- Not long ago I visited ship historian Peter Knego at his home in Oceanside California. Peter gifted the Aurora a batch of ceiling discs that graced the ceiling of the show lounge aboard the Island Princess ( The Love Boat ) They were in bad shape and there were few options on how to restore these discs. I decided to add a layer of Gold to the discs or at least try my hand at this art form.
Stick around for the second half of the video as Peter gives a rare glimpse of Ship Breaking on the beaches of Alang India.

Finally a new video 😍
Lots more to fallow.
@@AuroraRestorationProject when please - I have withdrawal symptoms
I work for the Navy's corrosion control assistance team and wanted to give you a run down in proper preservation... 1.Needle gun the surface to remove old paint and rust (works much better than the air chisel)
1.5 if you sand down to bare metal make sure you use below 40 grit, otherwise you are just polishing the metal and need to needle gun it to rough up the surface
2. Clean the surface -(water and clean rags) you'll want to remove the salts (give it some time to breathe)...MOST important step to preventing rust
3. First coat of primer - make sure it is thick (10 ml wet, 8 dry) and give it at least a day to start to cure
4. Light sanding of the primed surface (60 grit)
5. Prime again (thinner coat, use a roller), give it a day to cure
6. Paint the final top coat
Let me know if you have any questions!
UK uses a lot of winter salt so our cars suffer corrosion on non plated parts like subframes. I had my back axle grit blasted and zinc metal sprayed. It’s second best to hot dip galvanising. It’s used on our local fishing fleet so can’t be bad. The spray finish is rough so a slight brush with 150 grit levels the bumps. A zinc compatible epoxy primer follows with a final coat of choice.
Thank you, Peter Knego!
You were great.
Wow , peters house is amazing with all this liner and ship artefacts !
Off to visit peters website 🎉
CONGRATULATIONS!! Follow the whole restoration process through youtube from distant Uruguay. A tight hug and someday I will be in his beautiful ship singing salsa and boleros!!! A huge hug!
Thanks for the kind words. She’s definitely a huge but satisfying undertaking. Wouldn’t trade the experience for the world.
@@AuroraRestorationProject Undoubtedly, the effort is enormous, the human and material cost, thousands of hours of work, that is "LOVE" My father was a sailor in the Uruguayan navy for many years, he sailed as a helmsman and gunner on a Cannon-class destroyer "ROU DE 1 URUGUAY"... (EX USS Baron of the US NAVY. )
Nice gilding ! Thank you for saving pieces of history. Repurpose, reuse and recycle !
That Dude Peter has a serious passion for his hobby !! Good for him !!👍
With all the rain you are getting it would be a good time to find all the leaks and mark them for welding closed when it dries out .
Funny that you mention that. I took the opportunity to do exactly what you mention. Have been welding them up over the last few days. Some of them however are tricky.
@@AuroraRestorationProject great minds think alike
Remember, water leaks don’t follow a straight line! Water finds its path of least resistance.
As soon as he started listing off all his pieces and showing his house I was like, "he must have a really good contractor." Especially to be handling rare building materials like that. Beautiful though.
I am taking a bow! Chapeau!
Have to come visit some day! 😀
It’s definitely worth the visit
WOW ! what a great job you are doing. and Peter is doing a great job too , thanks for sharing
Peter Knego your home looks so amazing I love what you've done to make your home look so hip and with all the Monarch Furnishings and indonesian artisans and art deco features from all these different cruise ships of the past what a great idea.
Nice work learning how to do that, came out really well.
Fantastic showcasing Peter Knego's home, too!
My friend Chris Blake was Captain of the Love Boat. Chris and I met on SS Nevasa when he was 3rd mate and I was 4th engineering officer back in 74.
Missed you guys!!!
OMG ITS PETER KNEGO
Very fascinating, I knew nothing about that man!
Very cool process, too. He totally seems like somebody you should have more involved in the restoration!
In the restoration footage It appeared like the original paint all around the stairway certainly wasn’t black which is a colour rarely used in interiors for good reason.
Possibly a desperate alteration at a later stage of the ships life to make it look more “modern”. As if it’s some nightclub. The foundation looked white. This could explain why that area around the stairs always gives a dungeon feel in these videos despite having lots of room and mirrors.
Black paint close to the ceiling will always cause an oppressive feeling opposed to white which makes rooms look and feel bigger and airier than they actually are.
If Your objective is to bring more life in the Aurora, consider avoiding the use of colours that are usually associated with death and funerals. Navy blue is a good alternative if a darker hue is required.
Gold lettering stands out just as well on a white background too, only looks heavenly.
Just like that awesome paint job You’re doing on the exterior of the ship.
Wow! what a project! these kind of projects keeps us motivated with our little project ship
Not to bad the gilding , for a first time looks great.
Great job!!! Looks amazing.
Great information
Love what you are doing. The more videos, the more subscribers, the more help.Keep them coming. What a fabulous project!
Greetings from Tucson, Arizona.
I've been following this journey for a year+ and what you've done is miraculous.
When will you be able to host guests?
nice to see the Wappen von Hamburg on your shirt
My father (professional sign writer) used “gold size” for gilding. But he preferred thinned yacht varnish. He added white spirit to a milky consistency. His varnish was brushed on and left to tack. The gold leaf was applied with a chamois leather pad. Then just leave it to dry. Excess gold can be wiped off after a few days. Thinned varnish flows nicely so it’s great for detailed lettering.
Do you allow tours of your vessel? I love ocean liners and would be interested to visit one day.
Its really sad to see something broken up thats taken $$$$$ to build A ship has a soul its almost like a living thing its so great to see some stuff reused from another ship the Aurora is going to look even more beautiful when she is finished
Agreed, fuck those brutes at Alang.
Here is now hoping even more that you get aroura restored as she is now the oldest surviving post world war 2 cruise ship not destined to be destroyed in the next year with the news of MV Astoria (ex MS Stockholm) heading for the scrapers I want more to see that aroura lives on for many many more years as at least something that gen Z classic ship enthusiasts (yes they are a thing) like me could go on board and see what the ships of old were like in person instead of just by reading books and accounts of people who were there.
I should clarify there are other post ww 2 cruise ships older then Aurora that survive but they were built before WW2 and converted afterwards (sea cloud comes to mind) I am going off the date of the ship's original construction not the conversation date.
👍
With the interior steel plate surfaces you may want to consider faring it out to smooth the surface and give it a more upscale finish. With the size of your project I would be in contact with multiple coating companies to see who has the best product and technical services to help you out. Rustolium is a good product but I'm not sure if its the right product for what you're doing.
Exactly my words! Use fairing compound to make the archery bow luxurious. it was a shock to me tot see the archy bow now.
I very much like that idea. Definitely worth looking into.
@@AuroraRestorationProject AWL Grip, a bit costly. But they can give you a lot of information. I do like your videos/project!
Ship Happens have been using a high build paint system. Check out their fishing boat project.
I don’t know Rustoleum but it sounds similar to Hammerite. Frankly I’m not impressed it gets very brittle over time and brush application often looks patchy. It’s also hard to remove and remnants often react with other finishes.
Interesting
Wonder if Peter has stumbled upon any reciprocating steam equipment in his travels? 👀
At least rain lets you know where the leaks are
Did you see the teak deck they were disassembling
At my old job, using the needle chisel to remove paint was always fun for me. Got to stay out of the boss's hair (sometimes it was the other way around).
Should’ve fared out the “Aurora” black background before painting.
I hate to ask but have you ever ultrasounded the thickness of the hull plating ? Do you have some large emergency bilge pumps ?
Does Peter still have anything from the Leonid Sobinov that was scrapped in 1999?
hi how far away are you from doing a will it start video on the engines please
Hi, wath is hapening with Aurora?
Isn't that amazing?!
Just curious......was there a reason you didn't use paint stripper on those discs?
Oh man, I wish you removed all the paint from those disks. Plenty of ways to strip paint down to the base. The old paint texture is clearly showing through the gold leaf. Great work! A massive project you took on.
@@haraldhechler3557 yep, my thoughts exactly, too! The texture is meant to be there, otherwise they're flat and boring
He stated in the video he was csrefully sanding to preserve the sunrise etching on the disc.
Since this is the first time you worked with gold foil, we won't put you through a gild trip! 😅😉
The only thing worse than chipping paint with a needle scaler is doing it without one.
*gilding
Thanks for the heads up
@Aurora Restoration Project cool ship btw!
Question: Why didn't you uses a paint stripper?
Have you reached out to the German government about your project? They might offer some sort of support.
Got to be careful with that sort of thing, over here in Australia if you house ends up on a historic significance list you will have a whole heap of rules regarding what you can and can't do dropped in your lap.
Probably lead paint boys. Just saying.
