    Great video Ross. I think this should be a standard guideline for figs in containers if not all fruit trees. My max container size is also around 14 gallons. I'm not sure how people are growing in anything larger then that size especially when the pot is full of water! Earlier last year I transplanted a 14 gal lemon tree into the soil and that was easily one of most difficult transplantings I've ever done LOL.

    The largest container size I go is 20 gallon. I use a dolly to move trees around.

      @@RossRaddi A thought i had was to take a cutting from a 5yr old tree knowing the tree will sometime outgrow the pot. This could replace the need to root prune. And simply start over. Beautiful thing is figs grow easily.

    Thanks for this video Ross! This was a very good and timely information for me. I just started my fig collection this spring and have about 20 varieties so far. Most of them were grown from cuttings and currently in 1 gal pots. I’m going to up-pot them soon. Will go with 7 gallons and keep them there as long as possible. I don’t have room in the ground anymore, so those pots will be their permanent home.

    Ross, I'm about to buy 50 acres in northern Florida. I plan on having as many different types of figs as possible. I want to create a somewhat sustainable seven-layer food forest with figs and persimmons in abundance. Thanks for all your help. Hopefully you can come visit one day when I get this off the ground and running.

    I have 4" fig seedlings that I'm now growing on in 3 gallon pots. I've had them for about 2 months now and I've been worried that, though small, I haven't given them enough room. So seeing this is really helpful. Thank you.
    Clarifying question: in the video when you say, "This is the final size" for a given container, you mean that the tree you're showing is about the max size it can get for a container of said size, right?

    • @RossRaddi
      @RossRaddi  Год назад +1

      Yes. They won't get much larger than that without serious attention and care.

    I have a dilemma. I am very happy with 10 g Grow bag. Decision is go with 10's. My goal is to go from tree pot straight to final pot.
    As of 2 days ago, I started contemplating my decision. Zone 9B. Planning to leave tree outdoors when winter hits.
    10g is 16" x 12" and a 15g is 19.7" x 11.8"
    I question, "What would Ross do?"
    I know what you would do but you have a different style. You like going doubles on a 15. I was planning to go single. I went outside and did 10 lifts on a 10 g. I still have 4 inches left to fill with compost.
    The 10 g is really nice. The weight is good. The way I imagine a 15 g I measure 2 inches in right and left hand and circle the grow bag.
    Having the option to move a tree is an enormous plus. Like I can move tree 10 feet away to driveway to maximize sun. Huge option to have.
    I can always get a 4 wheel dolly if needed but I rather not. I am 50/50. My gut tells my to consult with the Fig boss. What do you think?
    I hear you saying, "Go for the max, your tree will love you for it." I go fill 10 g with 4 inches of compost and do 10 more lifts. See how it feels.

    • @paulshizzledizzle6180
      @paulshizzledizzle6180 6 месяцев назад

      I just did my 10 lifts. The 10 is really really nice. I like the size and appearance. I also figure you like going doubles in a 15g. Mathematically, one will assume it is 7.5g per plant. In a 10, I am 2.5 over per plant compared to your style per tree. Decisions....Decisions....

    I had a brown turkey in a grow bag 50 gallon and the roots filled out and stuck to the sides of the bag in 1-2 yrs? And it as tiny when I put it in. There was no way it could barely be lifted out I had to cut the bag, planted it in the ground. I don't recommend grow bags
