  • Mikael shows an excerpt of the S03 episode of The Life-Sized City in Barcelona about skateboard urbanism - the importance of integrating skateboarding into the urban design development of public space and to strengthen social inclusion. He interviews SCOB Architects, who specialize in integrating skateboarding facilities into neighbourhoods in Catalonia and beyond using architecture and citizen engagement.
Here's the link to the Life-Sized City podcast episode about Skateboard Urbanism, where Mikael interviews skateboarders in Paris, Copenhagen and then Gustav Eden Svanborg, the skateboard coordinator for the City of Malmö - a city with the declared goal of being the world's most skateboard-friendly city: / word-on-the-street-e02...

You're like the Anthony Bourdain equivalent of urban design.

I think this is a really interesting topic. I loved all action sports or extreme sports as we called them back when I was growing up in the 90s. I recently got back into it more than just watching X-Games twice a year as I have for a long time. I think seeing skateboarding, skating, BMX etc as art is a big part of a real life-sized city. We need to get rid of the cars to give them space to perform and for people to watch and appreciate the skill and artistry.
But the infrastructure needs to be built with action sports in mind. I hate to see ledges and rails scratched up and broken, but they wouldn’t be if they were designed to stand up to grinding bikes and boards on. I think having Skateboarding and BMX freestyle at the Olympics this year will be key in this transition (even if no fans are there in person). Showing people that these are incredibly talented athletes on par with any other sport will help build that respect.

“Skateboarding, Space & The City” by Ian Boarden is a good book on the subject if you’re interested

Until a Dutch broadcaster acquires the series you can use your VPN to go to Canada and watch it there. Belgian VRT have been showing it, but it's geo-blocked, we believe. /TheTeam
