  • Have a look inside a cheap violin you can buy on the internet...it look slovely on the outside, but on the inside you can see how its put together and why it might not produce the best sound. Actually at $99 its probably Ok value for money as a violin...but not something you would want to learn on!

I remember back in the 90's that cheap electric guitars were being made with awesome looking flame maple tops, the truth was that the tops were covered in a colour photocopy of flame maple and then the varnish was used to hide that fact, I think they got the nickname "foto flame maple", the bodies were actually thick plywood.

I bought a violin kit for $68 dollars so I could do some experiments. I even posted a couple of videos. The sound is not good but what would really stop a person was the setup. The part of the chinrest that would touch my neck was carved to a sharp edge. The strings were thin metal wires. The nut extended past the fingerboard and gouged my finger when reaching back for the half steps. The nut height for the A string was much too low. There was a large gap between the frog and the stick and it hurt when I would accidentally press my finger into it or slide across it.
I liked your video and what’s actually inside a violin is very interesting. But, I suspect that a beginner would have a better chance getting a good start if they buy a violin that was setup and checked out by someone who knows what they are doing.

This is my experience too, the time/cost to do the setup though you could put towards a better instrument ;)

Thanks for nice disassembly video! Yes I was expecting a plywood violin when I bought my Glarry for $40, and I love it. It's perfect for someone like me who want to play slow pop melodies on a violin. sounds great to me. And I don't care if it's plywood as I have no ambition to be a concert violinist. LOL Just an FYI, I had a "real violin" bought from a professional violin shop in mid-Manhattan decades ago, and this cheap Glarry violin is much better than my old "real" violin.

For what they are they are pretty good for the money. Often thpough they are misrepresented as something else though.

This violin is sold under an Australian brand as a "real wood" violin. Its made in China though...where most student grade violins are made these days ...and many professional instruments as well

Used to be able to get a Stentor SR1018 for under a 100, real maple and spruce. Little over at 119 now..

Its $100 its not going to be solid wood at that price . Most rentals are plywood . The problem is most luthiers sell a violin for 3k thats really should be priced at $800

Plutôt que de critiquer la manufacture de violon pour ceux qui n'ont pas les moyens de payer cher des violon qui n'en sont pas de meilleur qualité ! Vous devriez d'abord aprendre à filmé et à faire des commentaires cohérents.....

Sorry - "suit a beginner" is BS! Get the best you can afford - Crappy cheap instrument =crappy cheap sound = disillusionment and failure. 99% guaranteed. If you are not prepared to spend $3-5k you will never spend the $ on a good teacher.. Again 99% failure.
