  • 2019 Kia Optima First Drive and Review. Kia adds standard ADAS systems to its already value-packed sedan. With its good looks, strong turbo engine and huge smattering of onboard tech, it's certainly worth your attention. And with a number of updates for the 2019 model year, the Optima is better suited to battle fresh-faced competitors like the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry.

    Lane keep assist doesn't help when you "drift out of the lane." It keeps you CENTERED in the lane.

      The 2011 Optima influenced the 18 Accord and 18 camry lmfao!!
      They saw how Kia went from the bottom of the barrel to near the top so quick.
      And the exterior design was so good they hardly made changes to it for 8yrs mainly changed the face.
      Previous gen accord design lasted 4yrs b4 18
      And the camry only 2yrs b4 the 18 model.

    I have noticed the Kia is really trying hard to be the cheaper Audi alternative rather than a Toyota alternative.
    Limited and SXL trim levels:
    Audi A4 - Optima
    Audi A5 - Stinger
    Audi Q5 - Sportage
    Audi A6 - Cadenza
    Audi Q7 - Sorento
    Audi A8 - Quoris
    Kia's like: " Hey, if you're looking for a luxury car on a budget but can't find something priced below $50K, then check us out! "
    It's sort of a strategy by bridging the gap between Toyotas and Hondas to Audis and Mercedes-Benzs.
    Same thing with what Mazda has been doing recently with the Mazda CX-9, Mazda 6, and Mazda 3.

      ruzzell907 I definitely get an Audi vibe from my car (14 SX Turbo) in terms of design. From the tail lamps to the dash layout (How its driver centered), Kia proves they have some of Germany's best engineers. In my opinion the driving dynamics didn't translate as German on my car, but the 16' suspension/steering re-tune of the Optima (which is the same for 19') may have fixed that. Overall, it's an excellent car.

    I'll stick with a 2.4 L naturally aspirated engine. Not that a turbo is bad mind you, but most people neglect service and that is detrimental to a turbo. Besides, the more there is, the more there is to go wrong. I use my '13 Sonata for business (2.4L) and it just turned over a hundred and seven thousand miles. Being a former mechanic myself I'm still one of those crazy people that changes oil every 3000 miles (synthetic). Transmission fluid every 15000 miles (synthetic). Drop and replace coolant every year. And replace spark plugs and serpentine belt every 50,000 miles. Excessive? Wasteful? I plan on getting a quarter million miles out of this car. Maybe more. Engine Oil ,transmission fluid and coolant are cheap. Engines and Transmissions are expensive.

    • @recoveringnewyorker2243
      @recoveringnewyorker2243 6 лет назад

      Sang Eeth MEGABUCKS! The last time I saw a bill for a turbo replacement it was $2,200. The was on a Saab 9000 in 1989! However, turbo's have come a LONG way since then. They are very reliable. But as I said, The more there is the more there is to go wrong.

    • @geethsan1567
      @geethsan1567 6 лет назад

      Yeah, exactly what I have been thinking. Turbos would be more reliable these days but I just hope they get more and more developed into better reliability. Anyway's thanks man.

    Apologies for the silly question, but does anyone notice a slight "wiggly/loose" feel to the touch on the 2019 Optima Sx Paddle Shifters right before fully pressing the Paddle down? Is this normal or is it something that needs to be fixed/addressed? (granted they are obviously not of bmw quality etc) Any help is greatly appreciated!

    Man this is crazy I was a huge fan of the design of the last HYUNDAI SONATA from 2015-2017 but when they refreshed it for 2018, I thought it was hideous and I was sad too I wish they would have just freshened up the exterior of that and kept the grill and the overall design the same. But now the KIA OPTIMA looks 110% better than the SONATA I just wish HYUNDAI would have kept that premium and sleek design but now it looks like a razor on the front of it. I guess I'm buying an OPTIMA now.

    2013 Optima SXL owner here and i'm more of a "POWER" guy than the "TECH".. and I just can't see myself trading my baby's nearly 300hp for this.. though its a good looking car, the front bumper to me "sorta" reminisce the '11-'13 model with a slight tweak.

      2018 SX owner here with tech package, I definitely can not see myself downgrading to the '11-'15 especially since the '16+ have better and more reinforced steel and crispier handling. All in all the newer gen is a much better driving car.

      Russell C Its a refresh of a refresh....lol. That's their way of adding features. The 16 was a redesign and powertrain/suspension retune. This one is just cosmetics and active saftey features added. It looks better than the 16 redesign in my opinion but I still love the 14-15 body style.

      Steven Joe Sonata looks fresher and newer. In my opinion, has a better front dash design with infotainment system. Also has more sharper exterior than more rounded shape of Optima. Although, both are running mostly same engine options, I just feel more inclined towards Sonata.
      But in all honesty, if I was buying right now, I would go for either V6 Camry or the all new Mazda 6. But again, that's just me

      Monsieur Africain i do, because I'm not some pretentious wannabe trendsetter technopuke who can't appreciate when something works fine the way it is

      pontiacGXPfan the 8-track worked fine, it was replaced. The cassette tape worked fine, it was replaced. That's how technology is. The car has a USB port so you can listen to a huge flash drive, Bluetooth audio streaming and Android Auto/Apple Carplay so that you can listen to your favorite streaming service.

      All car companies are doing away with CD players it's a waste ppl dont listen to CDs anymore ppl use phones flash drives bluetooth etc so CD players are coming to an end

      Mike Conerly I listen to them because I like the ability to do whatever I want with my own music. streaming sacrifices this in favor of thousands of songs that you can only borrow and have to pay to borrow, no less

    Dash and IP looking dated compared to Accord and Mazda 6.

      Agree and it actually look exactly like the previous gen interior from when Mazda updated the latest model of the Mazda6 which was introduced back in 2014, refreshed in 2016 with the tablet style and then refreshed again in 2018. Optima's is looking old in comparison to these two especially.

    If I'm gonna spend 30k plus for a "grocery getter" I'm getting the 300hp Camry. The only other "grocery getter" I'd consider is the Maxima. Everything else in the segment looks like they were designed by autistic people wearing blindfolds or don't offer competitive horse power i.e. Honda Accord, Hyundai Sonata, Kia Optima.

      The Camry is all looks with no substance 🙄. The Accord is just as fast with less horsepower and a broader powerband! How bout that 😌.

    • @L0stW0n
      @L0stW0n 6 лет назад

      Yes the Accord is a bit more sportier to drive because it has a (down tuned) Civic type R 4 banger engine. Unfortunately Honda made their 2019 hybrid Insight look 100 times better than their bread and butter vehicle, the Accord. So I'll passed on the Dodge Charger inspired front bumper and grill with those hideous lobster claw tail lights.

      Numbers don’t tell the whole story. The accord is faster than the 301hp Camry. Not by much but it is. And that’s down almost 50hp to the Camry. Gearing and more trq is why the accord is faster. The optima down only 9hp and 12 lb ft is way slower than the accord bc of its out dated 6spd auto. Plus the accord being so much lighter.

      Your info system on your Camry looks and feels like it is 10 years old already.Get your dust bunny out for that hideous shinny plastic black face info screen.Those buttons are leftovers from the 80's..

    2.4L??? Why??? 1.6L turbo??? Do not make any sense...2.0L turbo???? Why didn't they just make a 2.4L turbo instead of having all these engines for no reason?

    • @skifree0
      @skifree0 6 лет назад +13

      Because they are not new? Building new engines take A LOT of R&D, and to justify it they have to share the engine across multiple platforms.
      Hyundai's engine line for compact+ vehicles typically included
      the 2.4L NA motor typically used as a base motor for mid sized cars and up
      the 1.6T is a "upgraded" engine for Compact sized cars, so it can also be used here has a semi upgrade
      the 2.0T used in formally genesis coupes, and the more "performance" cars serves as the upgraded engine.
      There's no 2.4T because the R&D to develop it wouldn't be worth it. Really if they needed more power they would just tune up their 2.0T to it's max rated performance (276hp in the first generation of that motor and whats coming on the N cars). Any more power and it's cheaper to step up to their 3.3L TT v6
