As I have almost no toys from childhood and just my adult collection, I'm fine with my toys being dispersed however my family sees fit. Sell them off? Donate? Give away? Any of that would be fine. I collect for the thrill and fun of it. I imagine the same will happen to my record collection, tapes, CDs, guitars, and so on. Ultimately I don't want to be remembered for the things I owned, and I don't want what I owned to be a burden on others when I'm gone.

I feel you. I have made arrangements for my nephew to take the majority of my collectables. I hope that he will enjoy them as much as I do. You should collect what you love not for the value. The value should just be an after thought. Sorry to hear about your father but he was smart with what he did. At least he had the fore knowledge to make those actions.

  • @brianartillery

Interesting video, Dave. Like you, I collect because I like things, not because of their value. I have already had the question from my nephew: "Uncle, when you die, can I have...?" Something he'd seen in the loft. I like the idea of it going to be sold for charity, but some expensive bits are earmarked for a couple of good friends. I'm amused by the thought of people digging through my stuff, finding something, and going: "What the hell?"

I find it very strange why people ask that question...it is satisfying to know, as you live each day, you appreciate your collection more and more...too have your childhood back makes us feel young again...im a 44 year old that loves to collect star wars (vintage), mego figures, etc...to ask what you do with your toys when you die, is really not anybodys business...at all...

Brent Morrison Excuse my question, but the Mego figures..are they $$$ or reasonable? I’ve got the ST line and the bridge, but really want at least the “World’s Greatest Superheroes” figures I had as a kid again.

I would purously sneek a load of repro stuff to charity shops over my life of collecting. That should irk the elitist who's only real concern is repair jobs not sullying their precious hobby. The thing they fail to appreciate is they're dying at the same rate as those that purchase to repair. So half repro repaired figures aren't realy going to matter to them by the time they're out there to matter.

I’ve been thinking about this sort of thing for a while myself, especially since my mother passed away and I watched as relatives swooped in and tried to decide who gets what, and why. My son *loves* SW, ST, DW and the MCU. I’ve been collecting comics and figures for years, so I asked him if he’d like my collection at some point in the far distant future (I hope), and he replied “Dad, you know I don’t read” meaning after high school, he was done with it lol.

I think it is best if they go to someone who would enjoy and appreciate these toys. Not someone looking to sell them for money. I feel like "they are toys therefore they should be played with and loved." Their boxes should also be appreciated since they are part of the toy. I think there is a special feeling when someone opens up a box knowing or not knowing of the condition of the toy they are opening. The anticipation of opening the toy box is like a special moment. Great collection!

When I pass, at this point in time I don't know if my 1 year olds will get interested in my collection. I already told my wife she can auction it off locally at an auction house to get some money back out of it and use that for her and the children their needs. Family comes first.

Sir, I must say I have had the same thoughts for quite a bit now, considering we are from about the same generation. My collection is considerably smaller than yours, but there is, for instance, one item which has been with me since 1982, which amounts to over 40 years. It is a space adventure Gi Joe, licenced in Brazil as "Falcon", given to me as a gift then. I lost track of it when I left my parents' home in the 90's and found it again in 2005 in pieces since some visiting children from my family got their hands on it. It was at this point I began to learn how to restore Gi Joes and was able to bring it back to its glory in a period of about two years research and work. I am so connected to it and to the person who gave it to me back then, who by the way, has already passed away. I just wanted to feel that this should be preserved somehow because it is so meaningful to me.
Thank you for sharing so much.

Is a sad thing to think about. Terrible most people who ask are concerned about the Repros rather than you. My guess would be would be to try to give loved ones some insight info on value and rareness of the items. People who have never collected before or haven't any experience with collecting aren't going to know the difference between a Yak Face or Klaatu. If they sell items once you're gone and they have a bit of knowledge and will get a reasonable price for things.

I'm sure there is some very clever person who has come up with "the Stages of a Toy Collector's Life"( and most likely it follows any other "Wanting, Aquisition and Selling/Gifting formula.) Since I am of the age group that saw the original Star Wars in theaters...I am approaching whatever the last quarter of it is now. With that in mind, a plan is always a good idea. When a toy or groups of toys have dulled a bit in your eyes, perhaps it is time to seek out someone who is truly longing for them... right now...and workout a great deal with them. Try to remember when you were just getting into true collecting...you just wished there was an older, wiser collector who was willing to help you complete a collection of those hard to find treasures. Now at this stage of my Collecting...I already have a few younger, yet eager collectors that I can help. My wife would not be in that position if I were suddenly taken to the Heaven. Kindness now...never a bad thing! PS My Buzz and Woody...they will go to my kids! TOY ON!

We all collected our own things Toys for me , tools for dad , family photos and ornaments for mum and trying to thin things out is SO hard! As a kid I told my mum to bury my Star Wars figures with me if I died. As an adult , I'd need a crypt for all of them now! While this question is very morbid and quite deep, it is good to think about your wishes before you are gone, honestly giving out your toy collection to other enthusiasts or charity is your best solution in my opinion, it'd be a shame for all this collection and effort to go to waste
I myself collect alot of horsey stuff and other bits related to my hobbies and interests, about a year ago I had collected old vintage computers ranging from Commodores and Tandys to IBM and Apple and other brands who made tech in the 70s 80s and 90s. I ran out of space though after a few months and decided to give out my collection to other enthusiasts who have since used them for documentaries and videos alike
But whatever happens I hope your collection is safe, your own safety is important too

This is a genuinely interesting and challenging topic. Both my daughters have little interest in my few collections and hobbies, but I have draughted up a rudimentary will with instructions for the distribution of belongings as well as nominated people I would like certain items to be entrusted to. This by no means a fully legally savvy document immune from dispute, but should at least serve as a basis for a "set of wishes". Always planning for the worst and hoping for the best.

I'm sorry to learn about your father. This is not a fun topic, but it's one that I too consider from time to time. I already try downsizing from time to time but that only gets me so far. I still have a huge collection. I think the main thing is keeping it in check so that it does not get out of hand for once that time ultimately comes. My thinking is that one day I will part with most of what I have and only keep the things that make me happiest. That way if the time comes where the collection passes to someone else to deal with it will be more manageable for them. Even if friends or relatives don't want it, I have to imagine younger collectors might. Or museums or charities that can do some good with it.

This was a bit of a depressing video but you did address something very important in regards to ones toy collection. The mere thought of your amazing collection finding its way to a landfill is depressing and horrifying. I would hope that someone in your family gets the opportunity to inherit your collection to cherish and enjoy the way you did or at the very least someone in general who appreciates toys who might not be related. Whatever the case might be I just hope that they don’t end up in the garbage. That’s just too sad of a thought. Speaking on this subject, I never put any thought in the idea of what will happen to my toy collection once I’m gone. This is something that all collectors need to consider as we all get older. Like you I need to devise a plan as to who receives and inherits my collection when I pass away. As depressing as this video was it opened my eyes to the idea of coming up with a toy-will. As always I look forward to seeing your next video! Cheers!

Fair point about collectibles being worth a hell of a lot less once the fanbase who collected them starts dropping off. I'm a bit of a games collector myself and the games I'm nostalgic for will only hold their value amoung the age group that grew up on them. You only have to look at the majority of the atari vcs carts to realise there's no real collector value compared to the generation of games that came after them. And even the prices on those are slowly starting to come down to make way for latter gen systems. Best way to maintain a value as a nest egg is to pick up the items that are popular with kids today or a generation prior to those are going to be the hot nostalgia items that future generations are going to want to claw back (also useful that current used value is low due to those that will eventually have nostalgia for them aren't at the mid life crisis stage where they feel they have to get it back lol) . I honestly wouldn't mind seeing some restoration vids on newer toys. Hell it would give me tips on how to repair the load of paw patrol and pj masks that my destructive kids seem to ruin lol. I picked up a gen 1 buzz lightyear with the intent of repairing it after seeing Eliot at the retro future (excellent channel deffo worth a look) repair the wing deployment. I think I could do better than superglue and baking powder though.

Man I’m only 16 right now and I have been collecting hot wheels since I was 9 years old and have over 500+ cars and I ask myself that a lot, I also have lost of Levi sets and I ask myself if I die tomorrow do I leave them to my younger cousins do my parents sell them on. I’m glad to hear that in your case you want to make sure they will be cared for in a collection or a child that will enjoy them as you once did at their age.

I’m sorry to hear about your Dad, my Dad passed away three weeks ago and all doe he wasn’t completely behind me collecting at one point he did asked me what would happen to my collection if something happened to me, since I don’t have kids and the closest I have to a daughter is my niece and she doesn’t want my collection I think I just might go your way and donate it...I would prefer if someone who really values it would have it, I thought about selling it and leave the money to my niece but...I’d be missing on my collection before leaving this world...I don’t know what I’ll do 😕

Interesting video, I wonder what I should do with all my diecasts (I have over 1500 cars), I think I should make some kind of plan, I'm 55 now, no idea when the grim reaper will come. The collection has more emotional value than monetary value, so I might sell off/give away those cars I'm less emotionally attached to. It would be nice if I could get the collection down to a level where I can comfortably display all the cars (maybe 500). But I have a tendency to be adding new pieces, when I venture out browsing markets and secondhand shops....collectors can be terrible hoarders....

My Son never got into all the stuff i collected for him over the years since he was born to when he could play with them. He had his own interests and it was sad to just have to give away a lot of it to other family members. Well it wasn't sad... I'm sure they got plenty of happy use out of it, but there is something disappointing about not being able to share the same things I got so much happiness from with my kid. Here's something though. If things like this are kept as kinds of heirlooms, maybe a generation of nephews may really get a kick out of it ?

I wonder what a good predictor of the value of Gen X toys in the future will be. Would toys from the 40s, 50s, 60s be a good indicator?

Ok. Death related question for you Dave as that’s what the video is about. Just for fun, if you could choose any toy to base a coffin on what would it be? Just thinking it would be a fitting way for a toy collector to head to the other side.
I’d prob have to choose a thundertank or some type of x wing based coffin I reckon.

I have been collecting much longer than Toy Polloi. I am starting to divest myself of my collection, which is extensive. It is absolutely NOT FAIR to burden your loved ones with what is, in the end, to 99% of the population, a bunch of junk. They have neither the expertise nor the desire to to research out what is real, and what is fake, and with TPs collection that will be a huge problem. If some of that stuff gets passed off as original then your loved ones will be dealing with that backlash as well. We should not put our loved ones in a position to try and deal with our mess. Enjoy your stuff, but get rid of it before it becomes somebody else’s nightmare. If I was Mrs Toy Polloi the whole lot would go to the local charity shop when the time comes.

I wouldn't worry about those Star Wars toy collectors who might worry about your restored toys, because they're most likely your age too, Dave, and by the time you pass on (which I hope will be many, many years from now), they probably won't even have their collections any more, having cashed-in on them. I don't think that the type of collector who worries about monetary value has the same level of attachment to toys as collectors who just collect for the love of toys, so--yeah. Don't lose any sleep over it at all. They only care about their investment, and that far down the road, the will have sold their figures and toys, or will be too old to care anymore anyway.

This isn't to do with toys but it is to do with collections. My uncle was the recipient of all the uniforms, medals and decommissioned weapons from my great grandfather and my grandfather's war effort. I always loved collecting militaria but never had the chance to own something as significant. I hope that whoever receives these toys afterwards understands who it was who owned them previous and the story behind them
