Intel N100 is what all these SSD NAS prebuilt's are running. Not enough lanes and it's a cheap chip. Can build an all-SSD NAS (without the SSDs) for nearly half the cost.

The system is very expensive for the n100, the only advantage is the many ssd slots, of which you have no real advantage in terms of speed if you are limited to a single 2.5gb port. I see, many people certainly don't have the network infrastructure to make use of several 2.5gb or even 10gb ports, but then I dont see a reason for an ssd-only nas anyways I'd rather buy a standard mini pc with n100 cpu, also one 2.5gb port and only one or two ssd slots for half the price. (Apart from the fact that you can get "firewall pc's" from china for 250-350€ with the n100 which are equipped with 4-8 2.5gb ports, and several ssd slots. Admittedly, the delivery times for these things are rarely less than 1 month but still..) love your vids tho'
I think it's a great way to keep things low power. That's my 2024 goal, is to go low power for all my home lab services. But, point taken about less expensive devices with more NICs.

That platform has only a single RAM channel, and very few PCIe lanes, so I am thinking these 4xNVMe devices are only Gen 3 x 1 lane each, so throughput will not be that impressive. Hence the limited amount of network bandwidth supplied. So, at the price, thanks, but no.

At the beginning of the video, you are saying that you would never show us something that you don't like. I think that you SHOULD show products and software that you don't like and tell us why you don't like them. That would help us when we have to choose a product and we find that product that you didn't like and on which you didn't make a video. Also, that would increase the credibility of the review/show-and-tell of product that you do like. Maybe just make it obvious in the title of the video... Thank you for all the time you put producing those videos. They are great.
I hadn’t thought of it that way. I wanted to do it the way I am because I want any manufacturer using open source to be encouraged to continue, so didn’t want to put them down in a public way, but give them a chance to fix issues if they can. But, I see your point. I will rewrite my terms going forward, so they understand that if I don’t like it I’ll publish the review and return the item so they can improve, with an open invitation to re-review it after any updates.
It's essentially a mini-pc NAS. I like it, it's pretty great, and so small. I'm working on a separate low power mini-pc now, and it's actually larger than this little box that's acting as a NAS.
This is exactly what it is - You can get an N100 with 2x2.5Gbe (Intel), 2 NVMe slots and 2.5" bay for £85 of AliExpress... I got 3 of them to build a Ceph cluster (still WIP). I understand something "unique" might have less demand, and there is additional cost here is for NVMe slots, but that does no constitute 350% price increase.. and to add salt to the wound, it seems to have a Realtek NIC.
Static charge drives are not reliable for long term storage, imo. Performance vs reliability payoff is suspect. And the presenter glides right over the fact he'd be backing up this nas for sure. The cost per storage volume is an obvious red-flag as well, eco-benefit be damned.
I did mention that you should have a backup, didn't mean to breeze over it. You should always have redundancy. SSD NAS or not. Yes SSD does cost more, but so did Spinning drives when they were first available, as they do for larger and larger volumes. For me, the cost savings on power will be much larger than the cost to both get the device, and even update the storage down the road, but that may not be true for everyone depending on where you're starting, and what your goals are.
Cool device. I've made a much smaller NAS out of a Beelink Mini PC using the included NVME drive and a 2.5" SSD. This looks like a much cleaner solution at a price.

On top of the expensiveness that other commenters are pointing out, ZFS (which would ostensibly be the goal of any type of NAS whether z1 z2 or z3) would wear out the drives faster. Even ZFS mirror would wear out an NVMe far faster than it would a traditional 3.5. This is on top of needing essentially 1GB RAM per 1TB storage. The N100 doesnt have enough PCI lanes to saturate Gen 4 NVMe lanes and isnt powerful enough to manage a SAS even had you the option to do as such. All of that is before the fact that I mention that you have to install the OS on one of the 4 drives that you put in (you do this at 11:25) which means that you dont have 4 drives at your disposal, you have 3. I fail to see the thought that went into designing this product besides just tossing 4 NVMe slots on a N100 chipset.
If you use an OS that can boot from a USB thumb drive, you'd have all 4 slots available. I'm a little surprised that he used up an SSD when openmediavault can run from a USB stick.
You are all correct. I just wanted to show what it can do. This setup was taken down after the video was completed. It's just to show that it can run OMV, TrueNAS, or any other NAS. ZFS is hard on SSDs for sure, and there are other options in linux as well.

Well done! Appreciate the power readings. For reference, my old Synology DS1815+ with 5 HDDs uses ~27W at idle and ~62W when active. The 6W idle would be a nice savings, so I'm considering it.🤔
If you are replacing your old hardware its one thing... but don't upgrade to get lower power usage alone. It will take years to get to the payback period.
I don't think it would fit corporate needs alone, but maybe a rack of them with 4 - 4TB drives each. But I definitely think it could do some great stuff in small business space.

I'm sorry you don't like the hardware, nor the deal I make with those who request my time to make a review video of their products, but it really is my time. Should I get paid for that? It takes no less than 20 hours to make 1 video and more often than not, it takes even more time than that. I spend money on resources, and contribute back to open source constantly. My integrity sits with the dozens of review requests I get and turn down every month, or never publish because the system and / or hardware is simply terrible, not open source, or not worthwhile. Do you go to your work, and tell your boss, "my integrity says I should do all my work for free this week." ? That's essentially what you're saying when you make a statement like you just did. The people who make reviews on yourtube, take the time to explain what they find, how they found it, and why they find a product compelling, or terrible, or whatever else they find about it; and they have to feed themselves, their families, and pay bills just like everyone else in the world. I'm baffled by the people who come to a site to watch a free video, and then don't want to see ads, or hear about promotions, or see merchandise from the creator, or have them make any money for their time and effort. I truly hope you'll stick around, watch my other videos, and know that I cover the things I find interesting and useful, and my goal as always, is to help anyone who is heading in the same direction as me. The best thing about all review videos, is you don't have to buy any of it to find out you wouldn't like it.

I hate metal on electronics which require wireless connectivity, because it destroys the reception. Just make the damn thing plastic, and let me save a few pennies. I don't think that naked beer can aesthetic is attractive, anyways. With plastic, I can at least have some choice in getting the color I want. A mini PC is never going to be a premium product. Let's face it, it's a cell phone in a box that doesn't run on batteries or fit into your pocket. It ain't nothin special. Quit tryna be fancy.
I get your point, but it's really a nice build quality. The antenna thing is not an issue, Mac has been dealing with it long enough that it's easy to overcome. As for the cell phone part...it's funny, but seriously these do something a bit different.

Some extra capacity for a small OS drive would be nice.
You could run TrueNAS off a USB I suppose. But yes, something for a tiny 128 G drive for OS would be a nice option.
