I've made many RR Spike knives, if they find one person willing to spend a couple hundred dollars on that knife, they have stumbled upon a top notch sucker. In my humble opinion of course.
I never understood why Eustace Conway didn't just go to the junkyard and get some leaf springs off of a Chevy pickup or something for dirt cheap to make his knives
"Another "high carbon" misconception involves railroad spikes. Nearly every bladesmith has made knives from railroad spikes. Railroad spikes are readily available, usually for free, they are a novel item, and they can make a perfectly useable knife. However, they simply do not contain enough carbon to make a good blade. One big misunderstanding comes from railroad spikes that are marked "HC" for "High Carbon". The problem is that what the railroads consider "High Carbon" is equivalent to what a knifemaker would call low carbon mild steel. According to specifications set forth by American Railway Engineering Association there are two classes of railroad spikes, low carbon track spikes used on straight sections of railroads and high carbon steel track spikes used on curves and switches. According to the specifications, low carbon spikes may contain no more than 0.12% carbon and "High Carbon" spikes may contain NO MORE THAN 0.30% carbon"
While it doesn't look the best, it's a starting point for anyone. I remember Eustace's deceased friend made a good pig sticking knife from an old saw mill blade and it turned out nice.
you'd be suprised howe many people would buy that knife for that much. People like andy alm, who specializes in RRspike knives, sells his for upwards of $100 - $300.
You the man Eustace! Easy to get $200 for such a cool handmade knife that will last a lifetime. You are like Duddy Kravitz about your new land. Go get em.
They are high if they think they are going to get hundreds per knife for that junk. That handle looks so uncomfortable to hold, they would have better luck just grinding up the files into knives like all the other etsy people.
those knives are good looking and i would happily pay 300$ for a knife like that and you could also just wrap something around the handle of the knife to make it more comfortable
Railroad spikes are mild steel,so they cannot be hardened or tempered, they could've at least forge welded a high carbon steel insert to make it better and longer lasting
Exactly, railroad spike knives are just made by smiths to practice with, there's no way anyone would pay that much. For 200 I would have to make a much nicer knife.
Yeah I wouldnt expect anyone smart to pay that. I have several that I made when I started blacksmithing. I sold some yes but nowhere near 200. But I've seen people waste money on less.
Well, for a hand forged one, with a story they might. In this case, the story is that he's going to use the profits to protect historic woodlands, so realistically there will be some people who will buy these because they want to help him out, not because the actual knife is worth that much. I'd say the knife in and of itself is probably worth more like about $50, but again, with the story, I bet some people will buy these. Also If you have questions about my thoughts on this feel free to respond, I'm a blacksmith and a conservationist myself so I do know some stuff.
I've been watching this show since Eustace first got that land I'm not a rich man but if I had the money I'd buy that land for him. Eustace is a good hard working man and he lives his life true.
actually custom knives like that can be at sold at around 100 dollars. They would make a lot more money a lot faster if they would just buy steel bar and make knives from that...
Making knives quickly by forge welding? Thats something you have to practice a lot, you need alot of fuel and borax isnt the magic word for success. The way to do it is the key. The fire didnt seem right, you need to be at least 2, railway spikes are a cool way to do things but not the way I would go for speed ... Take a spring leaf off your truck, its much faster, or go to the nearest scrapyard.
Excellent move into knives, I’m actually doing something similar in Ireland , have you thought of bronze ? Best of luck though you seem to have cracked it , well done
I think the knife looks awesome, he needs to put his makers mark on it and sell em. Property of Eustace Conway hand made knives. That alone is pretty dang cool.
yeah i thought that too, they dont deserve the work put in. but i dont know much about forging, since all knives i made were stock removal from files, scrap knives and metal

No temper,no hardening, mild steel railroad spike knife The guy:a couple hundred dollars, like man even an apartment dwelling person would do better, these guys are overdramatized and sensationalised, and that neckbeard says it all, likely some p**n addicted weeb If i spent a couple hundred on a knife,it'd better have 5160 steel razor sharp edge and the highest quality wood scales with a hand crafted leather sheath, not a mild steel railroad spike knife like object
Highest quality wood scales? I mean, every wood is if stabilised, it is more about looks. But yeah, he is happy if he gets 50$ for railroad spike knife. But what gives the knife the price is more about complexity of crafr reather than material. Unless you go with uber steel that need nitrogen for heat treatment (after air quench) or some 1000 old tree wood scales. It is more about craft. The blade is simplest part. I make knives as hobby. Need less than 2 hours for the blade, a whole day for a handle
Those knives aren't worth the fuel and time they spent on them. They also didn't do the most important part, they didn't temper them. Next time buy some 1075. For less than 75.00 you could buy enough to make a couple dozen knives that size. Plus it's a lot easier to work. You could actually do a decent heat treat and tempering with the equipment you have there and make a real working knife. We all know this show is as fake as a four dollar bill. That's not why we watch it. But at least try to accomplish better deceptions than what you do. If you need an advisor I'm available for the right price. 😆
but they file steel is what makes the cutting edge. Only problem that some moder files are only high carbon on the surface so they aren't good for blades
