    Specialists are still important. If it weren't for Andy Hug's karate background, who knows how much longer it would've taken for his axe kicks and spin kicks to become more popular in kickboxing/MMA. Rule limitations can sometimes force fighters to be creative in ways that MMA doesn't, because there are so many different ways to win an MMA fight that it's hard to control all the variables. So MMA needs to learn from great fighters who specialize in only one discipline like boxing, any flavor of wrestling, judo, any flavor of kickboxing, BJJ, and full contact forms of karate and TKD. Great specialists add to the overall wealth of martial arts knowledge and improve MMA even if they never step into the cage.

    • @dramaticreaper
      @dramaticreaper 4 года назад +3

      Ikr that's what makes watching fights so entertaining. I will never forget when I learned that "MMA" is actually a style on it's own and every mma fighter fought the same way. Fights are more entertaining when high level guys specialise in one art

      @@dramaticreaper MMA is not truly a style and not every MMA fighter fights the same way. For example, Ronda Rousey ruled MMA for years and she wasn't much more than a judoka with naturally heavy hands.
      Mirko turned many of his MMA matches into K-1 matches. Sakaraba and Minowa's MMA matches often looked like something out of a Fujiwara Gumi pro wrestling match etc etc.

    • @dramaticreaper
      @dramaticreaper 4 года назад +1

      @@TheAGNOSTIC_who_YT_CENSORS nah man i was talking about how it used to be about diversity and basically in today's time "MMA" doesn't really even mean mixed martial arts anymore and is more of a style if it's own and all MMA fighters fights just about the same way

    • @TheAGNOSTIC_who_YT_CENSORS
      @TheAGNOSTIC_who_YT_CENSORS 4 года назад +1

      @@dramaticreaper Yes, and I was disagreeing with all of that for reasons previously stated. I totally disagree with your implied claim that Marcus Aurelio fights anything like Quinton Jackson.
      What COULD be said is that MMA is a style modifier. For example; Lyota Machida's MMA karate is different from a full contact karate competition, Yair Rodriguez's MMA taekwondo is different from a taekwondo competition, Hidehiko Yoshida's MMA judo is different from a judo competition, Miriam Nakamoto's MMA Muay Thai is different from a Muay Thai match, Marcus Aurelio's MMA capoeira is different from a capoeira demonstration, Connor McGregor's MMA boxing is VERY different from a boxing match, Royce Gracie's MMA BJJ is different from a BJJ competition, Dan Severn's MMA wrestling is different from a wrestling match etc.
      Yes, there are certainly such things as generalists in MMA and at the end of the day, there are only so many ways to strike, choke, twist or slam a noncompliant opponent (and we're still discovering/rediscovering new ones) but there is no empty hand combat sport today more versatile than MMA. In that sense, MMA is not in the same category as boxing or BJJ. It's not really a style of fighting but perhaps it could be said it's a style of training.

    As a practitioner of ITF TKD for 27 years, I have to say that tkd guy's punching technique is not a good representation of how we utilize our hands. His kicks were top notch and there's definitely the more aggressive brawler mentality I'm used to, but he's holding his hands like a WTF guy and swinging with no control. Despite that, I am impressed with how he uses his awesome kicks to recover when his sloppy punches miss. I will admit this definitely looks like a mismatch, though. As much as it pains me to say it, I think a bigger, more seasoned Muay Thai fighter might have beat him.

    • @xyaeiounn

      Also TKD guy here, a Thai-boxer with stronger basics might have destroyed his kicking leg or attacked his base leg and floored him. I've seen Kyokushin beginners flatten TKD champions with basic moves outside the ITF/WTF skillset.

      Am also an ITF practitioner for over 10 years and have been practising muay thai for the past 3 years. Must say the ITF guy had some amazing footworks there but his hands were always down and his punches were really bad. Any seasoned Muay Thai practitioner would have knocked him down when he opened his arms. He got lucky that his Muay Thai opponent was an amateur.

    • @pattyorigami
      @pattyorigami 4 года назад

      @@ahliaw I concur. The way his hands were down really reminds me of wtf, which makes me wonder if his style was some kind of bastardized hybrid of ITF and WTF. What are your thoughts on that, based on your experience?

      @@xyaeiounn I agree with your assesment of this particular fighter. Master Choi Hong Hi's style of TKD utilizes principles from karate, judo, jiu-jitsu, muay thai, and other arts that influenced its evolution from taekkyon. The way this guy moved, it's obvious he does not have that background. It would be interesting to see a match with a true chin mu kwan practitioner against a seasoned muay thai practitioner.

      @@pattyorigami If he had a background in WTF, he would also be throwing some of those super high kicks in the air for instant knockout. His kicks were real ITF kicks but those hands...am amazed by the fact that he just didn't care. In tournaments, only straight punches. No hooks or uppercuts. But there in the video the ITF guy just swang his arms around without any control, which was very unusual in ITF. Can't tell why such bad hand techniques but he sure needs good, intensive training before people throw punches in his face, esp when he bears the name of ITF 😥

    To explain the "switch kick", you generally want to throw roundhouse kicks from the rear leg to have decent power. A roundhouse kick from the front leg is just a flick of your knee, which is a bit more common in point sparring styles like WTF TKD. In kickboxing / muay thai they want to do heavy "baseball bat" style roundhouse kicks, which means it's necessary to step or switch if you want to use your lead leg. You don't need to switch if you're doing something like a defensive teep.

      @@andrewk.5575 well, I hope I can explain it well, muay thai can do most of the kicks of the other martial arts mentioned, but normally it does not use them in addition each art uses different forms of kicking so to speak, savate, karate and taekwondo (the descendants of kungfu xD) mainly use a way where leg flexion and extension is used in a remarkable way, in muay thai also but not so much and that system used by other martial arts helps them with certain feints or combinations, capoeira uses its arms to project his kick (like some taekwondo kicks and most of the kungfu swivel), but the capoeira specializes in turns, kicking, surprise attacks and good for those reasons I put them up. As for boxing the savate and karate are fine but I said style to kick. and as for the kungfu there is everything but I don't know what styles they use than what they do is that they use good setbacks and kicks both rotating and front and have a lot of floor but as I said divided into many styles so I did not include it.

    2:41 everything after this exchange, because of that final kick, was just ego getting battered. The smaller man was beaten right there and after that persisted because people were watching. I would have called it right there. Ego, especially in front of peers, can drive a man to snap city and even permanent residency in Injury valley.
    The ego will shred the body to preserve itself.

    ITF TKD is the combat version of TKD a good ITF TKD practitioner would shit on Muay Thai practitioner the variation in attack is far superior, especially if the TKD practitioner mixes with some boxing, WTF doesn't attack the head with fists in ITF every attack thinkable is permitted their tournaments are full contact no nonsense events I'd rate it above full contact karate as well.

      @algomez8563 4 года назад

      @Spinning Back-Kick Well my english is not that good. Let me try again. Muay Thai guys generally think they are the best striking art. Several times to prove their superiority they set up a challenge match between a challenger, usually, but not always, a black belt or advanced student in a another striking art (tae kwon do, kung fu etc) against one of their relatively new students, for example a "less than one year" practitioner. To show that their beginners are better than the advanced students of other styles.

    • @algomez8563
      @algomez8563 4 года назад

      Being sincere until the 2000s Muay Thai was pretty much the best striking art because of their training nowdays other striking arts have step up or improved their game to be competitive against Muay Thai.

    I wonder if legs kicks weren't aloud. Would be a strange rule but the Muay Thai fighter not throwing any seemed odd. Still though, think the TKD fighter could be great if he learned a little boxing. Tightening up the form on his punches would do wonders, he leaves himself way too open. Though hey, it got the job done.

Anyone who has ever done muay Thai knows you never train in a 'facility like this (it even has mirrors!) So the TKD guys put on thai shorts and elected one of the TKD kids to spar hence the external cup the mauy thai guy is wearing!! Long story made short this is skilled tae Kwon Do guy against an unskilled Tae Kwon do guy. EVERYONE in the gym is TKD simply wearing muay thai shorts. This was an elaborate hoax to boost membership at the TKD class. Muay Thai will almost always win in a match of skill and grit BUT tae kwon do has some amazing kicks that really do work!!
