De Niro in Once Upon a time in america, when he played as an old man, really broke my heart. He really knew how to put on an act of an old man who's made many terrible mistakes in his past.
Jose Mourinho See the film, man. If we told you, you wouldn’t see it. It’s a long, long film but it’s so worth it. If you genuinely appreciate the art of film, you’ll be completely bowled over.
The original shooting-script, completed in October 1981 after many delays and a writers' strike that happened between April and July of that year, was 317 pages in length. At the end of filming, Leone had about 8 to 10 hours' worth of footage. With his editor, Nino Baragli, Leone trimmed this down to almost 6 hours, and he originally wanted to release the film in two movies with three-hour parts.
He's a man of few words in interviews but his craft is on the big screen. If there's somebody living in a cave somewhere who is unfamiliar with his work they would never think this quiet and humble man was responsible for some of the greatest characters in movie history.
After godfathers, mean streets, and Scarface, Sergio Leone still managed to make a great gangster movie based on friendship , betrayal, greed and sex.genius

It is the only movie that I know of that is far superior to its source material. It's a good and pretty exciting book. But what makes the movie great is all of Leone's imagination. I first saw this movie thirty years ago and it is 5 hours long. So good it explains life brilliantly. I.did not understand about the significance of life then but I do now. So emotional and tells about love, betrayal, greed, jealousy, drugs, gangsters, power and becoming wealthy and rich and poor and miserable.
It’s a shame what happened to this movie. Originally Leone had an eight hour film, which he shortened in to six hours, made up of two three hour movies. For whatever reason, this was cut down into the 269 minute cut (Leone’s intent), but for Cannes 1984 this was cut to 229 minutes, which was released in Europe. Then when it was first shown in America, it was shown for critics. The only cuts made were to some violence and the two rape scenes. Then, without Leone’s permission, the Ladd Company had that version of the film completely recut and re-edited, removing about 90 minutes from the film, including the final scene with ‘secretary Bailey’ and re-worked the film to being in chronological order, that version saw a wide release in the US and it was destroyed by critics and audiences, notably Roger Ebert who called it a ‘travesty’ as well as ‘an incomprehensible mess without texture, timing, mood or sense.’ Ebert and his colleague, Gene Siskel also went on record praising the original cut of the film on their show, Gene even saying the uncut version was the best film of 1984, and the edited version was the worst. It was only after Leone’s death in 1989 that the restored uncut version was seen by many in America, and it began to receive more of that praise. Then in 2012, Leone’s intended 269 minute film was announced to be shown at Cannes, however, only 251 minutes were shown due to rights issues, this is the 4 hour 10 minute extended cut. Maybe one day we’ll see the original 8 hour film, unlikely, but maybe. If not, we’ll always have the 229 minute version, and maybe one day the intended 269 minute version. In general, Once Upon A Time In America is likely one of Leone’s finest works, a true epic crime classic, at least in my opinion, I could see why someone wouldn’t like it.
That bit were Connolly and secretary Bailey are in his office before de Niro arrives brought more meaning to the ending…the released cut left all that out and when he jumped into the bin lorry you were left thinking…where’s the context behind that.

which retained the film's non-chronological order but still left out several key scenes. The 139 minute American version was the version given wide release in America. Heavily edited by the Ladd Company against Leone's wishes, the film's story was rearranged in chronological order. Most of the major cuts involved the childhood sequences, making the 1933 sections the most prominent part of the film. Noodles'
1968 meeting with Deborah was excised, and the scene with "Secretary Bailey" ended with him shooting himself (albeit offscreen), rather than the famous garbage truck conclusion of the 229-minute version. This version flopped in the US and many American critics, who knew about Leone's original cut, attacked the short version viciously. Some critics compared shortening the film to shortening Richard Wagner's operas, saying that works of art that are meant to be long should be given the respect
A lot of times those are inserts. When there’s one camera you can’t switch back and forth like that, so a lot of times they shoot false reactions after the fact and the key is to just nod and smile to keep the flow and break up the shots.
Finally watched the extended cut in its entirety. shortest 4 plus hours of my life, and among the most sublime film experiences I've ever had. Greatest gangster movie of all time, absolute masterpiece. I would kill to watch the 6 hour cut.
The producers refused (partly due to the commercial and critical failure of Bertolucci's two-part Novecento) and Leone was forced to further shorten the length of his film, resulting in a completed (i.e. scored, dubbed, edited, etc.) film of 229 minutes. Many people (including film critic Richard Schickel) assume that the flying disc scene was part of a longer sequence. Roger Ebert stated that the purpose of the frisbee scene is to establish the 1960s timeframe.
The studios decided it was better to reap the rewards by funding cheesy movies back in the day instead! This is one of, if not THE finest films released in the eighties!
The two critics are wrong about the significance of the frisbee scene. It is not part of a longer sequence and serves its purpose completely. It is definitely not there to clue the viewer in to the decade.
This movie is truly a wonderful film and of course you have A Legend in Robert De Niro involved in it as well. A fine Legend himself James Garner once said that the actor James Woods was the Finest Actor he had the pleasure of working with....nuff said right there.

This film shows you the life of 4 friends who end up taking the wrong path and by the end each one of them paid it their own way, no glorification just a solid look into the world that you should avoid at all cost and make you look at your life and your past and present. It's more than just an epic crime film, in a way it's a film that lets you have a conversation with yourself. There is many ways to express the way this film makes you feel, but they do not make movies like this anymore. Sergio Leone will always be one of the best to ever do it, just because he created this Masterpiece of a film. Also, R.I.P to James Hayden who portrayed Patsy in the film, unfortunately he overdosed on Heroin shortly after this film, he could have become a great actor.

Elizabeth Montgomery was who Robert and James were both in love with when young. Robert never knew his best friend who he loved also wanted Roberts girlfriend until he became grown man and 29 years later his best p friend he loved took his girlfriend and had child, took his money and ruined Roberts life. Robert became poor on drugs he thought he killed his best friend to protect him. James Said I planned to ruin your life when we we're teenagers. Robert still loved his friend. James had become rich mayor.
They call these shots "noddies" in the industry- usually used to cut between two shots of the interviewee so you don't see the gap in the filming. But in this case it's showing both individuals. Bit wierd.
This is one the greatest examples of why directors(and actors) hate producers. They come in with money and 0 talent. Hence why independant movies blew up in the 70s and 90s cause they didn’t have to deal with «money lenders» so to speak. Since the end of 90s, movies have reverted back to the old habbits where the only things that get financial backing are either reboots, remakes or brainless superhero movies that will pay themselves off on account of already being popular with kids and teenagers and grown-ups with kids who grew up on the said classics/comic books. Hence no artistic integrity or personal movies whatsoever(always few examples to the rule like Paul Thomas Anderson and QT).

Ironic that this interview was also cut up and shortened. Great stuff none the less.
It's amazing how shy this man is, yet he can play just about anything and anyone. Hard watching him lose himself over that politician. I don't care for him either but no politicians (NOT ONE) are worth getting an aneurism over.
it's out as far as i know and the restored scenes are on youtube already
Anyone know where you can get the original 6 hour version?? I have the 220min version but would love to see more.
Sergio great direttore
Grazie Maestro for your sound and beauty in the films...😘🙏Heaven will now know the best in film's sounds
Best Movie I Ever Seen
Gr8 movie very underrated
The interviewer is a French man, I used to see him on the Tv 5 monde channel. Very prolific interviewer
are you talking to yourself?
Mr. Uploader cut the questions for sure while editing the video, he probably does not know French? Since the questions were put in French not in English. the interviewer name is Patrick Simonin, editor in chief in TV5 channel, a french public media service.
Thank you for the name. I remember him now!
Is there a follow up interview?
Can we get those extra 26 movies on bluray please
Qualcuno che fa un riassunto in italiano please?
agostino mariella mi hai tolto il commento di bocca
I wanna see it with just the interviewer talking
Why don't they ever air this great film?
Violence and it's very long.
Tommy Vercetti u mean violence in general, or the violence in the movie?
Juan Gonzalez yeah I think he means violence in general
+mike d I'll guess most people have too short of attention span LOL
+mike d Dude, it's like four hours long! Do you know how long it would take you to watch the whole movie intercut with commercials every 20 - 30 minutes?!
I respect De Niro as a great actor ... one of the best minus the politics
They edited out the interview questions its not that hard to figure out
Let's go Braydon.
De Niro has so much range.
The film was incredible how realistic it is, except for the car dive, they were underwater talking LOL.
Volumes a bit low
will this version be comming out anytime soon
I wonder would he give me a gig in one of his movies Mr de Niro
why does the camera keep switching to the interviewer just nodding? he doesn't even say anything just nods with his mouth slightly opened
YEP..MY NYC PAL..JACK WEST HOLLYWOOD
I wish I know what Michael44 thought of his
So does this mean that a longer version mabey will come out?
I heard that there was a 600 minute version from this movie, i hope i will see that one ever in my life.
Friend made this suffer for 20 years invited him to his mansion and Robert realized his friend faked his death and made Robert think he killed him and he took everything from Robert. James Said I planned to ruin your life when we we're teenagers. Robert still loved his friend. James had become rich mayor.
They call these shots "noddies" in the industry- usually used to cut between two shots of the interviewee so you don't see the gap in the filming. But in this case it's showing both individuals. Bit wierd.
Dawm good i interview
Ladies and gentlemen......the Moovie

@G.I. Jew - American Hebrew it is
Lol love the editing
Who jumped into the rubbish truck in the last minute of the film?

Mito
