nathan was only a fling, deluca was the only real relationship she had after derek did and everbody even deluca knew meredith would not love somebody so much like she loved derek. arizona said it right as she said: 'meredith likes you, really likes you? i am suprised she would ever like somebody after derek. merediths heart beat for derek'. And also in season 16 at her trial she said 'you killed the love of my love'. Deluca realized that she would never love and respect anybody else how she loved respected and loved derek. You can see in season 17 the derek and meredith the beach scenes she loves derek with all of her heart and his death was already more than 5 years ago.
I think the time she spent with him on the beach was helpful to her though. She got to say goodbye properly and talk to him and I think she left feeling like Derek would truly be OK with her living her life and trying to be happy.
Ellen and Patrick went on a hike together and she asked him if he would come back for a few episodes. When Ellen and Krista were planning the beach scenes Patrick was the first person to come to Ellen's mind cause Derek would always be Merediths love.
