  • A full look at the move set for Guild, Striker, Aerial, and Bushido styles + all 3 level of each SA hunter art, then finally thoughts on each style as a choice over the other.
    ***MISSING:
    - You can do a morph to sword from the chop finisher by pressing R
    - You can do a quick transition to the discharge after the AA combo in sword mode
    - Reload in air is fast and convenient (all style, including aerial vault)
    - Bushido evade while sheathed, it's like a draw attack so X for axe, R+X+A for sword
    Happy hunting!

    I'm really happy to see my favorite weapon is freaking awesome in Cross, although I'm also sad that they basically made the Axe mode obsolete, since my favorite part of the SA is the fact that it has two forms

      Seriously, and it was really starting to get decent again. I mean, I definitely appreciate the chopping finisher buff and raising the motion values of axe attacks again, but all of the arts seem to focus specifically on sword mode. Worse yet is that the motion values of sword mode don't seem to have been reduced any, but I'm pretty sure at least one has actually gone up.
      Furthermore I am insanely bothered by the fact that they have continued to utterly invalidate the elemental phial. It's ridiculous that they still haven't figured out how dumb gimmicks like that are just as bad as the power / arc shot divide on bows were - it makes or breaks like half if not more of the weapon's selections. I mean it doesn't even have the utility versus damage benefit that charge blade has to make up for that.

    • @skill392
      @skill392 8 лет назад +5

      ***** Yeah, right? It's like, why even have different phials if Power is the only viable one?

    • @gabrielcabral6142

      +Opheliac Dan the charge blade actually in mhx is pretty much doing damage with the axe so if you watch a video of someone using charge blade, the person is definitely using most of his time in axe mode (like 60% of his time)
      the sns attacks of charge blade were really nerfed so it isnt worthy just doing damage with it like in mh4u
      also, guard point leads to axe mode now, so even if you just want to use guard points you will have to change back to sns after it

      The hack and slash (with finisher) is still easily the highest dps combo in the game and charges your hunter arts like no other.

    I don't believe you mentioned, you can transition straight into sword mode out of the Axe mode chop-combo finisher. It's pretty cool. On top of that, Sword mode's double slash attack transitions smoothly into elemental discharge. It's much faster than if you try to activate Elemental discharge from another move or just standalone. Normally the hunter has to pull the weapon back, then thrust to perform the elemental discharge. If you do the double slash right before it, the hunter will not have to pull the weapon back, instead going straight into the thrust, saving probably a whole second of animation time. I'm sure both of these were the case in 4U, and I don't see why that wouldn't still be in this game.

      + Laggalot101 He also neglected to mention that you can press X during the chop-combo to end it in a much more standard vertical chop, continuing your axe combo without knocking everyone around online using the special finish. While not as flashy or strong, it keeps up the attack on vertical/ moving opponents without disturbing teammates or taking as long to recover.

    • @Nyahahameha
      @Nyahahameha 8 лет назад +2

      +Laggalot101 I was just coming to comment this stuff myself! Thanks for saving me time. ^_^ Although, I'm also pretty sure the sword mode double-hit also can transition into a morph attack, IIRC. I could be wrong, though.
      It'd be nice if he mentioned all this stuff was removed, if it turns out that's the case. :

    2 things:
    1) the double hit combos into elemental discharge very quickly when you hit X+A after it.
    2) Tranc slash is actually a lot better than gaijin makes it out to be. You can turn the attack multiple times during the combo with inputs from the circle pad (you can turn 180 degrees if you need to), so if a monster stays in relatively the same spot, you can turn to hit a weak point, get a flinch and hit with more of the combo. With demon riot active, you can turn the combo another time.

  • @zeruszephuros5419
    @zeruszephuros5419 8 лет назад +3

    ok, as a SA pro, there's TWO BIG things you missed in the video (and as a tip&tricks) :D
    1) when there's RELOAD jump from a cliff/ledge and press X+A to reload (or just R if you're already in axe mode), you will reload faster than manually doing it on the ground, it's just a BIT faster, but really it helps a lot
    2) i have no idea why this move isn't included in the vid and not many people do this combo....
    (sword mode) A then A for the two slash attack and then immediately X+A for the discharge attack
    (meaning in sword mode do >> A >> A >> X+A) this brings you into the discharge attack so MUCH faster than you normally do a simple X+A
    i always do a X+A for discharge finisher attack after the double A slash, i mean like... it's a MUST if you want to use that D: !

    • @gaijinhunter
      @gaijinhunter  8 лет назад +4

    The Switch Axe was the first weapon I got really good with and became my go-to weapon whenever I was getting into hard content and needed an edge. The speed, the power, the versatility of the SA cannot be overstated. It's one of the easiest to learn and definitely rewarding for the player to use. It has very little in the way of defense, which is good because it teaches you to dodge and find openings, and in MH Gens / X it combines very, very well with Aerial. You get only one Art, but it's more like flavoring. The discharge can be done with the jump but it's better to just save it up and use the Trance Slash Art which ends with the explosion attack as long as you have enough charge. The combo attack before the elemental discharge is really satisfying and really feels like you become a juggernaut for just a few moments.

    ok, another BIG thing missed if a player wants to use SA as in Bushido style
    4) (bushido) if your weapon is sheath, when you do the perfect evade then counter as X you will do the axe's finisher move right?
    BUT, if you press R+X+A you'll do the up-down sword attack instead (and you're right in sword mode instead of the axe mode!)
    >> helps alot, for example, you are recovering after you ate a great potion, then white narga attacks you, do perfect evade then press R+X+A for the up-down move counter and you're already in sword mode to do more sword moves/combos/attacks :3 !

  • @ElPsiCongroo

    Hey gaijinhunter, thanks for your videos. I just wanted to mention that in the MHGen Demo, during Trans Slash, you can change the directions pretty easily while you're attacking, so you can keep hitting the monster even if it's moving slightly. Of course it's still bad but it's not super useless, I think.

    • @ThePeoplesMoai
      @ThePeoplesMoai 8 лет назад

      When he said "useless" I don't think he meant to say that it was absolute poo poo, but rather a somewhat sluggish Hunting Art that requires sometime to unleash it's maximmum damage output.
      In my opinion, Demon Riot + Trance Slash = Ultimate Hunting Art, considering the range of the explosion, hitting EVERYTHING in 360º degrees instantly... there is no escape, nor monster or hunter are safe xD

    Not sure if this is common knowledge, but even though you lose the double chop in Sword mode in Striker style, you can just hit A once, and immediately go into the elemental discharge, compared to having to do the double chop into the elemental discharge.
    Just a minor little thing, if people like using the demon sword mode into elemental discharge, striker style makes it a bit faster.

  • @MightyRathalos90
    @MightyRathalos90 8 лет назад

    you might anna add that you can go to sword from the chop combo u can pres R more than once to go into sword as well and also in sword mode, when you do the double a attack and go to x+a before the second swing is done you can directly go to the elemental discharge and the character skips the animation where u draw back the sword to thrust (unless they took that out in MHX)

    but sadly there is one thing i dont like,
    if u want to use an moving background while the game record is playing.
    after the motion finished it restarts and thats realy annoying, i would be great if u could make it so, that the start and the end fuse into each other, so that it looks like it would never end. ^^

    With the switch axe you can do the chop finisher with R. but if you press R again it will switch into sword mode as a retreating slash (slash before the double slash) where you can perform an elemental discharge. "at least in MH4U and probably guild style."

    I'm not sure this has been mentioned or not but you can morph after a Bushido evade attack. From sword mode you do the 2 hit combo then press R for a third downwards morphed axe strike. You can also morph after the axe mode Bushido evade attack with R.

  • @aninymouse1651

    One last thing you missed: after the chop combo in axe mode, if you stop pressing A and press X once, you'll go straight to the downward chop. I doubt Striker can do this, but the other modes probably have this, I'd wager. It was in 4U.

    I don't like how you have a weapon that's called Switch Axe that has 2 modes, but one mode is so much better that it invalidates the other one. What's the point? I feel like the Charge Blade is what the Switch Axe originally intended to be but they focused too much on Sword mode. They could just called it Energy Sword or something at this point..

    • @Synthwave89

      I agree. When my bro told me he only uses sword mode since axe mode is useless in comparison to the former, I thought to myself "what's the point of axe mode then". I main CB so it didn't make sense to me until I saw this video and I tried SA. This weapon looks really fun though.

      +Mario Paul it might be fun yes, I used to be SA main back in Tri myself but now I hate the thought of only using half a weapon because I know it could have been so much better. they could have created cool hunter arts for the Axe Mode but instead soley focused even more on the sword

      The axe allows you to move slightly faster and I feel like it has a liiittle more reach. The chop combo thing is also insanely good (I don't think he mentioned, but you seem to have a slightly faster morph coming out of the spinning move, and allows you to go straight into the basic sword x combo). Honestly though, either weapon would be acceptable separate from the other.

    • @ProtoTypeFM
      @ProtoTypeFM 7 лет назад +2

      Damage-wise it's objectively leagues better than the axe-mode. Demon-Riot/Energy Charge murdered the axe-mode completely. In MH4U it was at least a bit useful to whip out some pretty good element/status with the stamina-chops,and the axe-finisher was rad, but in Gen it's not even worth talking about. It's kinda funny, the Switch Axe is named Switch Axe but no one cares for the Axe-part, and the Charge Blade is called Charge Blade even if the blade is only useful for phials since the Superburst is gone from the swordmode, and the Axe is where it's all at.

    Very nice tutorial :D. But there are two things that bother me a bit. In guild style in Axemode after you do the roundhouse R attack, can you not press R again to switch into Swordmode? And in Swordmode, after you do the double A swipe attack and then do the discharge, is it not coming out much faster than when you normaly do it? I watched again your MH4U tutorial on SA and you coverd those two things

    So the Najarala was kicking my ass with my gunlance. After watching this tutorial I decided to give Aerial Switch Axe a go... HOLY SHIT DOES IT KICK ASS! that move the Najarala does to trap people between it was useless against me because I kept jumping out of the way! I think I mounted it like 6 times! I've just found a new favorite style.

    I fell in love with aerial switch axe when I tried it in the demo. Switch axe was my main in 4U but when I saw how "meh" people were about the Trance Slash art, I started to get really worried if I should really consider using it. Then Demon Riot was revealed and I started to become a bit more interested. But it was only when I played the demo and got to actually try it for myself that I started to like switch axe again. And when I tried aerial style, I knew I had found my main right then and there. Once I started using it in the game I never looked back. I use a number of other weapons and styles, but aerial switch axe is generally my go-to setup. Lately I've also been using adept switch axe a lot and I love how aggressive I can be with this style. Overall, switch axe may very well be my main for life. My only complaint is that the changes to the weapon for Gen made the weapon too focused on sword mode and axe mode is just non-existent, which makes me sad because I know from experience that axe mode is a lot of fun. So I hope that in the next Monster Hunter game they will add in a few buffs for the axe mode.

    Honestly, what I enjoy about the Switch-Axe is the versatility of being able to use both modes and the fun of choosing which mode is right for the situation. Aside from Bushido mode's axe attack, it seems like Generations really tipped the scales too much towards sword mode, especially with the Energy Charge hunting art.

      +Jose Tomas Di Paola Axe mode still has the range though for chopping those tall/airborne monsters tails off, or even knocking down a flying monster that's trying to flee. Sword mode has nothing on that.

    You always say watch out with the attacks that can knock allies into the air but I often use them, to everyone's surprise but delight as well, to hit them into the air right next to the monster when they're no ledges or anything around to jump off of. I know not everyone likes that but so far no one has complained about me doing it.

    Very nice tutorial! A bit disappointed you didn't mention the status phials (not hard to understand at all, but it's still a thing), but otherwise neat. I found it really cool that you showed all styles a bit, as well.
    And since SA seems to be beyond broken in Guild/Striker style, this might be the first time I deliberately use broken tactics - before, I always avoided them to have more fun hunting, but this seems too awesome to pass up. Of course, all depends on Capcom, but I'll just wait.
    Also, I dunno if you've already prepared specific weapons or anything, but I'd love to see you cover Bow next. It's the weapon that got me into MH3U, and despite the online bullying against non-Regios bow users, I kept coming back to it, so I really wanna see just what this thing is capable of, especially since the selection of coatings seems to have expanded quite a bit!

      +Kaze Memaryu Bow is my main weapon. Sadly there was definitely a lot of elitism among the MH4U community in regards to Bows. There are a lot of good ones, and a lot of cool niche things you can do, etc., but people all want to be armchair critics and discourage creativity.
      There's a new arrow type in MHX, called Heavy arrows. From my understanding, it is just one large, heavy arrow that you fire, but it does much more damage than all the others per hit. For instance, a Heavy 1 shot would have the same motion value as a Pierce 5 shot! At least, if I understand what I've seen from the Japanese wikis to be true. The downside is that Heavy arrows have a short range, like Spread, so they are not easy to use for novices.

      +adam paolucci Ugh I'm not looking forward to the generations elitists after 4 (most of which had never played monster hunter prior!) Unfortunately I see generations being worse with the new styles. "U shuld be using adept for bow its the only gud style" It was bad enough where some would bash you just for honing life into your weapon. Hell they have the audacity to call some skills nooby! I had someone bitching at me because I like minds eye/steady hand because it stops you from bouncing. only to be told "you shouldnt hit those areas anyway" damn I hate elitists...

      Kaze Memaryu This game is designed to be played however you want. If you like Bushido/adept, strike, guild or arial then go for it! Don't let other players tell you what you can and can't use because that defeats the point of the game.

    So I've been playing the demo and I find that I like trusty ol' guild style the most. You can really abuse the twirl chop and you can do the "demon riot" and "trans slash" combo fairly consistently. It's good stuff. I was expecting to like adept mode the most, but having the twirl chop used only after the evade really limited my damage output. I will experiment more, but I thought I would put my own experience out there as an axe lover in a sword-mode world.

    Losing the upward slash for the Sword Mode for Bushido Style is a bit off...
    But the Perfect Evade means that I could dodge any attacks. Hunting a Tigrex, Narga, & Tama with BS is fun.
    Demon Sword is a bit hefty to use in AS & BS since there's no Energy Charge. Translash is easy to use for Aerial SA.

    One combo you didn't cover in your video tutorial, not even in your "missing" comment below - and it is a gamechanger:
    In Striker's sword mode you can immediately use X+A after the A side slash.
    So with Striker, you can spam the crap out of the elemental discharge, faster and more frequently than with any other style.
    Striker became SO MUCH FUN after I discovered that shortcut :D

    Oh yeah. The Switch Axe is, so far, my favorite weapon in MH4U so far. Very powerful and could take down most monsters faster then most weapons. I am still learning all the combos (since learning about the combos and doing them are VERY different), but I will say I am liking how smooth most of the attacks on the Switch Axe were. And I am glad that in MHX it is still doing good. Guild is like the normal, and some of the moves being removed in Striker, Aerial, and Bushido don't seem to be THAT much of a lost. Aerial seems really good, and Bushido seems alright. The arts, they seem alright. Demon Sword is of course going to be the most useful, especially if it is fully charged. And I don't know, maybe the Tran-Slash can be useful. I can see it used as a power move on stunned or trapped monsters. Maybe I can see potential, maybe I like to use useless moves and make them useful, maybe I'm just weird, I dunno. But again, great video Gaijin. Keep up the good work.
