Hello! I'm afraid that we do not have a tutorial for that, but it's surprisingly easy! All you need to do is begin knitting with the second color, just like you would when knitting stripes. You can see the instructions for the very beginning in our pattern for the Double Knit Blanket: www.purlsoho.com/create/2018/03/07/double-knit-blanket/.
Hello! You will need to use either DPNs or circular needles for double knitting, since the technique requires you to slide your work on some rows. You can learn more about turning vs sliding right here: www.purlsoho.com/create/turn-slide. Hope this helps!
this seems a lot easier than versions where you knit one and purl one with alternating colors - slipping stitches is quicker and you only use one color of yarn at a time
Hi Jill! There are a few different ways we like to begin double knitting. You can either use a long tail tubular cast-on, or you can use a normal long tail cast-on. We explain both methods in our Double Knit Blanket pattern, so I'd recommend giving that a look over, right here: www.purlsoho.com/create/2018/03/07/double-knit-blanket/. Hope this helps!
Hi Karen! We recommend using either a long tail cast-on (www.purlsoho.com/create/long-tail-cast-on/) or a long tail tubular cast-on (www.purlsoho.com/create/long-tail-tubular-cast-on-tutorial/) when beginning your double knitting!
Double Knitting creates a dense fabric, allowing the knitter to pull color for designs forwards or backwards. It's a fun technique that may open a whole new world of creative options for you! Take a look and see what you like about it!
Hi! I'm excited to give this a try, but how do you set it up? Meaning, how do you cast on with this technique? I'm an adventurous newbie knitter... Thanks!
Hi Jessica! We recommend two different ways of casting on to get your double knitting started: either a regular long tail cast-on or a tubular cast-on. You can find instructions for both on our project page for the Double Knit Blanket: www.purlsoho.com/create/2018/03/07/double-knit-blanket/.
We used a basic long tail cast-on to begin our swatch! You use Color A for that, and then you start knitting with Color B on the first row you use it on. I'd recommend following the first few steps shown in this pattern to help get started: www.purlsoho.com/create/2024/03/21/double-knit-blanket-in-new-yarns/
So... what if you are working a double-knit color pattern? Does this working one thread through every other loop still work? Seems like you have to work both thread together there, right?
Got so confused as you refer to the rows differently on the website, where the row 4 here is actually row 2 on the site, and row 1 in the video is row 3 written in the post.
Hello! I can totally see how this discrepancy is confusing, but the stitch pattern will still work either way. Looking at the Set-Up Rows in the Double Knit Blanket pattern (the very first rows you will work after casting on), those match Rows 1 and 2 of the video tutorial. So you will still begin with what's essentially Rows 1 and 2 when you knit the blanket!
Not sure if you’re still monitoring this site. I’m in need of help with tacking. I’m not working my rows as you are. I’m knitting and purling right straight through. Any idea how to tack doing it that way?
Hi Alecia! We'd be happy to help with your project, but it would be easier if we can visualize your work. Would you be able to send a photo to customerservice@purlsoho.com? Then we'll be able to take a look!
Hi Rona! We work the two colors in a slightly different method for this project. You can view the full details by clicking here. Thanks! www.purlsoho.com/create/2018/03/07/double-knit-blanket/
@@PurlSoho This is no help at all. I still can't figure out how to incorporate the 2nd colour. And I just can't read the pattern properly. I'm sorry, but you really need to produce a video that shows your whole method from the beginning. Some of us just aren't as adept as you or can figure it out... Sorry....
Hi Mattea - great question! Row 2 is basically the introduction of Yarn B when you're first beginning. Our video tutorial doesn't demonstrate the cast on process, so it's easily confused! This 4-Row Repeat pattern follows thru all the sliding and turning of the work to incorporate the proper color at the proper time. We have a full pattern written which demonstrate this pattern in greater detail - it can be viewed here: www.purlsoho.com/create/2018/03/07/double-knit-blanket/ We hope this helps - let us know if you have any other questions!
Hello! The tack down rows are equivalent to Rows 1 and 2 in the written pattern (or Rows 3 and 4 in the video). Once you've completed these rows, you'll move on to Rows 3 and 4 in the written pattern (or Rows 1 and 2 in the video).
Hi I have got as far as the double coloured cast on, done the normal thing of carrying the two strands along together but how do you get to the stage where the different coloured strands are an opposite ends of the needle?
Hi Penny - here's a listing of the four row pattern we use for our Double Knit Blanket, at the end of this sequence, your yarn colors should re-allign! Hope this helps and let us know if you have any other questions! Row 1 (RS): Slide work and with Yarn A, *slip 1 with yarn in back, p1, repeat from * to end of row. Row 2 (WS): Turn work and with Yarn B, *slip 1 wyib, p1, repeat from * to end of row. Row 3 (WS): Slide work and with Yarn A, *k1, slip 1 wyif, repeat from * to end of row. Row 4 (RS): Turn work and with Yarn B, *k1, slip 1 wyif, repeat from * to end of row. Repeat Rows 1-4 for a total of 1 inch, ending with Row 4.

I was wondering. I have a project in mind that I want to have this visual result of the stockinette stitch on both sides. I want to use the same color and texture of yarn. Is there a way to track/ manage the yarns as the project goes on?
Hi Mattea - If you're using the same color yarn on both sides, we would suggest working with two balls of yarn and labeling one skein A and the other skein B. Then perhaps leave a stitch marker on the front of your work which matches reads "skein A" so you can keep them separated (at least mentally!) Hopefully that helps!
Hi Koko! Thanks for writing! The full pattern can be found here: www.purlsoho.com/create/2018/03/07/double-knit-blanket/comment-page-1/ And the Bind Off instructions are: BIND OFF Set-Up Row 1 (right side): Slide work and with Yarn A, *k1, slip 1 wyif, repeat from * to end of row. Set-Up Row 2 (wrong side): Turn work and with Yarn A, *k1, slip 1 wyif, repeat from * to end of row. Alternating between needles, slip all the knit stitches onto the working circular needles and all the purl stitches onto spare circular needles. FOR A LONG TAIL TUBULAR CAST ON… Slide work and with right side facing you, use Yarn A to bind off in Kitchener Stitch. IF YOU DID A LONG TAIL CAST ON… With Yarn A and the right side facing you, bind off using a 3-Needle Bind Off. Weave in the ends and block as desired! We hope this helps!
I'm making a collegiate blanket for my boy. The school logo starts quite a ways into to the blanket, maybe 40 rows or so. Is there a way to tack it together while I go and it still remain hidden. I'd like to keep the piece solid til it's time for the logo.
Sounds gorgeous! You may want to consider double knitting with just one color for the first section until you need to add in the additional color. Simply follow the steps with the same color until you're ready to add in the contrast. Happy knitting!
I wish i could watch the cast on... i don't have perfect eyesight, so trying to read the pattern instructions gives me a lot of trouble. Is there any way you could please demo the cast on? Please?? I know you have a cast-on video mentioned below, but i mean, the 2 colour. How do you get 2 colour on 1 needle!?
Hi Alexandra! This technique only uses one color to cast on, then joins the second color in the following steps. So getting two colors onto one needle happens either during the set-up or during the pattern (depending on which method cast on you use.) For this pattern we used a Long Tail Tubular Cast On but you could also use a Long Tail Cast On just as easily. If using the simple Long Tail Cast On (www.purlsoho.com/create/long-tail-cast-on/), cast on using only Yarn A and then you won't join in Yarn B until you get to Row 2 in the pattern - so no need to cast on with two colors - easy! if using the Long Tail Tubular Cast On (www.purlsoho.com/create/long-tail-tubular-cast-on-tutorial/), we used Yarn A for the first set up row and then Yarn B for the second set up row - again only using one color for the initial cast on step. We hope this clarifies the situation!
@@PurlSoho Aargh! That STILL doesn't tell me how to incorporate the second colour! How do you do that - ?! And if I cast on two colours at the same time, that changes the order of the rows, right?
@@alexandraabraham6698 Hi Alexandra - we really hope we can help you with this project and understand how frustrating this is for you! We are deeply sorry that this tutorial hasn't provided you with the instruction you seek. For this particular pattern, the cast on is only done with the first color. Then the second color is added later (after casting on) to work the double knitting. That's not always the case with double knitting, and perhaps that's where the confusion is stemming. This tutorial works in conjunction with our Double Knit Blanket pattern. We would love to help sort this problem out for you, so if you're able, please send us an email at customerservice@purlsoho.com so that our full team can help!

It certainly could, Mary Kay! Doubling Knitting can be used to knit flat (as in this case) or in the round. While we currently have no projects showcasing Double Knitting in the round, a little sleuthing could provide endless possibilities - Happy knitting!
Try this page: Scroll down.... stitchdiva.com/pages/casting-on-binding-off I cast on using the 2nd method ('Cast on using one yarn only') Then cast on the 2nd colour as shown, putting the right-hand needle into the back of the stitch, before incorporating yarn 2, pulling it through and then completing the stitch by passing the remainder from the left-hand needle... For knitting in the round, I would suggest you add one more stitch than you need, then knit that together with the 1st double stitch you cast on, in the round... So for example, if you need something to be 150 double stitches, you add 151 of the 1st colour, incorporate 151 of the second colour, then pass stitch 151 onto the other end, next to stitch number 1, and knit 1 + 151 together... Hark at me, suddenly an expert!

Hello, it's your friendly, local pain in the neck, back again! I stayed up until 01:30am this morning, working all this out (single colour cast-on, adding the 2nd colour, and sorting the row sequences out) because I told myself to "not be such a whining wimp, I have brains, work it out for yourself!" I looked everything up on this page - stitchdiva.com/pages/casting-on-binding-off ...very helpful, and I finally managed to cast on (first in 1 colour and incorporate the 2nd) then knitted... ETA: It's still almost impossible to understand how ROW 1, is begun with yarns at opposite ends... Do you knit one row with colour #2, then begin at the other end, as shown in the video, with colour #1, calling this 2nd row, ROW 1, because the previous row was just a set-up row? Ok, just one (final) question... (Promise!!) If you have to leave the work (I cook as well, ya know!) what is the best way to remember which row you have to do next? (K or P..?) How do you successfully keep track, or do you write it down...? Thank you, and I'm sorry for having been a P.I.T.A!

AND - in response to your last question - I use a paper hang tag with a more-complicated stitch pattern. That way past-me can leave future-me a note saying "Row 1" or "Purling" as a little up-to-date note for where I've left off! @@PurlSoho Thanks so much for this tip... useful for large pieces on high-gauge, in-the-round needles! I put the rubber stop on the end I am going to be knitting next... I then pass the other end of that same pin, through the 2 skeins of yarn, push the other spare pin through them, parallel to the first pin - then put the other stopper on the opposite end of the spare pin, which holds the skeins in place. My only difficulty now is making the edges neat; I tried to find a useful video online, but they all deal with work using both yarns at once. Going to have to put my thinking hat on again! :D

this seems a lot easier than versions where you knit one and purl one with alternating colors - slipping stitches is quicker and you only use one color of yarn at a time
Hi - is there a how to cast on and start a double knitted row? Please can you post a link? Thank you!
Is there a print out for the double knitting instructions

Fantastic video. Thanks
Having trouble with this.... would like to see the cast on
Hi Karen! We recommend using either a long tail cast-on (www.purlsoho.com/create/long-tail-cast-on/) or a long tail tubular cast-on (www.purlsoho.com/create/long-tail-tubular-cast-on-tutorial/) when beginning your double knitting!
Did you cast on in the dark color then add the white!
@@karenkrielow6036 Yes, we cast on with just the dark color first!
What is the purpose of this technique? Just for a 2 sided design so you can have 2 colors to choose from?
Double Knitting creates a dense fabric, allowing the knitter to pull color for designs forwards or backwards. It's a fun technique that may open a whole new world of creative options for you! Take a look and see what you like about it!
@@PurlSoho I'll put that on my 'to try' list!
@@agemoth Lovely! Thanks!
This is incredible. Thank you.
Hi, can you show how you started this project? I'm a beginner and I would love to try this with some Drop Air yarn.
The full pattern with cast on instructions can be found here:

Let us know how we can help!
I don't understand how to cast on so that my working yarns are at alternate ends as yours are when you demonstrating row 1.
Would this work to make a scarf?
Yes, you can absolutely make a double knit scarf!
Why are the yarns at opposite ends to begin. Seems like you skipped a step
Hi Rona! We work the two colors in a slightly different method for this project. You can view the full details by clicking here. Thanks!

@@PurlSoho This is no help at all. I still can't figure out how to incorporate the 2nd colour. And I just can't read the pattern properly. I'm sorry, but you really need to produce a video that shows your whole method from the beginning. Some of us just aren't as adept as you or can figure it out... Sorry....
On the first row how does your second yarn travel down the needle so that when you end the row both the yarns are together and ready to start row two?
Hi Mattea - great question! Row 2 is basically the introduction of Yarn B when you're first beginning. Our video tutorial doesn't demonstrate the cast on process, so it's easily confused! This 4-Row Repeat pattern follows thru all the sliding and turning of the work to incorporate the proper color at the proper time. We have a full pattern written which demonstrate this pattern in greater detail - it can be viewed here:
www.purlsoho.com/create/2018/03/07/double-knit-blanket/
We hope this helps - let us know if you have any other questions!
plz show it from starting.with cast on..plz
So - after you do the tack down row, (which appeares to be row 3) you carry on to row 4 and repeat rows as usual?

Hello how to start or how to caston thank you
Hi Ester! We like to use either a long tail tubular cast-on (omitting the foundation rows) or a regular long tail cast-on to begin double knitting. You can learn more about this and find links to cast-on tutorials on the page for our Double Knit Blanket: www.purlsoho.com/create/2018/03/07/double-knit-blanket/.
Amazing! Ty!
Hello. I hope everyone n everything is good there. This method is the only way I can DK. You mention a set up row after casting on. I assume the set up row is w main color. Wld u share wht stitch/s make up this row. Wht I'm asking is your way of doing this after the cast on to adding 2nd color. How u alternated the stitches. Whew! A bit of over kill explaining to you pros. Apologies.
Hi Sue! Of course, we'd be happy to help. This tutorial relates to our Double Knit Blanket, and the full pattern (with specific details for the cast on) can be viewed here:
www.purlsoho.com/create/2018/03/07/double-knit-blanket/
We hope this helps - and happy knitting!
Then perhaps leave a stitch marker on the front of your work which matches reads "skein A" so you can keep them separated (at least mentally!) Hopefully that helps!
how to finish(close) this knitting??? i mean the last row?
Hi Koko! Thanks for writing! The full pattern can be found here:
www.purlsoho.com/create/2018/03/07/double-knit-blanket/comment-page-1/
And the Bind Off instructions are:
BIND OFF
Set-Up Row 1 (right side): Slide work and with Yarn A, *k1, slip 1 wyif, repeat from * to end of row.
Set-Up Row 2 (wrong side): Turn work and with Yarn A, *k1, slip 1 wyif, repeat from * to end of row.
Alternating between needles, slip all the knit stitches onto the working circular needles and all the purl stitches onto spare circular needles.
FOR A LONG TAIL TUBULAR CAST ON…
Slide work and with right side facing you, use Yarn A to bind off in Kitchener Stitch.
IF YOU DID A LONG TAIL CAST ON…
With Yarn A and the right side facing you, bind off using a 3-Needle Bind Off.
Thank you. 🥰💕💋💐
So getting two colors onto one needle happens either during the set-up or during the pattern (depending on which method cast on you use.)
For this pattern we used a Long Tail Tubular Cast On but you could also use a Long Tail Cast On just as easily.
@@PurlSoho Put a reply above, as another comment. Success! Thank you, I persevered, and sorted it out for myself, because I told myself to stop being a whingeing minnie, and work it out! So I did! Thank you for your patience!
Can this be done in the round? Like making a cowl?
It certainly could, Mary Kay! Doubling Knitting can be used to knit flat (as in this case) or in the round. While we currently have no projects showcasing Double Knitting in the round, a little sleuthing could provide endless possibilities - Happy knitting!
Try this page: Scroll down.... stitchdiva.com/pages/casting-on-binding-off
I cast on using the 2nd method ('Cast on using one yarn only') Then cast on the 2nd colour as shown, putting the right-hand needle into the back of the stitch, before incorporating yarn 2, pulling it through and then completing the stitch by passing the remainder from the left-hand needle...
Alexandra Abraham thank you so much!!
@@maryschluetermeyer4743 I hope it helps and that my explanation is clear! I had to read it 3 times to try to make sure that anyone else reading 📚 it could understand what I meant! 😁

How do you add in skeins?

@@PurlSoho How do you deal with the tails when you can't access the inside of a double knitting project that's has color work?
@@NaturalAegyo We would recommend using a wet splice (aka spit splice) to join yarn skeins together and weave the ends in as you go! If you're using color work or a stranded technique along with a double knitting project, the loose tails can stay tucked inside the work without fear of being pulled in the future. Hope this helps!

that's kool for old wool
can I know the yarn and needles details to start thanks
Thanks for writing in, Puja. The needle show in a US 6 (4.00 mm) and the yarns are our Mulberry Merino and Good Wool and can be purchased here as a bundle for our Double Knit Blanket: www.purlsoho.com/double-knit-blanket-bundle.html Thank you!
Does it come out hollow in the middle?
Yes! You can pull the two sides of fabric apart from each other, like a pillow case.
Hey that's a good idea. I could make pillow cases. Thanks.
Just a note: if you do any color work (as is common with double knitting), it will bind the two sides together. So you wouldn't be able to slip a pillow in.
How are the set up rows completed?

Урок двухцветного двойного вязания
Hello, it's your friendly, local pain in the neck, back again! I stayed up until 01:30am this morning, working all this out (single colour cast-on, adding the 2nd colour, and sorting the row sequences out) because I told myself to "not be such a whining wimp, I have brains, work it out for yourself!" I looked everything up on this page - stitchdiva.com/pages/casting-on-binding-off
...very helpful, and I finally managed to cast on (first in 1 colour and incorporate the 2nd) then knitted...
(Promise!!)
If you have to leave the work (I cook as well, ya know!) what is the best way to remember which row you have to do next? (K or P..?) How do you successfully keep track, or do you write it down...? Thank you, and I'm sorry for having been a P.I.T.A!
Alexandra, your perseverance is a wonderful reminder of the self-sufficiency of knitters! Thank you so much for responding and keeping us updated - we're so glad you sorted this out!! Be sure to check back in with any other questions - and thanks for being such a trooper!
AND - in response to your last question - I use a paper hang tag with a more-complicated stitch pattern. That way past-me can leave future-me a note saying "Row 1" or "Purling" as a little up-to-date note for where I've left off! I usually pick up a bag at a stationary store or the market when I'm running low. (Especially helpful when I'm knitting brioche!) Happy knitting!
@@PurlSoho That's awfully kind and patient of you... I feel a bit like the 3-year-old toddler constantly pulling on her mother's skirt.."Mummy...? Mummy...? Mummy...?" (I've known that feeling myself!
@@PurlSoho Thanks so much for this tip... useful for large pieces on high-gauge, in-the-round needles! I found some rubber stitch savers in my knitting accessories bag - the kind you plug onto the sharp end of a knitting pin to stop the stitches falling off - and as I am using double-ended needles (16" - I knit English style apparently, by tucking the knitting needle under my right arm, so I need long pins...!) I put the rubber stop on the end I am going to be knitting next...
@@alexandraabraham6698 Love this idea! I'll have to try it (English here too!) Thanks for writing!
