Getting to literally jump into a new job doing AD migration. 1st day is tomorrow! 2nd day is going to be right into the fray. I'm excited to transition from site to site electromech troubleshooting. Wish me luck. Your teaching style is amazing. Thanks!
Hi, Nick i have seen almost every major topic video you created to counter check on our technique and get various thing to keep for us. Thus i found your video very helpful in terms of detail explanation regarding every topic you made for those who are in the filed IT & Acting as Admin somewhere to cope at their end on a quick way. Overall provided info, clear voice and step you created relevant to topic are quite good. Keep providing more tips & tricks. Thanks
thanks again, i have promoted server 2012r2 to dc, gc and dns all objects replicating ok now the current sbs was used mainly for emails ie exchange. should i still be worried about "All the applications, services and data that are installed or configured on SBS machine (Exchange, SharePoint, File Server Terminal Server License etc.) we need to transfer them on to 2008 R2 DC or member server’s depending on the nature of the application". I am migrating exchange for sure but the other apps should i be worried about them too? like wsus, sql, sharepoint and all that which were never really used?
You sir are AWESOME ! Absolutely excellent tutorial! Thank you so much, saved me a lots of time, explained a lots of features, I will definitely watch more of your videos! Once again, thank you and keep it going, you ROCK, best regards from Czech Republic!
Thank you Emmanuel, do not forget there are few important prerequisites to check first - blogs.technet.microsoft.com/infratalks/2012/09/06/transition-from-small-business-server-to-standard-windows-server/
what if i changed by typing the schema version directly on the regedit and not doing an adprep? because now when I try to do the migration the final stages are not successful
Very informative. Please make a video on AD migration from 2008 R2 to 2016. Do we get FFL options as 2012,2012R2 and 2016 when we migrate AD from 2008 R2 to 2016.
Great tutorial.... is it possible to move the FSMO roles to the domain controller running Windows Server 2012 R2, but to keep other domain controllers running Windows Server 2008 R2 as secondary, if there are any?
Excellent video, Nick, Can you also show us the procedure to upgrade/migrate 2008 r2 to 2016 AD. Would the procedure be the same. And what if I am having 2008 r2, 2012r2 AD, and ADC in the environment and now I want to bring in 2016 domain controller and decommission 2008 r2, what are the things that I need to take care. Also, please highlight on meta data clean up, when is it required or the clean up is taken care automatically if we follow this video etc. This question is real production environment requirement so any help would be much appreciated...
Hello Nick , thank you so much for your greatest video's , please sir i have one problem , when i tip the following command : adprep /forestprep i have this error : Can not open adprep.dll.mui Did you fail to copy over the adprep language folder please help me
What if you want your 2012 DC to replace your 2008 using the same name and IP? Do you simply change the name and IP of the new 2012 DC server after demotion of the old 2008 Server?
Hi David, I would not re-name a Domain Controller as it can cause issues in the future. What would be a safe bet is: 1. Transfer your FSMO roles and other roles to another Domain Controller 2. 2. Shutdown Domain Controller 1 and monitor for any issues. 3. If no problems, demote Domain Controller 1 and disjoin from domain. Remove server from network. 4. Install and promote Domain Controller 3 (2012) with the same name and IP. 5. Move all FSMO roles and other roles to Domain Controller 3.
Hi, I need my same domain name and IP address for the new 2012R2 DC/DNS after migration from old DC/DNS 2008R2. As per your video, the new domain name is changed and IP address too. Kindly guide me how to change or remain same the domain and IP address same. and also guide how to create the Additional Domain controller after migration from old to new domain. In my Datacenter I have managed the DC with ADC too in 2008r2 and need to migrate in 2012R2
If "migrating" from Windows Server 2012-ADS to another WS2012-ADS, Your AD-Scheme stays the same in version, So it is not really a "migration", but more a "move" of the FSMO-Roles from one machine to another same build machine.
Can you please provide the step for migrating ad to different domain.for example I want to migrate .com domain to .in from 2k8 server to 2k12.If you can have step please share the link or video. Thanks in advance
Hi Ayaz, well in general you will need to: 1. Build new domain controller on Windows Server 2016 (will extend schema to 2016). Make sure replication is working and all system shares (netlogon and sysvol) are replicating ok. 2. Build a new server and install Exchange 2016. 3. Move all user mailboxes to the new Exchange 2016 server. Move system mailboxes. 4. Move mailflow to the new Exchange 2016 server. 5. Move all FSMO roles from the domain controller. Move DNS and DHCP services if any. Run DCdiag on old and new servers and confirm all is working and there are no warnings. Check replication. 6. Shutdown old exchange server and confirm everything is working. 7. Uninstall Exchange from old server. 8. Shutdown old DC for an hour and confirm everything is working. 9. Demote old domain controller.
Good, Simple, well done explanation video. However the English pronunciation could be a lot better, are you from Finland, you sounds like to be Finish...? ;)
Excellent tutorial. You, sir, must be protected at all costs!

Hi Emmanuel, no you should not worry about them. Migrate only the applications that are being used and will be used in the future.

Hi Francisco, yes it is possible. The main thing to note is your domain and forest functional levels will be maximum Windows Server 2008 R2.
Thanks for useful video. I have Exchange Server 2010 in my environment. Is there any point to follow during migration?
Excellent video,
Nick, Can you also show us the procedure to upgrade/migrate 2008 r2 to 2016 AD. Would the procedure be the same. Many, Many thanks - fantastic video. Any change of a video about AppLocker for Windows 10
Thank you, John! Yes, AppLocker will be discussed in future videos when working with Group Policy, so stay tuned!
If i migrate active directory ,will migrate DHCP ,DNS too? If it does, then why to migrate DHCP seprately?
Hi, AD and DNS (Integrated) should be migrated at the same time. DHCP is still not AD integrated and will have to be on a separate migration.
Are these instructions much different for migrating AD from Server 2012 to 2012?
If "migrating" from Windows Server 2012-ADS to another WS2012-ADS,
Your AD-Scheme stays the same in version,
So it is not really a "migration", but more a "move" of the FSMO-Roles from one machine to another same build machine.
Thank you for your input Who am I.
Can you please provide the step for migrating ad to different domain.for example I want to migrate .com domain to .in from 2k8 server to 2k12.If you can have step please share the link or video.
Thanks in advance
Hi Rajesh, I will make a video on the topic. Stay tuned !
Thank you
Thank you Maikel!
Hello.. :) do you have any video to explain on how can i migrate AD from VM to physical server
Hi Mohamed, this should be fairly easy and pretty much the same. You just need to make sure all AD data has been replicated to the physical server.
Very nice information.
I am from India and need your help clear some doubts on this topic. Is it possible to talk on call or facebook or Zoom?
Great
why adprep /domainprep was skip?
Hi, with Windows Server 2012 the wizard does Forestprep/Adprep for you. If you do not trust it, you can still do it manually.
Sir How to Migrate ADDS 2012 with Exchange server 2013 to Window Server 2016 G2
Hi Ayaz, well in general you will need to:
However the English pronunciation could be a lot better, are you from Finland, you sounds like to be Finish...? ;)
Thank you Who am I, this is a first. No I am not Finish, but have never been mistaken with one :)
what about to migrate DHCP role?
Hi Shashikant, this will be covered in the future.
This isnt a migration. Migration involves ADMT tool. This is just basically just an upgradation from 2k8 to 2k12.
Hi Celladmin, Cross-domain migration involves ADMT. blogs.technet.microsoft.com/canitpro/2014/05/27/step-by-step-active-directory-migration-from-windows-server-2008-r2-to-windows-server-2012-r2/
