As a black kid who always felt like an outlier around his own people and like some strange token around other people, who was also a little nerdy and into things black people weren’t supposed to be into (like Naruto and Dragonball z before black people embraced it and made it cool), I feel like I’m who Donald Glover makes music for. I never felt like I truly related to an artist until him.
There was a time when I fell out of love with hip-hop for the same reason. The gangster rappers from the coasts and the ATLien's wearing grills weren't making music for me. It took "weird" rappers like Childish Gambino, Tyler the creator and Tech N9ne to get me back into it.

@@jameslight4391 before black people widely accepted anime in the main stream American culture, it was looked at as nerdy and weird and now it is cool and the norm. That is absolutely the case, I watched it happen in real time.

Why are they using the term "hip hop culture" when he clearly is talking about Black American culture? BET aren't just hip hop awards, and Glover emphasized that it's the BLACK Eterntainment Awards.
They talk about it almost 5 minutes in. He is specifically talking about rap. I totally disagree with him but he is explaining himself well. He isn't saying he isn't apart of black culture though.

He's just never been SOLO on rap. Let's stop this silliness. He's different culturally, but he is an emcee for sure, and emceeing is one of the five elements of hip-hop culture.
I get why someone would say he isn't, but personally I'd only go as far as saying he's a non-traditional hip hop artist. The vibe I get from him is still very stereotypical "improv comedy guy" over anything else. If you're familiar with that world, UCB and all that, he's very obviously more of that than a traditional hip hop artist. Of course he loves hip hop and has his own personal connection to it and contributes to it in his own way. To me, that's enough to call him hip hop, just in a non-traditional way. Even though I think he's still a corny UCB comedy guy at his core.

Elliot is right. Y’all need to stop shooting this whole “New York bias” comment lightly. Understanding the foundation, showing respect to the communities that birthed it, building your pen game to be dynamic and interesting (if emceeing is your chosen point of participation), and trying to have an authentic, bold voice makes you a part of the culture.

Before i watch the whole video, im a say this. Donald Glover is the Sammy Davis Jr. of the hip hop culture. He does it all from all angles. Hip Hop doesn't just have to be just rap songs for it to be hip hop culture. Even Sticky Fingers even wrote plays, Outkast put ballots dancers to work.
