So did Chevys. '70 Chevy Nomad wagon that my grandfather had. Same concept but no motors and that rear glass took forever to get up. Down was waaay easier.
Well done John Ross, nice to see you take the time to repair the latches as opposed to just fitting new ones. Too many "mechanics" now a days are really just fitters, they don't actually repair anything.
Yay....yours is the first video I have seen that shows how to fix some of the issues with my beast. I purchased my 2004 XUV a couple of years ago and unfortunately, I do not have a manual for it. Thankfully, everything was operational with respect to the retractable roof, midgate and tailgate except for being able to open the tailgate downward (although the touch actuator itself works). From your video, I can now determine that it is indeed, the right hand side latch that is the problem as it does not engage when lowering and therefore the tailgate is not attached to that side! I will now try and see if I can clean it to attempt to get it to engage and if not, perhaps try and remove it and fix it as you have done although I am not confident in my skills to do so. I appreciate the information and will see what I can do. I look forward to more videos in the future.
I enjoy watching JRgo because he actually dives in and fixes things instead of parts swapping. Time to tear the hoverboard apart and replace caps. I have a $2000 subwoofer that I got for $25 because the caps on the amp blew. I spent $10 on high end caps(including duplicates and shipping) and it’s been working everyday for over a year
He shoots he scores on the tailgate/window! Nice! Make sure that hoverboard thing is fully powered down/disconnected. Don't want to find out the warehouse/garage burned down cause the rest of the battery pack blew up overnight.
I got my XUV to the same place you have yours in this video. Can't wait to see how you get the roof to open and that back window to go up. Mine came with the factory XUV tent.
My technique here would have been to keep the latches assembled. Soak each latch in a pan of rubbing alcohol overnight. Blow air and flush out the alcohol. Now SPRAY soak each latch with DeOxIt. Then follow up with a spray flush of CRC silicone spray. I've had great success with many latches, window motors and regulators, and even dash stepper motors.
I think one of the things that made this channel successful in its infancy was your dynamic with your friends, Josh in particular. I dunno if you need any one specific friend to make things more compelling, but really, I do believe that having somebody there to work with will make this content more fulfilling.
Good fix on the latches. I had to do the same on the sliding door of our KIA Sedona. They wanted way too much (I thought) for a replacement latch so I took apart the old one, cleaned and lubed it like you did yours and it has been working fine now for about a year and a half so far.
The top works in conjunction with the rear window limit switch - i.e., it knows when the back window is down before it will open. Also, when the rear window is closed and you activate the swing out rear door the window drops about an inch before it releases the door and closes back when shut.
Thanks much..the lower left latch on my XUV had stopped locking. After watching your video I had the info to take it apart, clean and lube everything and it's back in service.
Excellent Job !! Have a 2004 XUV that is EXCELLENT working condition Bought it from Original owner last year .. Low ..... Miles Every available option !! Just had to put in new A.C. actuator / A.C, was coming thru defrost vents Mine came with the factory roof racks .. Very hard to find option Also the GMC marked cargo area floor mat numbered
This video was great to see. I enjoy seeing people repair stuff instead of chucking it for new, especially when supply/demand mean you have to be creative. Nice work JR. I just picked up my Autel Maxisys Elite off of ebay a week ago. For all the features cars are coming with now, you almost need it. The 'ol "scope on a rope" test light isn't enough.
Definitely looking into getting an Autel. I'm starting to work on newer fuel-injected cars more and my $20 code reader isn't cutting it. Hoping the MK808 can do what I need. My carbureted Mopars are so much easier to diagnose.
Thank you so much for videoing/documenting this. I just bought an XUV and so far I love it but I’m having similar tailgate issues. Very informative video. Keep it up and thanks again!
My XUV latches didn't work well and it didn't always recognize that they were closed so I cleaned them up and now I can gently close them and it registers so everything works!
Looking at the condition of that rear glass when you raised it, I'd suggest that stripping the whole tailgate down and thoroughly cleaning up everything inside it is going to be a very good idea. All that fine dust that you get from living on a dirt road will turn into a very effective glue when combined with the assembly grease put on components when they're built, and that can very easily gum up things like window regulators and stop them working, which, on a complex set up like this, can easily stop the whole thing from working. I can't imagine replacing the tailgate window regulator is a cheap or pleasant job, and it's working at the moment, so cleaning it all up and then re-lubricating it now will be insurance against a future failure. Plus, all the dust that will have no doubt collected in the bottom of the tailgate will make a very good water trap when the window seals get tired and start letting water by, and that's a guarantee that the bottom of the tailgate will rot out...
Im trying to fix these latches for my moms envoy xuv… ive had both apart 20x ea probably with no luck. I sprayed a bunch of red grease in both of them… do you think the red grease might be too sticky/ tacky and causing them not to latch now?
JR.. a friend bought a 65 Tbird Retractable.. the top was stuck closed but one of the cast aluminim arms was broken from somebody trying to get it to move.. the entire top had to be taken apart.. the arm crack ground out and rewelded . because the car sat with the top apart outside during this time the relays all filled with water.. the connectors all filled with water.. the limit switches all filled with water. had to take all the motors apart.. had a heck of a time finding all the relays.. they are special.. finally gave up and found some Thomas and Betts connectors that were just the right shape to plug into the molded rubber relay harness connectors.. wires up 12 volt double pole double throw relays that plugged into a big screw base.. but had to go in and replace the braided cables for thicker as they could not handle the motor power.. ran some 70 amp relays off those double pole double throw relays to control the hydraulic pump and its solenoids.. 1 pump.. 4 cylinders 2 or 4 solenoids.. its been a long time.. folding flap motors.. screw down motors.. all the limit switches finally got it to work flawlessly.. the car owner who was also a restorer but not as deep into repairs as i was.. apparently was so amazed that he ran the top back and forth watching it till it overheated the pump and burned up the commutator.. took that out.. he finally found a motor shop to rewind the armature motor and put a new commutator.. he had placed the pump parts in a 5 gallon bucket on his porch .. i had snapped a lid on it.. apparently he took the lid off looking for something.. left it off.. when the armature was ready.. the entire pump was found soaking in water and ruined.. so i got another normal 2 port 3 wire convertible top pump.. its had a lot smaller displacement.. then had to go thru all the switches again.. as the top was deck cover was left vertical and the top frame was left vertical.. hint.. when doing convertible top stuff.. have a proper size inverted flair union and 2 inverted flare plugs.. you can take one hose off the pump.. screw a union with 1 plug onto the open hose fitting and the other inverted flare plug into the side of the motor.. then take the other hose off the pump.. screw a plug in the motor and a the union with a plug in the other hose fitting.. if you need to move the top.. guess what.. use the union to connect both hoses together.. now your top can be manually operated.. same procedure for the cylinder hoses.. 2 inverted flare plugs and a union for each one. you don't loose but a tea spoon of fluid. the system stays full and bleeding the system is crazy easy. just thought i would share my frustration at limit switches and relays..
GM: "Let's put the tailgate computer in the tailgate" Engineer "That's not a clean environment. Move it to the nearby interior?" GM "Nah, put it in the tailgate. More parts-sales in 10yrs...." On a previous episode "Let's put open-air ABS relay panel directly over the acid-vapor venting battery in this 95 Lumina. What could possibly go wrong?" Pretty much sums up GM from late 90's to 2015.
Thank you so much for the video. Got same problem with mom in laws truck. tailgate glass stuck open and mid gate not working. I found identical truck at salvage yard took both gates complete hopefully parts work. You're awesome man
Luck has been with you so far... maybe. I never had the roof stop working on mine, outside of when the tailgate window regulator died. Seeing that window sink into the tailgate slowly was frustrating, since down was the only way it would go! Just wait until you try to replace that tail wiper blade, maybe you'll have better luck than I did... Its nice to see one again though.
I enjoy tinkering with older cars and have often thought that it woud be great to bring life back to car for resale and profit, but I alway just do it for myself. it is fun eithe way and I enjoy seeing you do this and can;t wait for more content on the shop build

I live in San Diego and I was stopped at a traffic light. A white Trailblazer XUV pulled up next to me. I haven’t seen one in forever. Then your video dropped today.
Hey I have the same problem with my new 04 envoy xuv ..gonna start tearing apart and cleaning hopefully I can fix like you did yours ..but I wanted to ask what that scanner you were talking about towards the end of the vid was called
Thnaks for your videos. They are extremely helpful. I have a 2004 with around 90,000 on it. My hinge to drop the tailgate flat is broken. If you could provide a video on fixing the hinge to drop the tailgate flat it would be greatly appreciated
@WatchJrGo do you remember is there a way to manually release that top latch to drop the endgate. I'd love to rebuild mine but the endgate does not drop only swing out.
I had a similar problem with my Volvo power lock: there was a bit of a short circuit between the 2 pins, so there was not enough voltage to move the motor. The short circuit was coal dust, after a whipe with alcohol, everything workes fine
Hey I’m overhauling the engine in my 2000 corolla (rings, rods bearings, head gasket) I snapped a bolt for the piston end cap so I’m replacing all of those bolts do I need to replace the head bolts.
Here's an idea. Since most of us who watch your channel might not have the resources to own an Autel scanner. Why not have a contest and give one away. I enjoy the fact that you're not afraid to take the small stuff apart. Like the maintenance manager in my plant said,"Hell. It's already broken. Let's find out why it broke.
I bought a new 2004 Envoy in 2004, the XUV, leather, loaded, Bose sound system, 6 air bags, etc. it’s window sticker was $42,400, I paid $26,150 out the door! Its still my daily driver in 2023, it’s a wonderful vehicle, I’ll keep it forever, keep it in good shape, its low production number might make a collector some day. It’s often expensive and tricky when something brakes, tho. How did I get newly half off a brand new untitled GMC, keep reading, you can do the same. I drove across 3 states to see and drive the Envoy XUV. I first asked the dealer for $2000 off as he drove it a few months with his dog in it,, it was covered in white hair that I am allergic too. He agreed and also I asked for and got running board, a deep detail and oil. change. Then I hit him with my $6000 of GM points that I amassed toward my down pmt. Plus using the GM HQ deal $7.5K off. Dealer said they paid more for it from GM then my deal to buy it and dealer tried to cancel my purchase but they called the GM HQ who made them honor the deal(s). GM HQ made dealer give me $750 off for being a 1st time buyer. I picked the XUV as it could also help with farm work, the sliding roof and washable, (3rd seat area), is perfect for hay, grain and bedding plants, plus it had a class 3 hitch. I am now almost ready for a new GM vehicle, with points more saved and w/ GM’s future hefty discounts. The auto industry is in a really bad place now and only will get worse, the deep discounts by end of next year will probably the best. So if you need a new GM car or truck in the future and can’t pay sticker prices, amass points on a GM cc. I pay my mortgage on it. Dealer demo is the most discounted new vehicle on any GM lot, mine had 1400 miles on it. Find out all the discounts from GM HQ before you buy, the dealer won’t tell you, like the 1st time buyer discount!
I hear so much trains on JR's videos, that I had a though: a) Trains are the main transport used by automotive OEMs to transport parts and cars b) JR's shop is right next to that amazing train track c) There are a lot trains going through there d) They could arrange an heist (Breaking Bad like), to secure many cars and parts for the shop. Who would not like to watch such video series?! FBI, maybe 😁
Can you make a list of parts needed to fix the tailgate? Because I have GMC envoy and I trying to see what all I need to get the Tailgate fixed and I didn't even know it flipped down.
I have a 2004 XUV 150250 with the same issue now i know how to fix it my rear gate. I do have a sunroof that is stuck open any ideas on how to fix that.
I had a 1971 Chevy wagon with a disappearing tailgate. The glass went into the roof and the tailgate went into the floor. It was a great idea. Easy access.
This thing is one of those vehicles that will make you question how much your time is valued. With GM, thankfully most of what they build CAN be rebuilt but it's a question of assumption of time and work needed. I remember my grandpa used to say that mechanics aren't mechanics anymore...they're just replacement specialists. A mechanic who would rather take something apart and rebuilt it instead of forcing the customer to spend hundreds buying a replacement is a dying breed. For example...I had a 03 Grand Cherokee with the dreaded death wobble. I was quoted almost 900 dollars to have every bushing replaced in the front suspension because they wanted to order new track bars, ball joints, cv joints and so on. After some digging and asking on several forums I made friends with a bunch of Jeep people who helped me not only replace all of the front suspension bits but UPGRADE them for less than 200 bucks. Yes...it took me a full weekend to do because I wasn't experienced, and I had to borrow a lot of tools to do it...but it was well worth fixing the problem and making it better than dealing with a dealer who'd rather me drive away in a new Wrangler or shaft me for 900 bucks if I don't want to trade it.
Hi JR, Which model Autel MaxiSys did you use in this video? I am the 2nd owner of a 2004 XUV. Everything worked till about a week ago and committed to keeping and restoring this unique vehicle. Thank you for creating all the useful videos.
I know this video is really old but I just bought one of these and the roof works fine The mid-gate window works fine The rear tailgate window worked fine up until I went through the procedure of disassembling and cleaning and re-greasing the latches because they weren't releasing and opening. I got them working just great I now can open it to the right or open it down and it latches and everything's fantastic but now the tailgate window will not go up whether I use the key or the key fob or the button on the ceiling. One thing I noticed is there's some limit switches in those tailgate latches it looks like there was three of them two on one and one on the other and the two were broken and missing and the single switch was intact but when I was putting it back together I broke the little plunger part off but I put it back in the rubber boot and it seems like it should be working. I don't know if that's what's causing my window to not go up anymore. Does the module look to see if the latches are latched closed before it will put power to the window? If so is there a way for me to hotwire the two wires going to the broken limit switch so that the computer just always thinks the tailgate is latched thus allowing me to put the window up and down all the time and anytime?
Hey JR, I have a 2005 GMC Envoy XUV with a broken endgate window regulator. I need to mannually open the gate so I can replace the regulator. I can't figure out how to open. Can you help?
You never asked me if it was a T27. I knew that. You & the Wizard agree that modern, with OBD2 et al, are the way to go. Then there's the Bus Grease Monkey.
Your video was next to a space walk video on the IIS. I read you title saving $500 to fixing the tailgate Latches and saw the space walk thumb nail and thought wow the IIS just fixed the tailgate..
And here I thought my Sequoia was cool for having a roll down rear window. GM ups the ante with two rear roll down windows, a sliding roof, and a multi-hinge tailgate. At least mine isn't a computer controlled nightmare.
Multi hinge tailgates have been around since Ford invented them in 1967. The 3 way tailgate which allows the door to open sideways with the window up came out in 1969.
Unfortunately I can't get mine off the tailgate. All the bolts refuse to loosen even with pb blaster and a spray to loosen the bolt...I forget the name. So sprayed the heck out of the 2 side latches and banged on the side where the bolts are. Worked enough to finally close the door. Not good enough to keep using it but enough to stop straping the door closed and finally use the window again.
Hey JR, You should snag a 3d printer so you can offset some of those part costs. Plus its a perfect addition to the shop
Ford station wagons back in the 60s and 70s had that kind of a tailgate. and they worked without any electronic crap that goes bad.
We had an impala station wagon with the crank back window. Definitely a workout to lower or raise the glass...
Yup. My parents had an 84 caprice wagon. The only motors in the tailgate were for the window and power locks.
So did Chevys. '70 Chevy Nomad wagon that my grandfather had. Same concept but no motors and that rear glass took forever to get up. Down was waaay easier.
Yea my 66 Country Squire and 89 Colony Park have that style tailgate. Super useful
Our 71 Ford door failed
its a trip seeing someone else do this. its the most confusing bs ever, and i worked on them at a gmc dealership
🤣🤣🤣
Now this is the content I was waiting for. I like seeing these odd things fixed.
Well done John Ross, nice to see you take the time to repair the latches as opposed to just fitting new ones. Too many "mechanics" now a days are really just fitters, they don't actually repair anything.

Good diagnosis on the tailgate!
He shoots he scores on the tailgate/window! Nice!
Make sure that hoverboard thing is fully powered down/disconnected. Don't want to find out the warehouse/garage burned down cause the rest of the battery pack blew up overnight.
Definitely one of your more interesting vehicles.
I love this thing, really fun to troubleshoot and repair 💯
Needs wheels to look nice! Maybe a small lift kit!
GM design and quality on every little parts on this suv. Every break down is a feature.🤣
I got my XUV to the same place you have yours in this video. Can't wait to see how you get the roof to open and that back window to go up. Mine came with the factory XUV tent.
My roof is closed, but the dash constantly says "open roof".
DeOxit is the best. It cleans and protects at the same time. It helps us fix most intermittent problems we have on 30 year equipment where I work.
Deoxit 5 is awesome. I use it on battery terminals and contacts

Great vehicle content today. Pretty sweet that you were able to fix the tailgate without buying replacement parts. Thanks JR

Thanks much..the lower left latch on my XUV had stopped locking. After watching your video I had the info to take it apart, clean and lube everything and it's back in service.
Top notch video and information. Our 2004 XUV has been a challenge, but when working we really love its flexibility (and the tent attachment).
Where did you find the tent attachment? I have an 05 xuv. Cant find an envoy tent for anything
Love these episodes. Where you diagnose and fix things. Keep up the good work Jon Ross.
Excellent Job !!
Have a 2004 XUV that is EXCELLENT working condition
Bought it from Original owner last year .. Low ..... Miles
Every available option !!
Just had to put in new A.C. actuator / A.C, was coming thru defrost vents
Mine came with the factory roof racks .. Very hard to find option
Also the GMC marked cargo area floor mat

The last important part is on the way! 💯
@@WatchJRGo very nice! Can't wait to see it all working as it was designed. This one is my favorite of the new year flips for sure!

Great series JR. always thought the xuv was an interesting mid 2000s experiment. Love/hate this era of gm

There are 6 sitting at the local salvage yard here in Cincinnati.
Sounds like some easy money on ebay.
Salvage yard have a website? I have an XUV that needs a couple trim pieces.
Glad you tore apart the hover board. Never heard of the type of Envoy. Looking forward to the clean up.

About to tackle my son's XUV with the same problem. How did you get the latch assemblies back together after you broke the tabs to clean them? Thanks

You did a great job on it JR!

Hey jr... thanks for the video. Do u have time to give any input on the actual open latch parts? Did u by chance photo anything up close?

Thnaks for your videos. They are extremely helpful. I have a 2004 with around 90,000 on it. My hinge to drop the tailgate flat is broken. If you could provide a video on fixing the hinge to drop the tailgate flat it would be greatly appreciated
Thanks for doing the XUV videos. Can you tell me which Autel scanner model you have that forced the rear widow to work ?
You let the magic smoke out of the hoverboard!
I doubt anyone has ever said a BMW part is a handful of dollars.
Maybe they have big hands?
@WatchJrGo do you remember is there a way to manually release that top latch to drop the endgate. I'd love to rebuild mine but the endgate does not drop only swing out.
I had a similar problem with my Volvo power lock: there was a bit of a short circuit between the 2 pins, so there was not enough voltage to move the motor. The short circuit was coal dust, after a whipe with alcohol, everything workes fine
Love all the detail you provide on this truck. What model Epic scanner are you referring too?
He made a nightmare of a job look easy!
Hey I’m overhauling the engine in my 2000 corolla (rings, rods bearings, head gasket) I snapped a bolt for the piston end cap so I’m replacing all of those bolts do I need to replace the head bolts.
Does the Aurelio typically let you clear SRS/airbag errors? For example if you replaced seats rather than had a collision?
you might actually be able to rebuild that hoverboard if you want since it wasn't the battery lol
I hear so much trains on JR's videos, that I had a though:
a) Trains are the main transport used by automotive OEMs to transport parts and cars
b) JR's shop is right next to that amazing train track
c) There are a lot trains going through there
d) They could arrange an heist (Breaking Bad like), to secure many cars and parts for the shop.
Who would not like to watch such video series?!
FBI, maybe 😁
like these longer detailed vids, i actually learn a lot. preeeesh
Can you make a list of parts needed to fix the tailgate? Because I have GMC envoy and I trying to see what all I need to get the Tailgate fixed and I didn't even know it flipped down.
Loving this rig never heard of it until you posted. Keep up the good work my man!
which model Autel scanner did you use on the Envoy? which is the cheapest Autel that would give the information that your scanner gave you?
I have a 2004 XUV 150250 with the same issue now i know how to fix it my rear gate. I do have a sunroof that is stuck open any ideas on how to fix that.
The sounds effects in this episode are on point.
Time for "Watch JRGo Repair his Powerboard"! Cap replacement is easy!
How did you open the door if the switches didn't work I'm having the same problem
You need to edit in a shot of your t-shirts on the merch store for when you say the line "cool shirts like this".
Great video work, as usual. I am on the edge of my seat with this one.
@@pdennis93 And you can still get one on the Honda Ridgeline, at least in the US market.
@@davidkaminski615 I want to see JR repair a 70s GM clamshell LOL.

@@pdennis93 One handed.
So satisfying to tackle a job like that tailgate 👍
RIP JR's most reliable mode of transportation.
Does this make the hoverboard a hooptie?! I think we all know who needs it now.
Oh my god, that little motor looks like something you would get in a 1970s R.C. car!!!!!
Is there anyway you can maybe do a video on how the window works on the inside mine came off the track and I can't figure out how to put it back on
Nice scanner what model autel you are using
