    • @ncktyu
      @ncktyu 10 лет назад

      ***** If you want to define success as living comfortably and not starving then go right ahead. But that isn't how I would define it. If I inherited millions and millions of dollars from my parents and lived through life without much struggle but contributed nothing to society or to the betterment of mankind then I wouldn't call my life successful. It would be a miserable, selfish, shameful existence.

    • @ncktyu
      @ncktyu 10 лет назад

      At risk of launching into a full on political debate, I will hold my views on the statement that rich people don't owe poor people anything. But, yeah, The ultimate goal in life for many people is happiness and that, if have having been achieved it, will be the reaching point of success. So, yeah, most people don't have any desire to have a meaningful impact on the moral progress of society and that's fine. Success is whatever you want it to be. If I just wanted to be a very rich person in life and eventually became that then I would consider myself successful. If I care more about having an effect on the world in a positive way and don't achieve that but still achieve wealth, fortune and opulence then I still probably won't consider my life very successful. A successful life is one in which you have fulfilled your life goals and desires.

      My stepdad got his ged and makes 7 digits owning his own business. Just because you go to college doesn't mean you will be successful, but just because you never want doesn't mean you won't be successful.

But of course, i turned Harvard down for Princeton as it has always been a tradition for every male in my family to be a Princeton Tiger.

    In anything but those three things? What about Physics, Engineering, Neuroscience, Geology, Economics and a lot of other specialized professions? The world may revolve a lot around medicine, law, and business, but innovation and social progress are marked by other professions. All medical machinery (including the legendary CT Scan) were based on discovered principles of physics. Business is nothing without creative/innovative products/services. Law is... well... memorization and discourse.

    I really always wanted to go there. How is bullying in college tolerated(especially at a top school)? Also, what kind of bullying, specifically? I think namecalling goes on at any school. I'm currently at a public university, and that happens here all the time. It makes me feel like I don't belong because I am really nice, smart, and helpful, and I would hope that by going to an Ivy the students wouldn't have as much time to be jerks. when do the Ivy students even have time to gossip?

I feel like that's a bad stereotype to hold onto. Maybe the legacies feel entitled and better than the rest of the world, but a lot of us first generation, here on financial aid, who busted our asses to get here. We're just like anyone else.

    I'm Asian, I was accepted to every top school that did not have affirmative action. Meaning UC Berkeley and UCLA. You might just think that I peaked there...WRONG. I wasn't accepted to schools BELOW UCLA and Berkeley. Take discrimination away and I absolutely promise you Asians would take over 50% of Harvard, and not the 20% that they've been limited to over the past 5-10 years. They were growing in numbers but for some reason were cut off at just about exactly 20%.

    Not their fault they come from successful families? Don't try to put them down for reasons they have no control over. At least they are doing something with their opportunity. Don't for one second think they don't deserve to be there or that they didn't work their asses off

    • @Angelito_Noreaga
      @Angelito_Noreaga 6 лет назад

      Michael D. I think the point of highlighting the fact that they come from wealthy families does at least a couple of positive things: 1) It shows that there are people who are as qualified or more qualified to go tha their wealthier competition, but are unable to go for financial reasons. 2) It shows that Harvard isnt able to assemble the best student body it possibly can because of the financial barrier that it creates with its unreachabley high cost of tuition. By limiting itself to a majority of students based on their family's socioecomic status, Harvard misses out on some of the best students.

    Finally, as someone applying to med school, I understand disparity, but without the people behind the statistics your claims are useless (like how many of the suits for racism pull out). Med schools say to applicants, don't apply because it is the most difficult challenge you can think of, your Mt. Everest, but for passion. Med boards see right through this (or money driven) and scrutinizing Harvard committees can see those try-hards, resume polishers with absolutely no soul or substance

  • @Sartorius988

    I'm not saying what Harvard is doing is illegal, i'm saying the facts so everyone knows. I actually feel bad for African Americans who do deserve their places who had scores that were good enough, because guess what happens. People will assume that if you are African American and graduated from Harvard that you got in on AA. Thats further discrimination. I'm arguing for likely the most sensible thing in the world, equality of opportunity. I would support preference for low-socio economic status.

  • @Sartorius988
    @Sartorius988 11 лет назад

    (continued). I understand that coming from a low working class neighbourhood where its difficult to find role models and easy to find trouble is harder. However, I've read that 1/3rd of all Ivy League black admits were actually the children of african middle class immigrants. Do those people really need the admissions help? Do poor asians really need to be stomped on? The argument even fails on historical discrimination grounds. What have asians ever done to black people regarding slavery?

  • @shirleybrice1394
    @shirleybrice1394 11 лет назад

    Don't blame black people 4 everything! They work hard for an education just like any1 else who has a yearning to achive something in life. Its like some of you just don't want 2 see black people achive. Im not black but I find it ridiculous how people keep putting them on blame for their problems. Its not THEIR fault u didn't get in2 the college u wanted to get into. So, stop hating.

    My teacher went for havard to study math. Guess what, he was nowhere near the sucess that havard student are meant to be. He practically a math tutor(That pay less than 50k) for my saturday school program and lives with his mom.. Even if he gets master he still not going to get a good job(Bright student he went to stuyvesant for high school)But he winds up geting a job that does not require ivy league education. Unless you went to community college,the college choice doesnt reakky matter. It what you study and do that counts. I can still be a doctor and go to stonybrook for under grad. Harvard does not spell success it just brings more job opportunities for guys that want to study law or buisness. If you want to work at google one day or something in science you might as well go to NYU for job opportunities. My sister is gotta be the laziest person alive but gets into NYU. But she been given a job as a scientist in the leading research for Defensive arms at Heckler Koch. You go to these tops schools for company issue jobs(in the field they specialize) not because you automatically get paid more. Otherwise that means all rich people went to harvard or a ivy leagues. If you want to work at google,boeing,intel etc and/or you need full ride you go to these schools. Otherwise dont panic if you didnt go to high lvl school
