I just watched a 16 minute rant on gas cans and gas can legislature in the US - and I drive electric and live in Europe. I should probably talk to someone about my algorithm. Here to support JR regardless.
I own 6 of the ones from Rural King and they work great. I use them to store gas during the hurricane season. The tip I have is start pouring and then losen the air valve on the handle as it's pouring or else you will make a mess.
Yep, same here in Australia as Canada🤣 I still have a couple with flexi spout without the stupid internal vent, a vent cap behind the handle, and the spout stores inside the neck of the can after use, with a blanking disc and held on by the spout collar..super easy to use and quick to pour, no spills or leaks out my way🤣
Same here in Norway. Actually surprised the EU hasn't made some stupid regulation on them (yet). They even regulate how curved a cucumber can be to be approved for sale...
Kubota used to sell almost the same exact jug years ago. About the only way to fill a tractor up with a jug without spilling. If you like the VP jugs tractor supply carries a clone for a lot cheaper.
Some people bring souvenirs from Europe. I bought a 10 liter metal Jerry can with a metal filler tube (also known as a “donkey sch…”) it even says Benzin on it in German!
I was wondering while watching this, do you know if Jerry cans are legal to be sold in the US anymore? Given how much regulations had destroyed the usability of regular plastic gas cans and how simple Jerry cans are, I bet they’re not.
@@brian5o The only ones legally sold as gas cans in the US are the Wavian cans with the anti-spill spout (similar type of spout to the ones JR showed on the plastic cans with a spring-loaded valve that opens when you press the can onto the filler), but the can itself is a standard NATO can so it is easy enough to swap a normal (non-US compliant) NATO spout onto it which can be easily purchased separately (which is of course technically not legal if you're actually going to use it for gas).
This is why while visiting Canada I bought 5 gal gas cans. Oddly enough Canada has old school gas cans. Has the screw on the back for venting and a normal old school vent. I live in MI so running over to Canada is easy. If you can go to Canadian tire and get an old school can.
Not everybody drives a truck, those utility jugs do not fit in a trunk standing up. Still use the old school 5 gallon or 2.5 gallon with the flexible spout.
I still have one of the gas cans from your first picture. I wish I had a dozen more. Also if you turn the tube around inserting it in the can and put the cap on top then screw the cover it almost never leaks.
I thought the concern was more emissions-related than safety. Supposedly the amount of unburned hydrocarbons from gas evaporating or spilling from the old style cans was enormous in comparison to tailpipe emissions from cars with modern smog controls.
The vented spout is emission based, however you can thank GW Bush for signing the Children's Gasoline Burn Prevention Act in 2008 that mandates the current safety features. Every approved can sold since 2009 in the US must meet these requirements.
yeah for $50 I'll stick with the metal Eagle can with the built in but remove able funnel or just buy the old style nozzles for $10 from amazon or tractor supply
Yeah, I have four of those and they work pretty well, unless you forget to burp it and there's pressure inside. Then they blow gas everywhere when you first open it. 😆
I use a version of the VP Jug almost everyday. I have agreen one for gas, a yellow one for diesel, and a white one for "other" liquids. I've never had an issue filling or using the jugs. The new style won't work well for lawnmowers or other small-engined pieces of equipment.
In the UK I bought half a dozen ex army Jerry cans with fillers [whangs] 20 years ago and have never had any problem since - your cans in the US look crap !!! The utility cans you show look good but I think proper Jerry cans are the answer but I did use a genuine Jerry can in the US a few years ago and it had a stupid valve on the filler that didn't work !!!
I have had a gas cap like this one but from a no name company for almost 6 years now. Still works great and I only paid like 3 or 4 bucks for it back then.
Nobody forced the manufacturers to design safety cans in the dumbest way possible. Let's make sure we blame the people actually responsible for bad products.
I have quite a few of the old red style gas cans ... Some in 1 Gal size and a couple in 5 Gal size ... A couple of the 1 Gal cans were used for 2 Stroke Gas / Oil mixes for lawn equipment like leaf blower, chainsaw.
I've had those for years. Summit Racing used to sell them. The O-rings get brittle after some time and they start acting like the ones we hate. Still better though because you can buy replacement caps.
I bought nozzle and vent conversion kits from Amazon for all of my red *water cans* so they all pour like the old ones. Haven't had any issues with them blowing open even in the garage in the heat of summer. Also picked up a VP can for my *water* and they are pretty nice.
Yep, this has become a thing! I showed the guy at Napa the other day that everything on their shelf had these warning molded into them! I bought one of the new jugs with the warning and made a fueler for my RC jet recently, and every time I go to the airport to get Jet-A I just cross my fingers nobody reads the fine print molded into the side, so far no issues....
I bought a new 1 gallon gas can for mixed gas a couple of years ago and I couldn't even figure out how to use it at first. Even after I figured out how to use it it was terrible.
Buy pre-mixed fuel in the ratios you need then use the one gallon cans for mixing as needed, remove the cap/nozzle from the 1 gallon can and use a funnel to refill the store bought premixed fuel. They have smaller containers which are easier to control. otherwise get a can in the $20 to $40 range for the smaller size. The smaller Sure-Can while overpriced for the size works well I have the 5 gallon size.
I never had a leak with the old metal gas cans. Those plastic ones don't last more than 3-5 years before something breaks or leaks on them. I don't see how we prevent spills when the new "safer" cans have planned obsolescence built into them that causes them to leak on what I consider a short time line.
With an old Jaguar XJ, it's quite hard to use a gas can and not spill gas everywhere. I have to carry a big funnel, along with a screwdriver to put in the hole of the funnel to open the little flap in the gas filler hole.
Any of the old school gas cans just work. If you have one with the spring click nozzle thing, just put a self tap behind the handle so it can vent. you can get rid of the stupid locking mechanism with a drill..
The best purchase i made this year was spending $40 for one of the battery powered gas can pumps with a flexible hose and a nozzle that even includes auto shutoff. No more fucking with the stupid spouts
My only issue is when filling a car with a flap in the filler neck that needs to be opened to allow gas to flow, it's nice to have a thin spout like on those older cans. That clear hose on the "utility jug" is not fitting down that tiny hole.
I'm so old I remember metal gas cans. I still have one we used for my father's 2 Cycle Lawnboy push mower from the 70's. Hated to mix oil with the gas.
JR, you might consider using one of those 'O' rings/washer that would work on a garden hose. Looks like a standard 3/4" fitting. That might solve your 'leak' issue on the flexible spout😁
This summer, before my Mom got a Ryobi battery powered mower, I had to go to the neighbor's to borrow his spout from an older model gas can to be able to fill her gas mower because the safety spout thing was jacked up and I couldn't get it to work right. Wish I sould have had one of these then.
I’ve spilled more fuel with these mandated gas cans then I ever did with the old school ones. I’ve since replaced all the spouts with regular yellow spouts from Amazon and they included vent caps and a drill bit for adding them. I’ll give one of these a go
The new one with the huge green locking spout isn't much good for an unleaded car, might work for old leaded cars, mowers, tractors etc with a large tank opening. What was wrong the old cans that had a simple spout that stored inside the neck of the can? The spout was held onto or inside the neck of the can by the same open collar cap, with a simple flat cap to seal the collar cap to the rubber seal on the base of the spout? This type also didn't have a stupid internal vent in the spout that never works well, they just had a separate vent cap on the back of the can/handle you'd loosen to let air in. They never leaked, were easy to use and were super fast to pour🤷♂️
I like the No Spill gas can as it works well, and makes fueling my lawnmowers easy. Not as easy to top off the wife's van when she gets a little too low.
with that whole lead in I thought i was about to have my mind blown with something new and exciting... I saw these quite a while back now , they are good BUT the metal can with the funnel built in that you get at tractor supply are better imo
Had a new spill proof sit in my carport no direct sun and it would puff up in the heat of the day and when it cooled at night it would eject gas .two weeks and the one gallon was empty. So safe an spill proof!
That’s actually my favorite of all of the ones I’ve used with the locks. I definitely can understand thick gloves or cold, numb hands make using it difficult, though. I can’t stand the new one with the big, rectangular yellow box handle that you have to yank back to open. I can never get them to work.
Menards sells the flex spout for $5 with two different thread caps. I bought the yellow vent plugs off eBay and drilled a hole for less than $1 That said, these seem really cool!!!
Don't use the spout that came with gas can, have a universal spout found on any roadside, plastic bottle with the bottom cut off. The spout fits almost anything you are filling, and it even makes that gurgling noise when you are close to the top.
Or, just go to the auto parts store and buy the blue "gas" cans that say "water" on the side. Same as the gas cans, just a different color but come with the old style vent and filler neck. Make a stencil that says "GAS" and spray paint that on the side.
I had one of the old school squat metal cans with the old style flex hose etc. You couldn't tip it over and it was easy to use. I recently got one of the cheap battery powered fuel transfer pumps. Seems like a slow but possibly good idea considering how hard it is to hoist those 5 gallon cans up to fill a typical car without making a mess. I usually just use 2 gallon plastic cans now to top up the mower and weed Wacker but I have a 40 volt 20 inch mower now that does fine with plenty of spare batteries for my small yard. It used to take me a couple of hours to mow my almost quarter acre of yard at the old rental with my Snapper gas mower I still have.
Just one warning about filling your car up with a fuel transfer pump- be very careful not to overfill. I have a friend that had a generator full of gas, we live in Florida and this was right after a hurricane, and he used the pump to fill his car and didn’t notice how full it was until it overflowed. The excess fuel backed up into his charcoal canister and damaged it, requiring a new one. Luckily, his car was under warranty but the dealership gave him some trouble covering it at first.
The one I have has a shutoff so supposedly it will shut off before it overflows but I hear you. I haven't used it yet other than to make sure the pump actually runs.
It is SUPER easy to modify these stupid gas can nozzles! Pull the thumb plunger out, remove the spring, and then put the plunger back in and all the way down with a drop of glue. Problem solved. They installed these stupid thumb valves to reduce evaporative emissions. If you put a cap on the nozzle, you solve this problem.
I hate the new gas cans with the green collar and button you have to push... I bought the Yellow spout and vent kit for them on amazon and threw the rest of the other "safety" crap out
Wow, a video that we didn’t know we needed but boy, did we. I think my blood pressure went up as soon as I saw the thumbnail for this. God I absolutely HATE new gas cans. I sure miss the good ol’ days when people had common sense and gas cans were as simple as they should be.
The reason why the Blitz company went out of business lawsuits from people misusing the gas cans and also the state of California has some blame in current gas can design. I have a Sure-Can, newer junk with a replacement spout and vent kit added to todays crappy cheap cans, you just need to drill a hole for the vent and I have the old cans that work. And there's one more premium brand that works alright provided it's a 1+ or 2.5+ can.
Not sure if they have this issue in Canada...it has been a long time since I bought a gas can. However I just solve the problem by having a cheap amazon fuel transfer pump...no lifting the can and no spilling.
I spill more gas with the new stupid cans than I ever did with the cans that actually work correctly,. I bought a kit to convert crappy cans to ones that work correctly.
It had nothing to do with government regulation. It had everything to do with lawsuits. Some moron had a gas can in his garage and tipped it over and burned down his garage. His lawyer argued that the gas came out of the can too fast and if the can was made safer then there would not have been a fire. Gas can company lost. Seems to me that the gas can did its job. It was the user that failed. Why that argument works for Guns but nothing else is something I don't understand. It did some IT consulting for the company that made the cans in Oklahoma. They were driven out of business from frivolous lawsuits by morons that did not know how to store gas cans. This is not so much a problem for me anymore because my last ICE vehicle is on jackstands waiting for an EV conversion and all my lawn equipment is electric.
One has to believe that no one involved in regulating gas cans has ever used one themselves right?
No chance, you don’t have to mow if you don’t have a yard in DC 😂
@@WatchJRGo The ones with yards make enough that they pay a lot of money to a landscaper to take care of their lawn. Do you really think they would get their hands dirty. I mean other than getting their hands dirty from the money they make.

you can just buy the flex tubes and put them onto any new gas can and now you have the same old classic gas can
I think the handle position is the best part and the auto stopping when full
Except no vent means you're gonna have a mess on your hands. And pants. And everything. The combo of tube and vent is what makes things perfect.

NICE JUGS
It can be called a Gas Can in "Mexico", when you are speed testing a vehicle on the road! =)
You've just gotta laugh at this ... California will not allow shipping this product to our address!
Good video, thanks for sharing 👍.
We can blame California for the gas cans. It’s not the spilling they are concerned with but the vapors from the gas
CARB (California) is why the spouts are vented, the no leak is due to GW Bush & Congress in 2008. (Children's Gasoline Burn Prevention Act)
