Black Sun, Children of Time, Gideon the Ninth, Endymion, and the first three books from The Stormlight Archive is on my list of the best books this year! And I started reading Discworld, and this series is the best thing that happened to me in 2021.

I had a goal this year to read more. As someone who use to be an avid reader, I just haven’t read much the past few years but 2021 has been a really good year for me. I read a lot more this year! So my favorites this year are:
A Little Hatred - Joe Abercrombie
Parable of the Sower - Octavia E Butler
    Nos4a2 - Joe Hill
    The Heir and the Spare
    The Humans - Matt Haig
    The Maze Runner
    Grown
    The Sundown Motel
The Long Walk - Stephen King
Near the Bone - Christina Henry
    Apt Pupil - Stephen King
The Hellbound Heart - Clive Barker
    Dune - Frank Herbert
The Wolves of Calla - Stephen King
    The Push - Ashley Audrian
From your video I’d like to read Kindred in 2022 and I have a goal to read some authors for the first time including Brandon Sanderson.

Sounds like a great reading year for you!! My son is a huge Brandon Sanderson fan and loves the Stormlight Archive series - glad you're enjoying it! He loves The Wheel of Time, too - read the whole series in 2020 - his pandemic project! Oh, and he loves Joe Abercrombie, too! I wrote down The Sword of Kaigen for my son, since you seem to enjoy the same kinds of books - thanks! I've been meaning to read Octavia Butler for years and have Kindred on my Kindle - I plan to read it next month for a local book group. The Girl with the DRagon Tattoo was excellent - the rest of the series is good, too ... though I wouldn't call it cozy! ha ha Parts of it are very graphic. The movies are good too (the original Swedish ones, not the Hollywood versions - they're OK but not as good). Totally agree with A Thousand Splendid Suns and Khaled Hosseini generally - such a great writer! Ha! And my son just started The Rage of Dragons by Evan Winter this week!

A correction: at least in Swedish (the original language) the series is also called Millennium and the first book is called Men who hate women (Män som hatar kvinnor).
And thank you! This gave me motivation to pick up the book, it’s been on my shelf for a while now…

  • @FabTCharie

I read The Parable of the Sower by Butler this year and it cemented her as one of my faves. I had previously read Kindred but I felt such a connection with POTS that I was devastated when it was done and even more so knowing that she was writing a third book in the story before she passed.
Words of Radiance is one of my favorite books I’ve ever read mostly because the character arc of Kaladin was so well written. With 4 books in the series out now, it’s still my favorite out the bunch.

I read Kindred this year too. It was amazing. I struggle with whether or not I should buy a physical copy, because it was hard to read sometimes and I'm not sure I'll revisit it. But I do want it to be part of my collection and want to be able to pull it off a shelf for friends to borrow it.

    • @BookswithEmilyFox

    • @digthewarmth
      @digthewarmth 3 года назад

@@BookswithEmilyFox I agree about the covers lol. They often don't look like sci fi novels, they look like dramas or thrillers, and I probably wouldn't have picked them up if someone had not told me about her. I like the 1999 Patternist series covers, it'd be nice to get a modern update in that vein for all of her books, showing beauty and the "magic".

Given that, my favorites this year are:
    - Skyward - 1st book I finished this year
    - Pride and Prejudice - the only romance & classic of the year
    - Invisible Women - maddening but enlightening
    - Project Hail Mary - I liked it more than The Martian because of the friendship factor

  • @TheObsessiveBookseller

I agree with Sanderson - I don't know how he can deliver several 1000+ page novels without making a single, solitary thing about them boring. And I've even read them a couple times!! I don't reread - too many books to get to. It's astounding. So good.
I'm happy you liked WOT and aren't grouchy at it like I was. I got very fed up with the pacing and how many different fat innkeepers we had to meet. I made it to book 5 before realizing I just couldn't spend any more time on it for now. People kept saying book 5 is awesome "then it gets really tangenty and slow from 6-8." I figured if I was struggling that much at "the good ones" I'd better just leave off there lol.
Sword of Kaigen is on my list too. It caught me off guard how much I ended up loving it. I almost DNFed at 30%.
I love Joe Abercrombie. I can't wait for you to get to Best Served Cold.
Rage of Dragons made my list also - I loved the training sequences and mock battles - so fun! I didn't totally care for where the series might be going based on the ending, so I haven't been in a hurry to get to the next one, but I loved this for what it was.

For the Eye of the World, Mat gets so much better. Just wait to have his POV, really my favorite character ever. The girl who can see glimpse of the future, kind of, is Min and you will definitely see more of her. For the TV show, some aspects are great, some less so. With the first 7 episodes, the part of book 2 we've seen is more something that happens at the beginning of book 2 that is been moved to happen between events of The Eye of the World

Hi! I'm currently reading Six of crows and I feel like it's info-dumping so much. I don't understand the word meanings, so I keep pausing my reading to look up what a word means or who a character is. Should I have read the shadow and bone series first? I was told that Six of Crows was ok to read as a stand-alone.

I read Shadow and Bone before and I feel like I would be very lost without it because of all of the different terms and world building etc

About Sanderson, I’ve read The Final Empire and it became if not my favorite, my second favorite book of all that I’ve read and now I’m extremely scared to read the second one because how good the first was, I’m afraid lol

I am enjoying the TV show well enough ^.^ don't take my word for it, but I don't think they included Book 2 in the first season after all...

It's not one of your best of the year videos if there isn't a book by Becky Chambers. It's one of my faves of the year too and I hope we are both raving about the sequel at the end of 2022!

WoT is my favourite of the year, the second book. I'm finishing the 3rd right now.
I've watched the TV series, it started not too good, then got better by the 3rd episode, but after that it's slowly downhill, by episode 7 (currently latest out) I'm disliking it. Ep 8 will tell if this turns into hatred. It went too far from the book, changed the characters to make them more digestible (sellable), cranked up the romance in it (also for views I'm sure), created new romances too, seems like a romance story by now. They tuned down the fantasy (cause expensive) and world and story (because there is no time left for it after so much romance plots). Some choreography and characters look awkward. Just not good. They changed too much, some they reasoned with not being able to fit that much into a season, but by now that's an excuse and some changes weren't because of that. Such a shame, we were looking forward to it so much...

I’m basically hate watching the series at this point. I’m almost done with book three and I’ve been genuinely shocked by some of the choices they have made, mainly romances they have created, but also the shaming of “the men dirtying the one power” nope, there is definitely two and your half is still fine, clam down.

I never considered myself a book purest in regards to adaptations, like there will always be something left out or done differently. But… I don’t know if the writers of the show read the books, they did a good job adding diversity to the cast but they did some characters dirty like two of the three more prominent characters played by black actors are “the bad guys” … why? They also left out some important characters letter in the story and I’m curious as to how they will write them in when they learned they messed up. They also made the true source one instead of the “female” and “male” half’s and comes off very trying to be woke and shaming men for being dirty.
