It's actually a heartfelt piece about how a relationship erodes over time and communication breaks down, and the urge to tear it all apart and throw it away at times, when all your soul really wants is to make things whole and well again, and to reestablish the understanding you once shared.
I love the way you described the feeling the song gives. The eradication of the modern relationship due to both individuals lack of understanding what the other really wants.
I first heard this song and the line “I know the pieces fit because I watched them fall away” when I was in a really tough time of my life and very young, so I had always thought that the meaning of this song was about a broken soul in a broken person. Now reading the lyrics and comments here, I see it’s about a broken relationship. Still, this idea of one’s internal brokenness really resonated with me then and now, so the song I guess will always mean that to me. “I know the pieces fit” yelled angrily over and over at the end was like a rallying cry for me to come back to oneness within and to heal, making me believe that with enough willpower I might be able to reform. And for me, eventually, I did.
I always thought similarly. I ,of course can see the relationship torn view intended, but I still feel as if it was our own person becoming changed and removed from the perfected self that we had been. I always felt that if our own pieces would fall away, then the us we were meant to be would be lost and the inner being would be significantly lessened and desperate to become truly whole again. Dang! Music can be so many things that I'm sure even the writing hadn't even seen as possible.
My dad would crank this jam to full blast in his "green turd" truck. And we'd just drive. I lost him two weeks ago. This song will always be a piece of him in my heart. "I'll see you later man."
All 4 of these guys could be successful solo artists, but luckily for us they decided to play music together. Incredible just doesn't say enough about the overall talent of every individual member of Tool.
they started a lot of glorious fucking around with polyrhythmy in this album.. though there were moments of it in earlier music, this is when it landed front and center.
Born in '73. Hard/metal fan, just discovered tool. A bit unsettling at first but realizing the beauty of these rhythms, growing on me big time, coming back daily to listen/discover 😊😊
Born in '70. Been passionate with tool in my soul since early 90s. But, it took almost four to six months casually hearing it before I became what I am now because of it's depth and lyrical perfection. It's as if the DNA i have has intertwined with the tool double helix. I wish you joy and emotions that are purely framed within you as you become an opened soul that is what Tool can seem to be a part of. Enjoy your journey! Try A Perfect Circle also maybe the other too. Tool has spread their gifts and each band plays a part in different times of my life
The old Tool videos alone are goosebump-worthy, even without the music. There is so much talent in the designs, the choreography, lights, practical effects. Those videos were one-of-a-kind. I wish there were more.
I typically tell people not to watch the videos at first, nor even live performances, as great as they are. Too distracting. Just the music, and if you must, have the lyrics to hand.
The poetry of this song is so eloquent and precise for describing the deterioration of relationships (of any kind really). It’s perfection. Every time I hear it I can relive any break up. It’s a masterpiece. Where once the pieces fit, through lack of communication and a crumbling of compassion they no longer do. Isn’t that the truth?
It is indeed a sad truth. I'm in it right now and trying to explain to my partner as to why it's happening, but it feels like he only wants to dig a deeper hole and keep on blaming. :/ What can I do?
Yup. Just got over with a relationship with an incredible gal, and at the end is was just like the last verse on the song. After all was said and done All I could do was to remember this song and laugh like a maniac.
I remember when this song debuted on MTV. I was sitting in my buddies living room while he was getting ready. They announce the debut of this song. I was only a very casual Tool fan at the time. By the time it ended I though "holy shit, this is going to be massive!" one of those random vivid memories. Thanks music!
Back when Mtv actually played videos. And it wasn't all mainstream yet. I'm so old I remember when late night Mtv would play "X-rated" versions of popular videos
@@joshshrum2764 I respect it. Haha. I mean, there really is zero denying they are about as amazing as god allows. It’s about what moved me. If it’s purely sound then you can’t get better than Dream Theater. But they do lack any soul to me. Unless I’m on mushrooms. But not anymore. Therefore.
This album got me through such a crazy time I was deep in addiction and living in a car but we had this cd we would listen to every night it's been a long time since I have listened to any Tool I saw them live in NC and will never forget it iam 7 years sober and doing great very thankful for the little things wonderful artist 🙏🖤
Now let's get deep. Tool’s Schism isn’t your typical there’s nae cliché “boo-hoo, they left me” pish. It’s raw, cerebral, and forces ye to confront the bigger picture. The song dissects the collapse of communication, the chasm that opens between two people when understanding crumbles. It’s no just about love - it’s about human connection itself. Schism reminds us that a breakup isn’t always a single, dramatic moment; it’s the slow erosion of something sacred. The lyrics, “I know the pieces fit,” hit like a gut punch. They’re nae lament - they’re a desperate acknowledgement of what’s been lost and a yearning for what might never be rebuilt. This is how breakups should be written about. Not as some self-pitying drivel but as the visceral tearing of two intertwined lives. It’s the art of a breakup, peeling back the emotional layers, makin' you feel the pain but also seein’ the beauty in the breakdown. A Tool-style breakup song makes ye think, makes ye bleed a bit inside. It’s nae just for wallowing - it’s for confronting the mess, the complexity, the fuckin’ humanity of it all Now that's fuckin deep
My step-dad introduced me to Tool about a year or 2 before he passed. Everytime I hear this song I think about that crazy mf. Miss you man, see you in heaven some day.
so sorry for your loss. It is a really great song. Sorry I'm almost 65 and my husband of 40 yeas died almost 7 years ago and my dad died when I was 16. The video is a bit creepy but I do love the music.
Why must thou laugh in the face of curiosity and anger? To cast by thy name shall set us unto thee atmosphere of inner senses. Thy must not speak of the truth, Aristotle taught, but thou must speak by thy's name rather than thy's thighs. Truth is only truth if truth is a truthfully truthful truth. Sad days begoneth, sadly thou shall not cast away what thy's mother has engulfed; as this act contributes to the melancholy of inner sense. In modern times, the only thing thou must be concerned with, is the.. erm.. width of thy's belly; as a hugeth belly could possibly awaken thou. Thou is an entity not known to thy but not known to thou or thigh either. The art of reason is not within reason, as reasonable reason would not be reasonably reasonable, but rather unreasonably unreasonable, and thou does not beg to differ from thy's thighs. One could only imagine a possibility of a rather unreasonable reason to reason with unreason; thou must start the next ice age! Speaking of ice age, thy must not speak of ice; as the only ice of reason is that of thy's thighs. Why art thou not a tool, but rather a weapon? Thy must consider a "weapon" a tool; as weapons are known to begoneth of untools, but thy must understand that the weapon must not disposeth of thy's thighs; but the weapon must only be used to begoneth of thou's pet uncle. Using thy's weapon with intentions of disposing of thy's thighs shall only be viewed as unreasonably unreasonable reason.

I'm 46 years old, I know a lot about music, I've listened to everything there is, all genres of music, I'm a big fan of Metallica, Alice in Chains, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Faith No More, and a lot of electronic music, from Jazz, Drum n Bass, Bands like Massive Attack, Stero MCs, Depeche Mode and I won't go on because I could do it until tomorrow. It's interesting that I knew about Tool all the time and it's one of the few bands I never heard or gave them a chance. I listen to Fear Inoculum since the first day when it came out, I haven't moved away from it.. Until 10 days ago when I decided to listen to the other albums while walking on the street or in the countryside.. What I want to say is that I was speechless by the quality of the rhythms, passionate and infectious riffs and of course the technique and production itself. I want to say that regardless of the lost time, I am so happy and excited that at the age of 46 I have the privilege of listening to Tool as my dearest music that accompanies me day by day even in my dreams, I am totally obsessed with music ..Absolute perversion and art.. Now of course my mission is to transfer my experience to everyone who does not know the miracle called Tool.. Thank you life!

Paradice, i've liked this song ever since I first heard it, years ago. Being able to finally understand the lyrics, because of you, the true greatness of the song really hit me. The full impact of that, since I've *lived* this song, especially the 3rd to last stanza, hit me so hard that I was too stunned to communicate my gratitude to you for supplying the lyrics.
Spiritual yes, enlightenment no. Spiritual enslavement more like it. Schism only serves to separate you from God and embrace the gospel of demons aka aliens
For me it’s the musical k-hole to externally represent my internally chaotic mind, which has a very calming effect as silence and traditionally viewed tranquility is exhausting and blaringly loud. But this music is so relaxing to my mind.
Love Tool. I fell in love with the technical time signatures on the drumming when i first heard them. Now i have seen them live, i fell in love with the psychedelic back drop video they have running throughout the gig. Love them.
Tool, Chevelle, Deftones to name a few just bring out this sense of well being. There’s nothing happening around, I’m just enjoying this incredible creation. My family, friends, hockey, backpacking, and music are the only things that bring this incredible piece of mind to me!
The lyrics are far more deeper and beautiful. Relationships tend to fall apart due to lack of communication. Which comes from anger, resentment, blaming the other and ultimately giving up due to no longer giving effort. Which is sad bc they could've saved it, bc there was really love. "I know the pieces fit cause I watched them fall apart, due to crumble unless we rediscover communication" I fkn worship tool.
Seer - a person endowed with profound moral and spiritual insight or knowledge; a wise person or sage who possesses intuitive powers. Maynard James Keenan.
The human connection is a symbiotic relationship of communication not a straight line, but a circle. The failure is not a disconnection of feeling but speaking the"truth"dwelling in the past and not living in the present.
The essential parts of building a healthy relationship is communication along with intimacy, open mindedness, honesty and trust. Tool seems to explore on these things in many of their songs. I love it. This reality of life and love.
Well said. Um...like...way easier said than done. I definetly have seen , done, the wrong ways. Think I'm bout done with them. Now if only to find her on the same page, book, fucking galaxy!
As a young girl growing up in what seemed like a hopeless situation, trying to navigate the intricacies of life... I latched onto Tool after hearing them on my local rock station. Little did I know that they would be instrumental in my discovery of more than the status quo! They helped open my eyes to a world in which I was not a victim, a world in which I could take control and never settle. I sit here as a 32 year old whom has achieved so much and again, am amazed at how this song can have a new meaning for me now as I attempt to join my being with another. Tool truly transcends time with their words and significance and I look forward to seeing what new truths I discover in their music when I'm nearing the end of my life. :)

Yeah well Undertow is almost 30 years old. I remember Sober being on this channel on tv where you could order a song and wait for them to play it. It was the first time I ever heard it and I was amazed. I think it was the same year that Nirvana came out with Nevermind. It was a really good year for music. The year prior?… Vanilla Ice and MC Hammer.
This song communicates to that part of you that you never notice. The subconscious bit that determines your reactions and decisions. You can actually feel the relationship Maynard is talking about in the music and lyrics without being able to describe your thoughts in any kind of explicit detail
After breaking up with my wife - my partner of over 15 years, shortly after the birth of our first child, I sank into a deep depression that ended up with me in a cell in a hospital. You can over think a million ways why a relationship that seems so good on paper, just becomes so toxic and tormenting. Eventually think 'over analysing' exhausts your entire soul. The reason I adore amazing poetry, or in the form of lyrics like this, is that it puts it into words in a concise summarised way, that I never could find a million words to explain. So by just listening, it makes so much sense, it stops me from having to do the over thinking. It already sums it up perfectly. Every single word of this. Lump in my throat the last time I witnessed this song live in concert. A gift! Thank you!
Jan 2024 I am 60 and saw my 1st TOOL show lat night..WTF. How did I never experience them before now? Some said you don’t find TOOL they find YOU! 🎶🤟🏻 Last night was nothing short of a mind blowing journey. I am on the bus ride.

This song still blows me away. I remember being a young paratrooper buying this album the day it released from the Fayetteville Best Buy and driving around the Ft Bragg, NC area enough to listen to it three times. Love it! Airborne!
"Cold silence has a tendency to atrophy any sense of compassion...between supposed lovers" That's writting lyrics. Period. In case you want to listen a new band, we just released our first EP for free download. It's more rock vibe, but there's a metal vibes hidden All the best! And TOOL forever!
4:35 mark and beyond...I'll never forget hearing this song for the first time and that part of the song just hitting my soul. I replayed that part a few times, had the volume up on my CD player..I was living with my 65 year old aunt at the time and her bedroom was directly above where I was playing this song. I came upstairs a little while later and the first thing she said to me was "whatever you were playing downstairs earlier was absolutely beautiful..what is it?" I told her it was a Tool song and album. She really liked it. Also in my sophomore year of highschool I had a friend that had never really listened to Tool, I gave them my Lateralus cd to borrow and told them to go home and listen to the whole thing They came back to school the next day, looked almost dazed and told me that album was life changing. It truly is.

Cus they suck. Most overrated band ever. Literally a thousand metal/rock bands better than them. Only people that say they are goodi s because you're a sheep. losers.
This used to be constantly on MTV2 in the mornings back then... My routine was to watch the whole thing then I'd be out the door for school.. Along with mudvayne, incubus, alien ant farm, good ole 2001.. pre 9/11 summer.
Remember, I think the channel G2 or MTV2 would make music videos for current popular music but instead they would use current popular video games? I remember seeing one for MCRs I'm not ok, it was hilarious. Wish I remembered the title...
The way I feel when I listen to Tool is beyond understanding. It can’t be explained, there are no words. Same shivers, same goosebumps and it’s been like that for more than 20 years. Everything around me just stops existing when I listen to them. It’s just me, the whole of me, the real me.
Now that's the way you articulate. Talk about communication...you conveyed that exquisitely. I normally give people hell on here for the stupid pretentious garbage they spew. Not you. Good shit. Bravo
@@diogeneslantern18 I'd argue the most pretentious crap is your contrarian approach in what is essentially a tool circlejerk, under a tool song, replying to a tool shill.

One of the most complex peices of modern music. The tempo and pace, the timing changes, how when they happen. Amazing piece of music, hypnotic really.

The feeling I get every time I hear pretty much any TOOL song is undescribable. One of my favorite bands of all time.

It’s nae just for wallowing - it’s for confronting the mess, the complexity, the fuckin’ humanity of it all
Now that's fuckin deep

Little did I know that they would be instrumental in my discovery of more than the status quo! They helped open my eyes to a world in which I was not a victim, a world in which I could take control and never settle. This song still blows me away. I remember being a young paratrooper buying this album the day it released from the Fayetteville Best Buy and driving around the Ft Bragg, NC area enough to listen to it three times. Love it! Airborne!
Thank you for your service.
I remember getting my first military check at Aberdeen proving grounds and buying all the cd’s I wanted.
Thank you
@@CullinsService Thanks to you as well. Yeah, it was like being rich!
@@CullinsService I did exactly the same thing every Saturday on my weekend pass.
"Cold silence has a tendency to atrophy any sense of compassion...between supposed lovers" That's writting lyrics. Period.
In case you want to listen a new band, we just released our first EP for free download. It's more rock vibe, but there's a metal vibes hidden
All the best! And TOOL forever!
Probably one of the best lines ever sung in a metal song
@@rodtaylor5476 Hope with spotify they get more attention

4:35 mark and beyond...I'll never forget hearing this song for the first time and that part of the song just hitting my soul. I replayed that part a few times, had the volume up on my CD player..I was living with my 65 year old aunt at the time and her bedroom was directly above where I was playing this song.
I came upstairs a little while later and the first thing she said to me was "whatever you were playing downstairs earlier was absolutely beautiful..what is it?" I told her it was a Tool song and album. She really liked it. Also in my sophomore year of highschool I had a friend that had never really listened to Tool, I gave them my Lateralus cd to borrow and told them to go home and listen to the whole thing
They came back to school the next day, looked almost dazed and told me that album was life changing. It truly is.
I hope you didn't let her watch any of the videos.
@@glenndowdy4180 no. This was just the audio from the album
My Great Grandma, who was in her 90s, loved when I played Tool for her 😊
Tool is da best 🤘 but you must hear “Whispering Wolf” by SLT 🎧🎸🔥🎶🥁!!!
@@beezybeez7231 That's a awesome recommendation! Just heard the song and it blew my mind. Love that type of music. One Way Trip to the Sun by Ditch and Eclipse by Arenna has a same stoner vibe ✨️
Stop asking who's still listening, we never stop listening.
Never ever ❤
Right on!!! 🤙🏼

Your neighborhood kids are monster demons from a tool video?

I actually laughed. And I'm not in a good mood. For those of us with simple humor. That was actually great

Maybe my favorite part of any song ever.. chills every time

my soul weeps
The breakdown guitar will silence the riots and cure the corona
The Bass is definitely the best part of this song for me though.
Me too
Definitely my favorite part. So perfectly haunting
How TooL is not in the rock and roll hall of fame is totally fucking beyond my comprehension. There is no other band that has their sound. They are unique like no other. Best. Band. Everrrrr...
They can t dig deep. Fab band ❤
How Tool is so adored is totally fuckin beyond my comprehension !
They will be bro trust me and if they are not inducted then we should definitely fucking protest
@@RikusRedBlackfor fucking real.
Cus they suck. Most overrated band ever. Literally a thousand metal/rock bands better than them. Only people that say they are goodi s because you're a sheep. losers.
3:03 Everything in burritos for absolutely no reason
This used to be constantly on MTV2 in the mornings back then... My routine was to watch the whole thing then I'd be out the door for school.. Along with mudvayne, incubus, alien ant farm, good ole 2001.. pre 9/11 summer.
Ahh the good ole days before today's version of society and freedom.
More than two towers Falling fell that day
well now i feel old because I remember when I was 12 and sober came out and then when I was 15 and seen Aenima which was amazing
I remember those days. Don’t forget MTV2 Gorillaz Clint Eastwood, Drowning Pool Bodies (this song was banned from radio AirPlay after 9/11).
Not you. Good shit. Bravo
Thats deep bro.
Same..
If you cant relate your life to TOOL your lying to yourself or have never actually been alive to begin with GET BORN
The most irritating thing about tool fans is thst they write such extraordinarily pretentious shit like this.
@@diogeneslantern18 I'd argue the most pretentious crap is your contrarian approach in what is essentially a tool circlejerk, under a tool song, replying to a tool shill.

Who remembers seeing the debut of this video on MTV back in the summer of 2001? I remember it being a really big deal, as it should have been.
Yes! I was a freshman in hs then and that video and album really introduced me to this band. Good times
years later i still cant make sense of this damn video though
@Akilleus Before Tool uploaded their own video, I remember the video for this that was posted to RUclips had that "MTV Buzz-worthy" logo in the upper corner.
@@DarkenedSilhouette I'm stoned, so this might not make sense lol. I think the two beings in the video are trying to figure out reproduction. By the end, they figure it out, but since humas are kind of garbage, the fire is a representation of us.
I was in middle school and used to stay up watching MTV and the commercials late night for the album were snippets of this video and it would always spook the shit outta me.
This lyrics is about the "you" that thinks of you as yourself and so on. Is not two different persons, the is no duality, in reality all is one unsepared, so I know the pieces fit, one day I will realized this again and will be ready to be born again.
Tool are giving us right now both the memory and the experience!
My dad would always play this song when I was really young, I just found this band again and I love everything about it
I just can't seem to get enough of this music video, this song, or this band. TOOL has made some of the best music ever, and I feel blessed to live in a time where I am able to access such audible excellence.
