- Let's take a look at several MS66 graded Morgan Dollars so we can get a feel for "The Look" of what separates an MS66 from the rest.
These coins are part of the Morgan collection referenced in a recent video.

Thanks for sharing those beauties.
I got some ms63 and 64, but wow your coins are amazing.
Stunning coins, with the CACs too! niceeeeeeee!
Great video I just started collecting Great info. Oh, love your voice
You have a soothing voice. It relaxes me 🤩
I wouldn’t crack them out. They are gorgeous 😍
Just beautiful just beautiful! I wouldn’t crack any of them out!
Great coins and color!
🔥 Beautiful Just Beautiful🔥
So pretty...Ben that was the nicest group of Morgans you have ever shown in one video...bravo!
Awesome Morgans I’m gonna save some to get that. And thanks a lot for sharing 🤗
Best nine minutes of my Wednesday....
Great Morgans
I bought the 83p and 79s. Some reason nobody bid on them on eBay and they went cheap. Doubled my $ on them a year later when prices spiked. I wish I had kept the 83p though it’s such a beautiful coin
I miss a couple of my coins I sold for a profit. I am going to have to spot selling :)
Thanks! I like checking out Morgans!
What a nice group of gem Morgans! I need my sunglasses! 😎👍
I just sent out my first PCGPS order a few hours ago. A few Peace Dollars a 1928 P. 1928 S VAM 3. 1934 P/D.
Nice!!!
Love them. I hope to get one tonight.
they all look beautiful😊
It's true, graders are so hard on 1881-Ss and so many of them are so gorgeous looking. I don't understand why there's so many coins in such amazing condition but there are. So the graders are stricter with them. But is this right? Isn't the condition the condition regardless of date or mint? They're not grading the date, they're grading the condition. Grade the condition and that way getting a feel for the look of a 66 coin makes sense. This is one of the reasons why it's so hard for collectors to grade coins. It's not the collector's fault when it's inconsistency like this in the market.
Should all dates and mintmarks be graded the same? Great topic.
@@TheCoinGeek A good video idea to hear your thoughts. Thinking on this more, I would say yes in theory, but no in practice. Because I imagine what if the graders suddenly made that change. Or even worse if one grader did it and the rest slowly made the change over a period of years...it would be chaos. It would almost be a demarcation line in history of grading, like BC to AD. But if they could start over and do it all over again I'd say yes, grade on condition. There'd be a lot of MS67/68 1881-Ss out there but I'm sure the marketplace would still be able to price them according to populations. Perhaps a 66 would be somewhere in the $125 range. All the other changes to all the other coins I can't even begin to imagine. ;)
@r parnock Hmm I have a few NGC coins that are "Brilliant Uncirculated" in tougher dates and I'm guessing they're 62-ish. I figured it was cheaper to grade them that way? But I also see your point about the subjectivity and resale...makes sense.
Oh and I took a liking to the lower MS grades too. I guess affordability was the main reason but it's fun to find a really choice 62 or 63. Take care.
@r parnock I speculate a lot of people kept the Morgans out of circulation because they could plainly see they were beautiful. Next to a Peace dollar it's always been a simple matter of "which one would you rather have?" Patriotism and Nationalism were in fashion back in the days so hoarding those BU Peace dollars dad got at the bank 12 years ago may have felt like a sin, whereas Morgans were already tucked away in firmer hands. Pure speculation of course but interesting to ponder.
@r parnock Check out auction "1882 s NGC MS64 JAW DROPPING PL/DMPL OBVERSE MIRRORS MORGAN SILVER DOLLAR #030" on eBay about to end. Sometimes a coin is so sweet it defies its grade.
I will pick the blast white Morgans everytime over the toned Morgans . I have never understood why anyone would pay more for a toned Morgan in M.S. condition over a shiney Blast white M.S. Morgan .
I just couldn't see the 80 over 79. I'm still new to collecting so I haven't devolved an eye for it yet. My favorite is number 3 and 5.
Being an old fashioned grader, I would put them all at MS65 with the exception of the 1885O, which is stunning and the last two, which are possibles. The varieties weren't very obvious. Thanks for the show.
Yes a few of those 66s looked pretty beat up to me. I would not pay 66 price for those.
It would take some massive balls to crack out a Morgan 66
There's just something about the Morgan dollars. Maybe its because the allure of the old west.It might be the most collected coin, along with Lincoln penny, maybe? That would be a good poll
1885O I think should be 67
They have different grading standards, depending on the coin. I have 6 Ike dollars that have less chatter and almost flawless fields than all of those Morgans put together, yet they all came back 66.
I've got the GSA CC 1880 over 79 reverse of 78 I need to get graded but it won't come back a Ms 66 though. Probably a Ms 63. Maybe a Ms 64. I wish it would though. Heck I'd take a Ms 65.
Cracking out a 66 to get a 67 is a 65 waiting to happen :)
Nope. Your coin is a 65+ lol
I know....you are so right!
Comment down below.
I loved the video! I love the toners. Good information.
To the people in the comments, since Ben never seems to reply to comments:
I have a coin in an old ngc holder that is very scratched up (the holder is.) If I send the coin into ngc for regrade can it come back a lower grade? All I want is for it to be put in a new holder
If all you want is a new holder than you would send it in for the ReHolder service. They will not grade it at all -- just reholder the coin. The base fee is $12.00 /per coin. Of course, you will have other fees/shipping charges. NGC will also reholder coins at coins shows where they are grading -- when they start back up. That way you would save on all the shipping costs. Cheers!
Hey - Don is right. I'm sorry I can't reply to all of them.! Thanks.
Thanks Don.
....also...I totally fell for the passive aggressive nature of the comment :)
TheCoinGeek haha! I didn’t mean it to be rude. It’s just something I’ve noticed
Are there any Morgans graded higher than MS66?
Yes I have a couple of Morgans that are MS 67. I am not cracking them out in hopes of getting an MS 68.
Yes, but not in this collection.
The 1885 o should be a MS67
I want to sell my entire collection
If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and quacks likes a duck then NGC and PCGS will still only grade it MS65
Are you saying you’ve never utilized the Reconsideration Service offered by PCGS with the hope of getting a coin such as the Mint State-66 1880/79-S upgraded ? I don't know for sure about the grammar being correct, but yes, I believe you might be crazily considering doing exactly what you said you might or might not have under consideration in the deep recesses of your brain. 🤔😳🤣😂 Thanks !!! - Ben, ”The Coin Geek” 🤓
$66.00 is a fun area to collect ? Oh, now I get what you meant to say: Mint State-66 Silver Dollars are a fun area to collect. I like the very attractively toned 1879-S with the CAC sticker, and the satiny white 1885-O CAC in the old green label holder. Thanks !!!
