    I live in South Florida. I grew a pidgeon Pea in a pot and when it was about a foot and a half foot tall. I transplanted it into my garden. The soil was pretty sandy as is usual here. I used a trick that my grandmother taught me from her garden in the Caribbean. Whenever I plant a tree I use some organic fish fertilizer. I dilute it in a half gallon old milk bottle, I tbs then fill with water. Dig your hole and pour this solution into it, then stick the plant in and fill with dirt. Water. Daily until establishes and just ignore it.. I planted it in October and by the end of January it was 8feet tall and in full bloom .. I’ve been harvesting since mid February and usually make rice and peas or put them in to a soup with, kale, which I grew in dappled shade of the pigeon pea along with any other greens that I have on hand. Early April now and I’ve let them dry and I’m going to harvest the rest. Dry, you can store them just as any other bean. All you have to do is soak them overnight and they plump up.Then you can steam them for 15 minutes and use them just as you would the green ones, but they are more flavorful

      I want to say that I could have harvested a bit sooner this past year than I actually did. So I would say you probably can get a harvest before Christmas if you get them in the ground soon.

    How old are those trees? Good on you for showing the same plant planted in different locations in your yard. Thank you!

      The trees were just short of one year old. My experience so far is that they die after a freeze but easily grow quick enough to provide a crop within one growing season. This year we did not get a hard freeze so all the pigeon pea trees are still alive and seem to be leaving out again. It will be interesting to see how they grow if they do in fact come back to full growth. You can expect to see another video on them as they mature or die off.

    Try covering the pigeon peas tree with a cheap canvas cloth at home depot or walmart

      We did not get a freeze last year so I am not sure that it would help. Also I am trying real hard to grow in such a manner that natural weather patterns will not effect my food forest areas or require extensive mitigation efforts during the natural weather patterns here. Hopefully once the fruit trees grow to full maturity they will help to protect the smaller plants during cold weather as well as from the heat in the summer.

    Were both trees getting full sunlight?

    • @JimBobsGarden
      @JimBobsGarden  4 года назад +2

      There were actually 3 trees and all if you drew a line with the three of them it would be very close to North-South, so essentially they got the same amount of sun. The soil is different in all three spots but the worst soil in my opinion produced the middle height tree. This year all the trees seem to be about the same size and production so it may have just been a problem with that particular tree. Not really sure why they were so different. To answer your question though they get about 3/4 day sun from late morning to nearly sunset in that position.

    Do they grow in California?

      I don't see why they wouldn't, they did die off after the freeze last year but we have not had a freeze this year and the same trees are still green and growing. So even if your area gets a freeze they should grow up until it freezes. I am sure if you look around you can find some seed for sale

      Daniel Chavez yes they do. My uncle in LA had one.

      @Daniel Chavez just cover the pigeon pea tree with a cheap canvas cloth that you can buy at home depot, walmart, amazon, Ebay and other stores that sell canvas cloth.

    Did they make it through the winter?

      @JimBobsGarden  4 года назад +2

      Sorta, we did not get a freeze so they didn't die immediately but they haven't done great either. I intend to do a video here shortly to show how things went.

      I just posted a video showing how the pigeon peas look so far this year. I would strongly recommend saving a few peas for replanting the next year. Even without a freeze they did not do nearly as well as they did last year so I think that the best practice would be treating them as an annual plant.

      @@vonnierichardson7861 That is good information. I figure that it must be an annual and I will be treating it as one in the future. Thanks for the input though I really do appreciate it.
