    I like your description of 'motif colour' and 'background colour'. I always get confused when I knit the second side because my mind can't seem to make that switch. So when you knit the 'wrong side' do you read the next line from left to right?

    • @thechillydog
      @thechillydog  2 года назад +2

      It depends on the pattern. The motif in the video is symmetrical, so the chart can be read in either direction (I chose to read right to left for all rows). That may not be the case for all double knit motifs and then you would have to read the 'wrong side' rows from left to right.

    Instantly subscribed! I realized now, I had been asking the wrong question all along! I'd been asking how to read a fair isle chart without multiples? 😆🤣 it's been double knitting the whole time! Thank you!

      Now my mind is blown! Does this mean I can adapt any chart to double knitting? Or even crochet?

    • @thechillydog
      @thechillydog  2 года назад

      I think just about any color chart could be adapted to double knitting. You may want to look at charts for cross-stitch too, because they can also usually be adapted. There's lots of cross-over in fiber arts.

    When you cross those color stitches doesn't that mess up the pocket?

  • @cherylfarthing3430
    @cherylfarthing3430 Год назад

    I use both hands to avoid twisting or yarn. How do you manage, I noticed your yarn is not twisted.
    Another question: when reading a chart do we read from right to left alternating? Especially when the chart calls for even numbers and having to balance out stitches.

  • @chrisscranton1211

    Can this pattern be read in the round so every row is read Right to Left avoiding the opposite color reading every other row?

    • @thechillydog
      @thechillydog  3 месяца назад

      This pattern happens to be symmetrical, so every row can be read from right to left. However, the motif color and background color are reversed on each side. That's just what double knitting is. As you're reading the chart you have to be aware that the the dark color yarn is the motif color on one side of your knitting and the background color on the other.

    Hello! I have a quick question, do I have to reposition the yarn for each color switch? I'm a continental knitter and my pattern calls for a color switch every single pair of stitches over 46 stitches for multiple rows in the pattern. Would it be possible to just do color switches by picking up the correct color and not having to move the yarn around? The yarn gets awfully twisted when I keep repositioning it per color change but if I have to, I don't mind doing so! Just hoping it won't make my scarf wonky if I don't.

    • @thechillydog
      @thechillydog  Год назад

      If you are double knitting, you probably do have to reposition the yarns every time you switch which color is the one that's seen on the front of your work. ( I have never figured out a way around this.) One way to avoid the twisty mess is to rotate the yarns clockwise for the first switch then counter cloockwise the next time you switch and continue alternating. Since the switches are sandwiched in between the layers of fabric you'll never see the twists when the piece is complete.

    Question...when you turn to the other side, do you still read the chart right to left? Normally, you reverse it...Thanks! Very clear explanation as I want to try this in the new year!

    • @thechillydog
      @thechillydog  6 месяцев назад +4

      It depends. I specifically designed this scarf with a symmetrical pattern, so you can read it in either direction. If the stitch pattern and/or shaping isn't symmetrical you'd alternate reading r-l for one row then l-r for the next.

    I don't understand. You're knitting on the flat but reading all the rows from right to left. Shouldn't 1 row be right to left then next row left to right and so on and so on?

    • @thechillydog
      @thechillydog  2 года назад +2

      Because this design is vertically symmetrical, the chart is exactly the same whether you read from right to left or left to right. If it wasn't, then yes you would need to read one row right to left and the next left to right.
