  • Kata training is a way to learn and practice our basic techniques, so that we can make important connections between techniques. This video offers additional ideas to expand our kata practice by using Taikyoku Shodan and Heian Shodan as a base for further study.

I now practice Shorinryu and my school teaches Taikyoku Shodan, Nidan, and Sandon (although they are just referred to as 1,2, and 3). It was only the other day did I discover Shorinryu is the parent style of Shotokan! awesome!

Partially, it is mostly the crispness Sensei is exhibiting when he snaps the strike or block with maximum focus at the final split second of each movement. The uniform does make the sound, but if the technique is not proper you won't get the "whip crack" sound.

New subscriber here! I had the honor of learning a little Shotokan this semester in college and we have to do this kata for our final tomorrow. I would like to find a dojo in town to continue training :) I like the style a lot! I have a black belt in Wado Kai karate but would like to expand my learning :)

In 2001 the shotokan dojo I attended used the same thing for yokogeri practice, except that the original gedanbarais were replaced with yokogeri djakuzuki. The punches were changed to a step forward djakuzuki. The turns were tricky the first time.
I love the ideas in this video. I just have the urge now to try some other kata bekwards too.

Question the pattern in your movement you established in this video. Is it the same pattern for any type of kata?
