The People in the Trees by Hanya Yanagihara - more polarizing than A Little Life but I loved it. Definitely will make you uncomfortable but the writing is exquisite. Try also Shuggie Bain - the ending was heartbreaking..
Two books that I enjoyed a lot recently that you might not have read is The Shadow of the Gods by John Gwynne, which is a new fantasy series published this year inspired by Norse mythology. It's a pretty character driven fantasy story with a good cast and pretty good plot. It has a high rating on goodreads (4.38). I've never read the author before so now I'm curious to read his backlog. The other is The Unseen World by Liz Moore. That was published a few years ago, but it's a historical fiction, family drama with a mystery element surrounding family secrets (it's not a murder mystery). It also has heavy science themes since it takes place I think in the 70s and 80s and the characters are developing AI technology sort of as a precursor to Amazon Alexa.
hi :) I remember seeing "This is how you lose the time war" on your bookshelf . You should read it, it is a story told in letters, so beautiful, so poetic.
The Sword of Kaigen and A Little Life. Dark Matter and Recursion, Flowers for Algernon. Becky Chambers and Brad's on my TBR. The Sparrow next. 90% of what I read is based on your recommendations so..
Well yes, I have read a lot of books that you recommended. I couldnt stop talking about The 7 1/2 deaths of EH for months. But My new fav is The Magic Fish, you need to read it. It’s a graphic novel, but you need to read it. Please please please read it ❤️
Your channel got me back into reading. I actually bought a kobo last year and read the fifth season, three body problem, and red sister based on your recommendations. I ended up reading 25 books in 2020 and I am on track to read 20 books this year. Thank you for always recommending great books!
Recursion is a favorite of mine that I got because of your recommendation. So thank you so much for that! And you know how much I love Brandon Sanderson's books and The Sword of Kaigen! :)
I picked up Dark Matter and Recursion, A Psalm for the wild-built and The Humans because of you! And more books are on my tbr (and some even in my kindle!) Blake Crouch is one of my new favorite authors. I read Kindred last year and I really really loved it. So I recommend it too!
Yes! I found 7 1/2 deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle through you and loved it, even entered and won a goodreads giveaway for Devil and the Dark Water before it came out because I loved his first book so much! Also learned about Matt Haig from you and read Midnight Library. Seven Husbands is on my TBR still but I learned about Taylor Jenkins Reid from you and read and loved Daisy Jones and the Six. Also not mentioned, but VE Schwab! I've only read the first book in Shades of Magic but I LOVED Addie LaRue. Also read a Man Called Ove after your rec. I'm so bad at getting through my TBR but every monthly TBR/wrapup you do I'm adding at least one book to the list... I'll get to them all eventually 😂 In terms of recommendations, I was cheering you on to read Mistborn back in the day and you've read Kite Runner so you've hit my top picks, I do recommend And the Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini too though, I enjoyed it more than Splendid Suns (but the latter was hard for me to read). I recommend Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro if you're in the mood for a character driven book, he's one of my favorite authors and he tends to write kinda "slow burn" books with really great endings.
OMG flowers for Algernon!!!! How could I have forgotten that this was one of your recommendations!!! I LOVE THIS SO MUCH! I've never cried so much in my life lol thanks for the incredible book recommendations.
I picked up Becky Chambers, Brandon Sanderson, and Sylvain Neuvel because of you and absolutely adored them all! Thank you for always giving us such iconic recommendations, we love youuuuuu 😭❤️
becky chambers was the most recent author who made me feel like I was enveloped in a blanket. because of your recommendation I’ve had “the long way to a small angry planet” on my shelf for over 2 years. I actually only ended up reading it after I picked “to be taught if fortunate” up and loved it. I can’t tell you how angry I was at myself for not prioritizing it sooner. a lesson in always reading the books on your shelf I guess
I absolutely adored The Midnight Library! I can't wait to read The Humans. I'm saving it because I think I'll really love it. I'm definitely interested in reading Flowers for Algernon now too ☺
Read the following based on your recommendation and loved! Dark Matter, Recursion, Kindred, The Human (great on audio). Looking forward to trying more! Thanks for taking the time to expand my reading horizons!
Oh I’ve read so much because of your recommendations! Recursion from Blake crouch, Brandon Sanderson in general, kindred and so much more I can’t think of right now. I really love your channel and all of the books you recommend
Ngl you are one of only 2-3 Booktubers i trust with recommendations. I like thay you are not afraid to tell the truth about bad books and are not bound to some publishing house to promote their stuff. Definitely gonna pick some of these up.
Emily, because of you I also read Flowers of Algernon early last year. I cried like a baby but I loved it. I’m also an Octavia Butler fan and have been working my way through her books since 2019. And although every fantasy lover knows about the Wheel of Time, I’m currently reading book 1 because of your recent review. Thanks for all the great recommendations!
Yes yes yes, loved seven deaths of evelyn hardcastel, seven husbands of evelyn hugo, blake crouch and midnight library and all because of your recommendations!
The best books I've read by your recommendation are DEFINITELY The Poppy War and To Be Taught If Fortunate. They're my favorite fantasy and sci-fi book respectively
You introduced me to soo many great authors over the years. But mainly Brando Sando and Becky Chambers and OH MY, am I forever grateful for that. 💜 What also amazed me is that I read almost every single book shown in this video (apart from A Little Life, sorry, I just can't). If that isn't a good sign. Please never stop reading and recommending books
I read most book you recomend :) because we have similar style and dislikes.. Dark matter and Pines was great and you got me to read Skyward, 7.5 deaths of E.H and so on :) thank you for making great content
Brandon Sanderson and sci fi in general brought me to your channel :D A few new favorites I did find from you: Matt Haig, Becky Chambers, Children of Time, Invisible Women, Kindred (but oddly at the same time as Merphy Napier :)), and the Sword of Kaigen is on my books-to-buy list! :D
I read Children of Time because you recommended it and the series became one of my favourite ever. Did not have luck with The Humans though. Loved the Hardcastle one, but more the journey, not the end.
I'm not a huge scifi reader but I did jump into the genre because of your suggestions. I've read To Be Taught If Fortunate and The Long Way to A Small, Angry Planet both by Becky Chambers this year. Looking forward to your other suggestions. On the side I also read The Poppy War Series because of you and it's the best thing that I've done this year (The book broke me 😂)
I picked up Brandon Sanderson and Becky Chambers because of you and i'm glad. Loved them, gonna read all. The sword of Kaigen is in my list but still haven't got to it yet. The others you talked about are all in my list to read (except Little Life because i think is to sad i don't want that right now). I find it weird you never tried Terry Pratchet but his Discworld books. I love them, so funny
I read and really enjoyed Children of Time after hearing about it on your channel! My dad ended up reading it too and also loved it. Always lots of fun to share books with people 📚📖 Also read Recursion and need to read more Blake Crouch now too :)
I definitely picked up The Humans because of you and have now read all of Matt Haig’s fiction I believe. I definitely did start The Midnight Library too late at night and gave the same warning to my partner when telling him to read it 😂. I need to give Becky Chambers another shot. I tried one of her books when I was slumpy and ended up putting it down after a chapter since I needed something pew pew space opera-y to get me back into reading. Her writing was fantastic though so maybe this fall I’ll have better luck.
You explain books so well, at first I never had any intention to read de midnight library but you explained it so simple and good. That I am going to read it. I also love that you don’t pick overhyped books. Love it!🥰
I picked up recursion, seven and a half deaths, and the three body problem based on your recommendations and hadn’t seen them talked about on other channels. Loved them all. I have Sword of Kaiden on audible. I just need to start it. Problem is I prioritize library books. Oh and I also read skyward because you raved about it and I really like the series.
I heard about Murderbot on your channel and now it's my all time favorite. I love Becky Chambers, she really writes comfort books. Almost all the books you named are on my TBR. 😂
here i am the person in the comments saying they didn’t like flowers for algernon! i think i was maybe in the wrong headspace while reading it (cuz i was feeling slumpy at the time) will be giving it another chance! my favorite book that you have recommended is the sparrow by mary doria russell. absolutely broke me wow.
This video is a reminder of all the books that I added to my list still waiting for me to read I mean besides the ones that I read and made me decide this is where I get good and different recommendations from.
I had heard a lot of great things about The Sword of Kaigen, but I kept putting it off until you recommended it. I finally picked it up and finished it this month and it's easily a new fav.
Currently reading the dark forrest because of your recommandations, so good ! I would recommand Bernard Werbert as an light sci-fi author, the ant trilogy is super interesting !
I didn’t realise you loved Flowers For Algernon, it’s one of my favourite books. I’d highly recommend Bewilderment by Richard Powers, it’s got a similar premise and even mentions FFA in it
"To be taught if fortunate"! Picked it up thanks to you and LOVED IT. But read it as my first Becky Chambers' book and then was disappointed by "Long way to a small...", because I wanted it to be more like the novella 😅
I have created a new book category:space cozy. Definitely Becky Chambers. I also feel like The Lady Astronaut series also fits this category. What are some other books that are “space cozies”?
Yupp, I have read ALL the books Emily mentioned here(except Flowers for Algernon), and to nobody's surprise, I loved all of them. Thanks Emily for always letting us steal books from your favs :P
I am reading jade city because of your recommendation. I highly recommend a discovery of witches if your a fan of historical fiction and mystery as well as paranormal romance
i was one of those kids that had to read it for summer reading when I was 12 and I didn't finish it. I picked it up a year or two ago and I was amazed that with some of the content in there that it was required reading.
I thought the seven deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle had a really great premise that unfortunately wasn’t handled well. I would have loved to read the story from the beginning of the character’s story or from the point of view of the plague doctor. Will put some of your recommendations on my wish list.
A lot of your recommendations I've already read because we have such similar taste! But whenever you talk about them (like Becky Chambers!) I get warm wholesome fuzzies because I go "yay I've read that!" and I completely agree with you. :D
I bought Recursion because of your reviews and it was a 5 stars so yeah i will probably read Dark Matter too I approve Flower for algernon I have yet to read some Brandon Sanderson but i have 5 of his books on my shelf :P I have to read some Matt Haig to, my boyfriend has The midnight library (i gift him the book so i could read it too)
I’ve read so much because of you I just realised 😂 Children of Time, Kindred, Three Body Problem, I’m currently reading the first book in the Wheel of Time series! I also have Dark Matter and some Becky Chambers books purchased but yet to read! But I’m excited! I actually didn’t like A Little Life at all mainly cos I just didn’t feel anything 😆 But I’m intrigued by The Sparrow! It sounds so good!
Loved this video 🧡 Dark Matter was sadly only meh for me because after watching Dark on Netflix nothing can shock me anymore. I recommend watching this show if you like Dark Matter! I also read Evelyn Hardcastle because of you! While I only gave it 3 stars because of the twist I'm still hooked on this author 😊
Read the kite runners because of you and I’m kinda love and hate you for that 😂🥲, this book destroyed me in so many ways, omg I couldn’t read it straight, I needed so many breaks between!!! But glad I made it through
Dark MAtter was so good! I loved it and want to read more of his books. I actually watched the Wayward Pines show before knowing it was a book and I need to get to the books.
I just read The Humans because of your recommendation and I loved it! I read it in one sitting and it's become one of my favorite books. Thank you. You should read The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov. It's a Russian classic but it's so fun. It's about the Devil causing havoc in Russia and there's a talking cat. Sorry that's a horrible summary but it's late and I'm tired.
You need to read Stars Uncharted by S. K. Dunstall and its sequal Stars Beyond. The audio book is read by Emily Woo Zeller who is my favorite narrator personally.
I hated Flowers for Algernon... because of how much it broke my heart 💔 but that's an excellent recommendation for pretty much anyone! All your recommendations have yet to steer me wrong!
I've seen Booktubers try to give a short summary of Dark Matter and I cry a little inside because they always say too much. Also, I read The Humans because of you, and passed it along to a friend. We both loved it! (My friend, especially, because she has a master's in mathematics.)
I discovered Matt Haig through your channel. And after watching your vlog I know I can’t read A Little Life. The only book you mentioned in this video I gave one star (would have given zero if possible) was Evelyn Hardcastle. Oh my goodness I stuck with it but i regret it. Sigh.
I started Flowers for Algernon almost two years ago but only got like 70% in then I got into a huge slump until last month.. now I’m scared to finish it cause I already cried and I know I’ll cry even more at the end
I don't have one exactly with that topic yet but I did do some about books that while they didn't get 5 stars, they still might be worth the read ruclips.net/video/tZLfE42OZAU/видео.html
i thought i would love black crouch and becky chambers but i just didn't like how the synopsis and the actual book felt like two completely different stories, but i'm very excited to read children of time!
Books I read because of you are: The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August, which I loved; Dark Matter, which I almost DNFed because the mediocre writing kept bouncing me out of the story, but I’m glad I finished it cause I did enjoy it; The Humans, which I enjoyed.
So many books that you recommended, I put on my TBR but didn't read yet. (Many I've read too, like my entry for Seven Death :P) PPS: Funny, your youtube is in French ;) (Il y a 5 jours)
Yup, I'm one of the people who didn't like Flowers for Algernon. 😁 I hated it. I thought it was so badly executed. It is one of my DNFs and I rarely put a book down...
Can't say I like Blake Crouch (I actually found the story predictable in Dark Matter and the characters really flat), but I really enjoyed The Midnight Library and I was with you when you first started talking about The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle (I had loved reading it, so was happy to see someone promoting it). I am curious, though, if you have read Adrian Tchaikovsky's recent novella, One Day All of This Will Be Yours? If you have, is it similar in writing style to Children of Time?
I haven't! So far I've read Children of Time (and the sequel!), Walking to Aldebaran, Redemption's Blade and I started Firewalkers... He has so many books though it will be impossible to read them all XD
I also read the sword of kaigen because of you i really liked it,what I just dont get and didnt like at all was the way.... that one of the male characters changed so ... drastically at the end. it just bugs me so much. XD but it was still very good, anyway ... anyone similar feelings on that one= i feel like no one is surprised he changed like 180
Agreed! I felt the same! The sharing of his childhood felt natural but the shift in his personality suddenly that too so opposite is something that felt forced! Other than that loved Misaki inner conversation, wondering, arc etc. she was a great consistent character who managed to evolve as well ☺️
When I read Flowers for Algernon in school, it was not the full length book. I think that only certain sections were pulled and it gets presented as a short story.
Blake Crouch, Becky Chambers, The Sword of Kaigen, … I’ve been following you for years and read tons of books because of you. 🤩 Can’t recommend you my favourite… It’s pure romance and you’d hate it 😂
Poppy war is the one you made me buy and read and love. Also SPOILER !!! You convinced me to read the last book even though I hate and i mean hate when the author kills the main character.
Is Warbreaker a standalone? Or a part of a series? The only books I've read from Brandon Sanderson is the Mistborn Series. Do I need to read more books from him so I can read Warbreaker?
I really enjoyed reading the seven deaths of Evelyn Hardcalstle and I can understand why people don't like the ending but I think that story was never about the ending it was more about Aiden's journey
Read The Humans and The Midnight Library on your recommendation. Did you DNF Project Hail Mary? Because I just finished it and I ADORED it! My favorite book of the year so far! I think you should give it another shot. 💙
Your turn! What's one of your favorite book you want me to read?
After much consideration I have decided to recommend On the Beach.
Hi! I'd recommend Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982 by Cho Nam Joo ^^ It's short and impactful
hi :) I remember seeing "This is how you lose the time war" on your bookshelf . You should read it, it is a story told in letters, so beautiful, so poetic.
aww i’m gonna miss the old music. i was legit dancing every time i heard “i can hear those butterflies” 🦋
I miss it too lol A few people mentioned it kept getting stuck in their head so I'm going to try and find another one
Did I mention your favorite recommendation?
How about Harry Potter
YES!
The Sword of Kaigen and A Little Life. Dark Matter and Recursion, Flowers for Algernon. Becky Chambers and Brad's on my TBR. The Sparrow next. 90% of what I read is based on your recommendations so..

You were totally the kick in the butt for me to pick of The Sword of Kaigen!
I could not get into recursion, I really wanted to but just could not
Dark Matter is easier to start with if you want to give him another chance!
@@BookswithEmilyFox I'm just happy that you ended up loving it so much, too! :)
I picked up Dark Matter and Recursion, A Psalm for the wild-built and The Humans because of you! And more books are on my tbr (and some even in my kindle!) Blake Crouch is one of my new favorite authors.

Subscribed to see your Brandon Sanderson guide 😁 I read Mistborn last week and i loved it so excited to read the rest of his books
OMG flowers for Algernon!!!! How could I have forgotten that this was one of your recommendations!!! I LOVE THIS SO MUCH! I've never cried so much in my life lol thanks for the incredible book recommendations.

I have just finished audiobook The Sword of Kaigen, based on your recommendations, and holly gods of writing was that good! My new fav! Thank you
I absolutely adored The Midnight Library! I can't wait to read The Humans. I'm saving it because I think I'll really love it. I'm definitely interested in reading Flowers for Algernon now too ☺

I read Flower for Algernon in 9th grade! Crazy! I still remember the feeling I got reading it. I should pick it up again MANY years later.
Picked up To Be Taught If Fortunate last month on your recommendation and loved it! Need more Becky Chambers in my life now

From all the books you mentioned, there were only 4 that I haven't added to my tbr or already read. Thank you Emily! 💜
Dark Matter and Recursion were the perfect Christmas gifts for my dad last year!
Did he like them? I'm happy other dads are reading them XD

OMG, Dark Matter is so much better, imo, than Recursion.
@@aliciaohara8794 Oh good to know ! 😍
Loved this video 🧡
Dark Matter was sadly only meh for me because after watching Dark on Netflix nothing can shock me anymore.
Flowers for Algernon is one of the best books I've read in my life. And I really read a lot, I swear. It gets me every time.
I read Flowers for Algernon because of you. Loved it so much, made me sob badly 😅😅😅
You need to read Stars Uncharted by S. K. Dunstall and its sequal Stars Beyond. The audio book is read by Emily Woo Zeller who is my favorite narrator personally.
i'm gonna make this video my tbr, crossing off a little life!!
I would love an “intermediate” sci-fi video 😍😍
I had just started The Sparrow, based off your rec, then this vid pops up! (I'm 20% in and hooked btw)
Yayyyy!!
I pick up the Becky chamber because of you. Thank u em.❤️
Love your book reccs!!
To Be Taught If Fortunate was my first 5 star book this year, I read it based on your recommendation.
Girl your best recommendation was The Female of the Species by Mindy McGinnis.
Lol, I started Brandon Sanderson with
Steelheart (I loved it!)
Read Replay by Ken Grimwood if you're looking for something comparable to Blake Crouch!
OMG. THANK YOU. I’ll definitely check it out. I’ve been waiting for a recommendation like that 🤩.
Yes I loved that book!
Yeah Blake Crouch books need to come with the smallest amount of info... if you know about the twists/topic it ruins the enjoyment
@@BookswithEmilyFox Exactly! 😂 I need a new book from him yesterday...
My favorite that I read because of you is The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle! So unique and great
I read Flowers for Algernon in middle school. I still think about it. I cried so hard while reading it
Flowers for algernon really messed me up but it was so worth it
I discovered Matt Haig through your channel. And after watching your vlog I know I can’t read A Little Life. The only book you mentioned in this video I gave one star (would have given zero if possible) was Evelyn Hardcastle. Oh my goodness I stuck with it but i regret it. Sigh.
Currently reading Spin and LOVING IT!🔥💥🤯
Oh yes! I need to check out Spin. I got it after seeing her review but still haven't read it. That one is next!
Blake crouch needs to write more books, I love his novels ❤❤
I started Flowers for Algernon almost two years ago but only got like 70% in then I got into a huge slump until last month.. now I’m scared to finish it cause I already cried and I know I’ll cry even more at the end
Please do a video about unique premises!
A Little Life and The Sword of Kaigen are the BEST by far. Time to read The Sparrow.
(Many I've read too, like my entry for Seven Death :P)
PPS: Funny, your youtube is in French ;) (Il y a 5 jours)
I keep changing it for English and it switches back so I give up lol
I also read the sword of kaigen because of you
i really liked it,what I just dont get and didnt like at all was the way.... that one of the male characters changed so ... drastically at the end. it just bugs me so much. XD but it was still very good, anyway ... anyone similar feelings on that one= i feel like no one is surprised he changed like 180
Agreed! I felt the same! The sharing of his childhood felt natural but the shift in his personality suddenly that too so opposite is something that felt forced! Other than that loved Misaki inner conversation, wondering, arc etc. she was a great consistent character who managed to evolve as well ☺️
@@Rekindling_reading THANK YOU
When I read Flowers for Algernon in school, it was not the full length book. I think that only certain sections were pulled and it gets presented as a short story.
IIRC, it's the other way around, it was originally a short story that got turned into a full-length novel.
@@sveths You're probably right! That makes more sense, anyway!
This is because initially, the author wrote a short story, which was published in the F&SF magazine, and then he rewrote it into a full-fledged novel.
the sparrow is like a little life only sci-fi?! count me in!
Blake Crouch, Becky Chambers, The Sword of Kaigen, … I’ve been following you for years and read tons of books because of you. 🤩 Can’t recommend you my favourite… It’s pure romance and you’d hate it 😂
Hahaha that’s fair 😂
I loved parts of it but not others :/
