I listened to you on a pair of Samson headphones, but while I didn’t notice the room noise. I did notice a vast jump in clarity. I’ve been using Sennheisers since 1981.
I've had the smaller Wireless sets before but always come back to my trusty Rode Filmmaker Kit. It's built to last, has a great sound, And takes AA batteries.
Hey Max: Ive got one on back order. As you mentioned it is a little hotter signal wise. I noticed your "S's' were real pronounced with the XS, but a good work around for that is to put the mike facing sideway or even down. With an omni field pickup it still does a great job. Im planning to use this in XLR to use on my boom pole, so i can lose the cord.
Wow Max for the win. I was just looking at wireless Lav systems and saw Adorama posted this yesterday and now Today you provide an even better review. I was actually looking at getting the much more expensive Sony or Sennheiser system but now this really has peaked my interest and i may buy this instead. Can’t wait to “hear” more videos from you about this lol
As far as sounds quality the AVX will be the same since it used the same lav mic. That also uses WiFi but a differ frequency and have sealable battery packs and more options to change. I’ve only used the AVX once and briefly (that was someone else’s) but maybe I’ll need to get a set to do a detailed comparison.
i want one, but i/m just a hobbyist so i'll give it few months to think if i really need it. Sennheiser made a really nice product, just like what they did with the lavelier AVX, but this time even smaller and less expensive. They will sell like pancakes. Greetings from colombia great video.
It would have been nice if you showed the receiver mounted on the camera’s hot shoe and some close ups of the product (watching this video on a phone doesn’t help lol)
I did want to but this video was already bound to be posted later than I usually do (if you post too late then some video just die out) but I definitely will in the review :)
I wanted to buy sennheiser set G4, but it was quite a expensive for entry level film maker, so i bought zoom lp-1 and i did sync in post in finalcut, but this one is gamechanger for me. I will buy at least one!
I have been looking for a wireless setup for going around to tables during weddings and getting quick interviews with guests. Now there is finally a solution. The plug in xlr for a handheld mic and the little receiver for on the camera will be perfect. Before, you had cheap mics that had a receiver that could be plugged into a camera but they could cut out at any time even a few feet away. ( I tried a few and they were just not good enough, the audio was fine, but if they held it wrong it would cut out) And the quality wireless mics don't have receivers that can be plugged into a camera. Just wish I could get a combo that came with the lav and the xlr transmitter. Sucks to not get that lav for an extra $50 but it probably makes more sense to just get the xlr transmitter and pick up an xlr lav for it.
This is actually a product that I may pick up. I picked up my first lav mic this year with the Zoom F1 recorder, but syncing the audio can be a hassle and time consuming in post, plus I can’t monitor my subject with it while recording. Been wanting to explore wireless lavs for a minute...
This thing is impressive! Hoping it lives up to expectation, I turned them on at a shoot yesterday and got the worst buzzing noise it was picking up, turning it off an on again helped but I'm interested as to why. Guess this is my first go at a wireless lav system so will see how it shapes up in the coming weeks!
Hi, very interesting system. I wonder if the the receiver works with a headphone? I could like to use it for people who has problem hearing in conferences. So that the orator may use the sender and someone on the public may use the receiver connected to a headphone, so that they can hear better. Or do you recommend another products for it? Thanks for your answer.
I think the Sennheiser system is great! I may very well add a set to my kit depending on how I feel after the inevitable sleuth of upcoming reviews. The small size is just fantastic for when you need to go overseas and have to cram everything into a backpack camera bag to avoid checking your expensive gear in. I don't see it as a replacement for my RODE system, but certainly a very, very good potential alternative for specific scenarios and for mirrorless cameras it looks like a perfect match. However, I think RODE have got a couple of things right over Sennheiser. One of those is the battery. Batteries that you can buy in any supermarket, convenience store, petrol (gasoline) station is probably better. This will vary from person to person and their needs of course, so your opinion will likely be of varying degrees and even I will likely view it differently according to the particular shoot circumstances. The second thing that RODE have gotten right is how they've named their kits - as silly as that may sound. I have watched quite a few introductory videos on Sennheiser's new product and quickly got confused as to what exactly is available in kit form. Easy enough if you are buying from a bricks and mortar store perhaps, but online it gets tedious sorting through which is which. Of course, I think we'd all agree that the variety in the lineup is excellent. I said a 'couple of things' but one more thing I think could be better improved immediately is the XLR to camera receiver. Sticking out as it does and being plastic means it is potentially easily breakable and prone to accidents. A short XLR cable to allow adjustment would fix this so not a big deal, but it would have been nice to see a hinged/flexible version as in the AVX range. A good product and I sincerely hope the reviews and feedback from actual users continues to excite.
Finally my confusion has been cleared up and I take back somewhat what I said about the naming of the products. Cinema 5D have listed up the 4 kits available. Sennheiser's own videos introducing the system (not the PVs) was confusing. Please note, this is not a criticism of Max Yurev's video. This is from Cinema 5D's site (link to their article also is included): All parts of the new Sennheiser XSW-D system can either be purchased individualy or as a sets. Sennheiser offers following sets: * XSW-D Portable Lavalier Setincludes the ME 2-II clip-on microphone, transmitter and receiver (both with 3.5 mm [1/8”] mini-jacks), belt clip, cold-shoe mount, coiled cable (3.5 mm [1/8”] mini-jack) and charging cable (USB-A to USB-C). * XSW-D Portable Interview Setincludes a transmitter that plugs onto a dynamic handheld microphone (via XLR-3F connector), a receiver with 3.5 mm (1/8”) mini-jack, belt clip, cold-shoe mount, coiled cable (3.5 mm [1/8”] mini-jack) and charging cable (USB-A to USB-C). * XSW-D Portable ENG Set includes the ME 2-II clip-on microphone, two transmitter types (XLR-3F for dynamic handheld microphones and 3.5 mm [1/8”] mini-jack for clip-on mics), a receiver with 3.5 mm (1/8”) mini-jack, belt clip, cold-shoe mount, coiled cable (3.5 mm [1/8”] mini-jack) and charging cable (USB-A to USB-C). *XSW-D Portable Base Set includes a transmitter and a receiver (both with 3.5 mm [1/8”] mini-jacks), belt clip, cold-shoe mount, coiled cable (3.5 mm [1/8”] mini-jack) and charging cable (USB-A to USB-C). www.cinema5d.com/sennheiser-xs-wireless-digital-simply-wireless-audio-cable/
I found the Sennheiser was picking up more room reflections. But the sound quality itself was great. Not too different to the Rode. Thanks for bringing this piece to my/our knowledge, Max. 🙂
Thanks for watching! I’ll add our room ha a lot of noise from the central air that we can’t shut off so almost all of our videos we denoise. For the full comparison we’ll do another test in a quiet room.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but with the XLR version we just clip it on the bottom of a mic ?! That’s awesome :) and then I can plug the receiver straight to the mini xlr Of my blackmagic !
I will probably make a switch to these as well, but the mics need to take it down a notch. Yes they were louder, but on your demo and on another demo I just watched, I could hear distortion on my Yamaha HS8's.
Looks good. However the small size is negated should you have to charge it with a large USB power pack. This will happen a lot more frequently than you think.
Nice, I already have the Rode and it isn't worth the upgrade for your average RUclipsr (there are other missing toys that are higher on the list). Maybe if you are pro it is worth it but I wouldn't know.
Hey Max from my understanding you can mitch and match all of the different receivers and transmitters together if so that makes this a incredible useful feature on this system. Is that correct?
this is wah we've been waiting for! I still think the prices can go wayyyy lower on these wireless systems. I understand they used to cost even more back back back in the days (4 years ago lol) but I definitely thunk the technology is catching up. I definitely see rode dropping their price on theirs to 300usd
The sennheiser sounds so clear I was like wow rewind play again . Sounded like a jumper was on the 1st mic muffled. I have the sennheiser ew100 ? I wonder how that stacks up to this little guy ?
The price + internal battery = dealbreaker. I’d love to go smaller but I need to be able to change batteries in the field. The Rodelinks have been so awesome for me that I own 8 sets!
Yeah it's a shame, you almost need to buy multiple sets. I think it's compelling though because in reality I only use it for 1 to 2 hours max but your usage might be different. They are tiny though!
I love my Rode Links, came from owning and regularly using the sennheiser G3. The Rode Links are plasticy, but incredible durable as a whole - don’t have to worry about people sitting on them or dropping them when they’re taking it off. For documentary & corporate work the size of the transmitter and receiver have never been a problem for me - for narrative of course you’ll want smaller
@@TheEditingResource I'm weary on the 5 hours of battery life. Most of the time I only need 2 hours or less but a bit sketched out about forgetting to charge them. Really wish it was about 8 hours and had a fast charging option. Size has been an issue on some shoot's though, especially for weddings.
I used a set at the Namm show for all of our videos and discovered that you can use it with an external USB brick battery if you need more than 5 hours. I was able to charge it at use it from my Mobi battery.
That was so fast man! Thanks for that, I pulled the trigger immediately! Make sure to add an Amazon UK affiliate link man so we can support you through there also ;)
AVX and XSW are different a couple of ways. AVX uses the DEC band which is at 1.9 Gig. It is less crowded than 2.4 and is also license free world wide. Because of this you can expect better range on AVX. On the downside DEC band devices have longer latencies. The AVX has a latency of 17ms. This is not a problem for video but for live musical performances using in ear monitoring it is too long. The XSW-D has low latency of about 4 ms. The XSW-D also has a wide ranging gain input that can go from Mic to line levels with virtually no adjustment and a different RF technology. Because 2.4 is a pretty crowded space Sennheiser put in some pretty clever tools to maintain the link even in noisy WI-FI environments. Im pretty amazed they were able to squeeze this into such a small package.
I purchased the XSW-D VOCAL SET and the XSW-D PORTABLE ENG SET. I assumed that I could use the lav mic with its transmitter from the XSW-D PORTABLE ENG SET and link to any other XSW-D receiver by doing a manual pairing. I wanted to use the XLR receiver from the XSW-D VOCAL SET but when I try to link them by holding down the power button on each to get them to cycle green and red, nothing happens and they don't link. Are none of the transmitter and receivers compatible between any of the XSW systems?
Thanks for this review. No question, clarity and volume both jumped with the Senn, but so did the sibilance. I've got the Rode Kit but may swap out. My only concern is no gain setting. I've got a beautiful Senal UTM-86 Lav Mic which produces incredible sound but it's very low sensitivity at -64 dB ±3 dB vs -53 for the Senn Lav. Have you tried this kit with a lower sensitivity mic
I have the XSW-D and I'm noticing a significant noise floor. What camera are you doing this test with? I'm using a Panasonic G85. I don't think the Sennheiser necessarily sounds clearer, and you can tell that your voice is getting a bit blown out. I'm still doing tests, but I'm unsure if I can deal with the noise and potential for distortion. This can be helped somewhat by the mic limiter on my G85, but not completely.
Can this transmitter handle two microphones at the same time? In case of when you do an interview and you want the other person to also be connected to a microphone
I'm really interested in this system but the fact that there is no way to adjust the levels worries me. If you have 5 transmitters all sending sound at different sensitivities, how are you supposed to fix it? Also, is there a way to use different receivers on different channels?
I'm a noob. If I got the lav setup, I understand I would get one receiver and one transmitter. The receiver would sit on top of the camera and plug into the DSLR's 3.5mm jack and then sync with the video. If I wanted to shoot a 2 person interview with this setup: A) Would I have to purchase an additional transmitter/receiver or could I just purchase and additional transmitter/mic setup and sync it to the existing receiver? B) If you do have to purchase 2 receivers and 2 transmitters, how would you be able to record the tracks since the camera only has 1 3.5mm jack?
Hello Max, great review, thank you! I have a quick question for you. I am using mix-pre 3 for all my work but sometimes I need quick/simple & lighter solution for audio. I was thinking about Rode Wireless Go MIC system but I just saw this video. If price is not an issue, what would you prefer for run & gun quick project, Rode Wireless Go or Sennheiser XSW-D? Thanks in advance.
Hey Max, I like all your videos, I want to ask you for mini XLR wireless for Blackmagic pocket cinema 4K for register from audio mixer wireless to camera. Thank you very much
Are these Analog or digital like the Rode? I've used Sennheiser's 500 series mics and moments of static was often a problem no matter how much you adjusted the settings.
@@MaksimYuryev OK thought it was analog hopping Good to know. I'll look for your in depth. Please do some range testing. Your review on this kind of thing are great.
Would you really prefer the Sennheiser XSW-D to Rodelink RODE Filmmaker Kit? Me not. The Sennheiser XSW-D isn't really reliable. Even the Azden Pro has more stable Audio Connection than the Sennheiser XSW-D :-(
Is it possible to use multiple transmitters with one receiver to cover multiple people in an interview environment OR does each transmitter need it's own receiver? The 1st option would be ideal for multiple guests needing mics, etc all flowing /mixing into one receiver?
Unfortunately it is a single channel receiver. You can use 4 systems reliably in a single area and they will work to avoid interference as a group. This is also a digital system so it will sound clearer than any of the super low cost analog systems. For 2 channels you are around 600.00 us which is the cost of a single channel of a pro analog system. The difference you get in a more professional system is a more robust RF link and better sound quality.
wait a minute. youre say that you can have multiple mics (multi interview) send their signal to one receiver so that you dont need to sync in post?! can the rode do that? I havent had time to play with it that much
Sorry no. You can pair any of their transmitters with any receiver. So you can have an XLR and 3.5mm transmitter like their ENG kit and use whichever one is best for your need. Check out this one for what you're talking about geni.us/xZu6t
@@MaksimYuryev Have you had a chance to use these? I need a dual set and picked up the their entry level dual set WM4C. It works okay but was hoping I could get something with a little better sound. Don't mind spending a little more money if the sound is improved. Also worried about sound cutting out on the C9. Read some reviews at that.
Question unrelated. I just bought a XT3 (three days ago) with the 35F2 lens. When I go outside at night to shoot slow motion at 120, anytime I crank my SS over 200 I see brown horizontal banding. This only happens at night, not in good lighting. Any ideas if this is normal?
@@joshdiditt Okay. That's sounds normal. It's just that some lights have flickering. That's why some lighting kits advertise as flicker-free. It has to do with how the light flickers interact with the speed of the shutter. Incandescent light bulbs tend to have no flicker compared to fluorescent or cheap LEDs.
There is no such thing as better or worse mics per se. Rather, mic difference generally depends on the situation: voice, distance from mic, environment, etc. Your voice is top high which can be grating after a while. The Rode mic attenuates that brilliance and is therefore, the preferred mic in that instance. An opposite sounding bass voice, would work better using the Sennheiser.
@@MaksimYuryev I have the mic9 but I think there is a 10. I use two for weddings and interviews. That was why I originally switched brands after my rhode broke.

I’m having major clipping issues with this thing turned camera volume all the way down to 1 and the mic is stil clpping
Looking good Max!
Can this transmitter handle two microphones at the same time? In case of when you do an interview and you want the other person to also be connected to a microphone
Sennheiser XSW-D -for the WIN
Amazing video and Sound! I think the Sennheiser ich much better. Wich settigs did you use in your Camera?
Just change the lav on the Rode ... You can achieve dramatic improvements.
what do i have to buy if i want to lav mic up 3 people but have only 1 receiver receiving all 3 signals at once?
This is nice, what about how they compare with Sennheiser AVX
Well that is easy. The AVX system has auto-levels and more buttons as well as displays and removable batteries.
Can you connect the Sennheiser receiver to a Zoom or similar recorder?
Nice review, definitely a cool unit. I just purchased an AVX MKE2 3 days ago though. :-O
and I will see you in the next rodeo
Thank you very much
I concur Max sennheiser is better quality and will be my first purchase. Thanx great vlog. 😊
Seems like the sennheiser boosts the highs a bit too much for my taste. I think the Rode sounds more natural
I wonder how the Sennheiser XS stacks up against the Sennheiser AVX?
cool
Are these Analog or digital like the Rode? I've used Sennheiser's 500 series mics and moments of static was often a problem no matter how much you adjusted the settings.
They are digital and hop between frequencies automatically to be on the best one and if it senses interference it will switch without you noticing it.
@@MaksimYuryev OK thought it was analog hopping Good to know. I'll look for your in depth. Please do some range testing. Your review on this kind of thing are great.
Hey Max,
Do you know if this system also works with the Sennheisser XLR-1/8th adapter that comes with the G3 packs?
filmmakers or Vlogers? How would I record a few people at the same time?
wow i would want of these things !
Would you really prefer the Sennheiser XSW-D to Rodelink RODE Filmmaker Kit? Me not. The Sennheiser XSW-D isn't really reliable. Even the Azden Pro has more stable Audio Connection than the Sennheiser XSW-D :-(
Dang it! I literally just bought a rodelink two days ago
It's still a great kit, just depends on your priorities. :)
I did like sennheiser microphone better, it sounds clearer and better IMO. Doesn’t hurt that it is cheaper.
sounds great
How does it compare with the Comica cvm-ws50?
I have the comica and want to ditch it for the sennheiser set with the XLR for handheld interviews as fast as possible :D
and Comica WS60! www.comica-audio.com/products_list/pmcId=75.html
Waiting for rode’s new kit. $199 I believe.
They're always sold out though. That's a shame
The video is still 360p, I'm early! Looking forward to the comparison video.
I think they both sound a little overdriven. Little too hot pregained?
Is it possible to use multiple transmitters with one receiver to cover multiple people in an interview environment OR does each transmitter need it's own receiver? The 1st option would be ideal for multiple guests needing mics, etc all flowing /mixing into one receiver?
This one is just one channel, Check out this one for what you're talking about geni.us/xZu6t
So if I had two mic transmitters, can I transmit two mics to one receiver with these?
No, it says it is limited to one at a time.
Nate Ethington damn it.
Could this be used with say a Rode NTG-2 as a wireless shotgun mic system?
I believe there is a base option that can connect to xlr so possibly yes
Seems to be the case as the NTG-2 can be powered by AA batteries. These don't supply phantom power.
I’m not seeing that iPhone sized battery pack. Can you link it?
Sorry! geni.us/mUqP
Max, how do these compare with the “Wireless GO s”?
wait a minute. youre say that you can have multiple mics (multi interview) send their signal to one receiver so that you dont need to sync in post?! can the rode do that?
@@MaksimYuryev Hey Maxx thank you for the fast response I appreciate it :)
can you use it with two lav mics and one receiver?
Not at the same time. You can switch between multiple mics but you can only have one turned on at any given time.
I like this. I like it a lot.
👍🏻
Hey Max, what’s the link for the powerbank?
So sorry, here you go geni.us/mUqP
I want one solely so Tony Northrup stops making fun of our giant Rodelink packs.
Lol good enough reason
caught the 360p version!
But what if you want audio for 2 people? Is there a GOOD wireless solution?
Check out this one for what you're talking about geni.us/xZu6t
Question unrelated. I just bought a XT3 (three days ago) with the 35F2 lens. When I go outside at night to shoot slow motion at 120, anytime I crank my SS over 200 I see brown horizontal banding. This only happens at night, not in good lighting. Any ideas if this is normal?
It might be the artificial lighting used. Does the banding travel up or down the frame at a steady rate? Try changing your shutter speed.
@@huyked when I change shutter speed it goes away. It only come when I'm over 1/120
@@joshdiditt
Okay.
Where is the link to poverbank?
The biggest selling point is that it's able to connect more than 1 transmitter compared to the røde filmmaker set..
But only one at a time.
@@naterpotater76 Yeah just found out, still sucks then
I think the rode is better, but I’d like the sen for RUclips
Dose this support Sony a 6400?
Feature-wise, the saramonic UwMic9 still is ahead... Quality wise, I can't tell...
How much this senneiser lapel?
And how to order?
about 250€
it's nice but I think I will stick with my saramonic. I think they are about half that price
Which set do you have? I’m testing one off theirs right now.
@@MaksimYuryev I have the mic9 but I think there is a 10. I use two for weddings and interviews. That was why I originally switched brands after my rhode broke.
What is the ms delay of these units? The AVX can be problematic at 19ms.
4 ms.. Way faster than AVX.
Ted Bahas have you tested it against the abc in terms of range and performance?
David Stevens abt 200ft open air line of sight. Abt 70-80 ft on the sales floor at Sweetwater with about 27 active networks in the building. Also the performance was very predictable. You could trust a walk test.
Small size is nice but I would prefer bigger size if that would give 8h battery. 5h is not enough.
True I wish it was 8 hours.
Какой павер банк показан в этом видео?
Thanks for this Max... I am unsubscribing from all the other channels on YT and get all of news from you! :)
