I hear:
They grew up together, played bang bang and she was always his victim. But she didn't care, she already loved him.
Time passed, he never forgot that joke. They got married and he quickly died leaving her alone.
Lex, the song came out in the late 60's...so not sure it is fair to say the song is from Kill Bill Vol#1 (truly underated movie).
Lex calling out Kill Bill. You are my favorite.
Same Lex🖒 "Kill Bill"😊
Lana Del Rey 😍
They married "just for me the church bells rang"...
The best cover of this is from Angelina Jordan. Do it for fun. You will be amazed again just like Bohemian rhapsody. You've only done one song from Angelina. Imagine an 8 year old singing about being a 5 year old.
Listen to the version by Terry Reid. He was the first choice to be in Led Zeppelin and he recommended Robert Plant. Terry was too busy on tour opening for The Rolling Stones.
Vanilla Fudge also did a great version of this song.
Trixter “Bang Bang”
The tremolo instrumentation was intentional
