- Tony Maiden, Rufus, one of the world's funkiest guitar players. It's always great to hear Tony play, he's one of the most original, rhythmic guitar players we've ever heard! Decide for youself...

Prince says hes the one he learned rhythm guitar from. Incredible
Yep...Sure did....see pg.22 of his book 'The Beautiful Ones' . Reading it right now, which is what brought me here.
I definitely believe it and see/ hear the influence!!!
Prince pulled from a lot of greats which in turn made him great
That is wonderful to know.
Guys we are living in the end times rn
Jesus can return anytime soon. SO PLEASE TURN TO THE LORD
He's waiting and Loves you very much ✝️
he just can't stop doing rhythm... rhythm is accidentally coming out of him the entire time he's trying to talk... music is just part of this man's body... I'm in awe of this kind of talent
Unreal... this guy is an unsung legend of FUNK
I love how Tony builds the conversation with a simple note growing into a groovy chord, then descending into funky madness. Out of this world
Hugo Siqueiros he also stops the conversation by playing whenever the guy was trying to speak, there is a time and place for talking and that wasn’t it
When I was young, I wanted to play like Eric Clapton. Now, I want to play like Tony. I don't know why, but as I get older, I get deeper and deeper into the funk.
Can confirm most Caucasian Boomers enjoy funk/blues 🤩
I would love to see someone make a video of him sitting down and playing like this for an hour.
Lord hammercy would be inspiration forever
Damn son, this is impossible to watch just once. Nice to see that old funk is still alive and well.
Jonathan Dubose Jr., Jesse Johnson, Tony Maiden ... two of my Deep flavorite Soul-Funk-Gospel-Jazzy GEMS !
Damn, he's just pouring that funky groove, sounds bad ass
bakerXderek yes he does 👍
chyeeeaaaaa
haha damn dude, didnt expect to see you here!
bakerXderek hi daddy
I love this guy ! Could yall see Tony Maiden, Ray Parker, Paul Jackson, and Nile Rodgers in a guitar elimination bout ! What the Funk!! Who would come out on top??
Rufus..On guitar Tony Maiden. Bobby Watson on bass...You got the love..Give the strength..Once you get started...Sweet Thing...Jive Talking. Two of my favorite sessions musician to listen to. Tony is an underrated funkster. Thank you, Rufus and CK for all the great music in them good ole days and even today.
It is something when you come across something that hits you in the gut like this. Tony's parts on all of those early Rufus featuring Chaka Khan albums just sends me! Tony, I heard you play a little Right is Right in there! Pack'd My Bags, Blue Love, Earth Song, Close the Door, and many more. I'm speechless. Tony, I hope to meet you one day and yes my name is really Rufus!
Wow your a OG. you actually hear those songs in his playing. I’m gonna check out those songs on Spotify
Wow, what a treat to that man play. One of the greatest of all time and doesn't use a pick. That is God given talent. Thank you Rufus,
God bless you man!!!!
You cannot buy it, you can learn some of it - but you have to have it.
This man for sure does.
Haha nice comment 👍🏾

Every year I come back to this video, such a incredible player man
A joyful non-noise:-) You can't resist nodding your head to this..
Rufus really was a fantastic band, these guys had SOUL!
the entire vid is amazing but the jam he does at around 2:22 really warms my heart. tough as nails jack!
That dude just put the biggest smile on my face and a few new licks to learn. Ty
Every time Norm starts talking the dude starts playing haha... "Shut up and play" as they say.
Danny James yeah he did

LOLL!!! He is awesome!!!
Now THAT is the type of player I'm talking about; He's playing a classic sound but with a lot of his own style. More of these cats.
Tony IS classic, man!
incredibly Funky !
Many thanks for putting a light on Tony !
So funky his scarf was getting down!
Un-freaking-real! That was mind blowing guitar playing. I love it when the way I look at something changes.
i can't count the times I came back to this video !! That's what you hear on these rufus records....
Met him in Norway once. I happened to have the same guitar as him at that time. Believe it or not it was a Steve Lukather Ibanez. He was playing with Randy Crawford. Staying in the Hotel we were playing at
when I first started playing guitar ten years ago at the age of 18, I met this fella and I remember I asked him how long he had been playing because I wanted to know how to play like him and he chuckled and said something along the lines of "young man, I've been playing over 30 years, longer than you've been alive" I always remembered that because at the time I was learning jack Johnson songs which had some percussive playing in it and yeah, this is cool to see thia video and that I actually met someone who was widely regarded as a great guitarist, as he is and couldn't tell by talking to him because he was so chill and genuine. cool dude...stay woke
Tony Maiden, Thanks for this great, sunny and awesome song!!! Your groove is insane!
Thanks from Brazil!
i love this guys playing, it warms my heart. very colorful note choices.
WOW !!!!! Incredible the man is gifted
That last groove is so nice. 2:23
No I'm more thankful than words can say for your show thank you so much thanks again
I loved every second of that playing. Nice job. Totally awesome Tony.
Gawd! No pick, no effects, all TONY. Thanks!
not to be a dick, but there's a mild reverb
eksha xD
And not even his axe! It looks like he's just playing something off the wall.
THE GREAT MR.JIMMY NOLAN AND MR CLARENCE "GATEMOUTH" BROWN WERE THE ULTIMATE RHYTHM GUITARIST THAT ALSO PLAYED WITH THEIR THUMBS AND LET'S NOT FORGET THE GREAT MR.WES MONTGOMERY.
Love Gatemouth Brown, saw him all the time in Austin in the 70s.
I saw Tony live in the late 70’s in Frankfurt Germany I was only 13 and a fan! Loved Chaka Khan playing drums too!!
Look at the frets on that tele - that guitar has been well loved!! and rightly so. What an absolutely beautiful guitar. Great playing.
Cannot get enough of this. That right there is how to lay down a funky groove.
Just oozing funk, sounds fabulous.👍👍
Holy frig - could listen to this guy all day.
This is the best thing i've seen in awhile!
A truly unique guitarist!
Tony's the man a great player and a great cat. Youngsters watch and learn
Frank Stallone Official just watched the video of that 40’s epiphone you were gifted by sly. What a classy guitar!!
u wish u were Frank
Watching Learning
For years I thought the opening Guitar riff on "You've Got the Love" was Tony Maiden, but my mind was blown when I learned that it was Ray Parker Jr
Another "pick-less" guy.
Man oh man - now this was something. Awesome. Thanks for sharing.
His guitar playing AND vocals were top notch in Rufus. Missed that band!
I could listen to him play all day!
I love Tony Maiden I am huge Rufus fan. You can hear Tony all in Prince’s rhythm playing. Magnificent!
The man's unstoppable! Lol
Loved this video, thanks for posting
I freaking LOVE that dudes groove! Inspired!
Never knew you could get that tone out of a Telecaster.... this really was THE guitool for any working musicien.
One of my all time favorite rythm guys. Listen to the early Rufus albums if you don't know. Tony also sings with Chaka on a few and he's the talk box man on Tell me something good. Tremendous musician!
He also a damn good bass player also
erik dennard Never saw him play bass...but not at all surprised. Back in the day, it was Bobby Watson holding down the bottom, Andre Fisher on the skins, and Hawk Wolinski on the keys. Rufus was hard to beat back in the day!
Love his playing!
Then, now, and here.
I went to a Rufus/Chaka gig at the old Circle Star Theater in the Bay Area way back in the day. A medium sized venue where the stage was in the middle of the circular theater and rotated slowly during the entire show so everybody basically shared the same view.
Anyways, when Rufus came on, Chaka was sloppy drunk on Hennesy (she said it), and she couldn't handle herself, couldn't really sing a song, and wandered off into the seats and rambled some before they took her away altogether and Tony stepped up and sang the rest of the show. I remember he sounded good, I was impressed, but nobody was too happy that night. (pretty sure Lenny White and Twennynine opened)
Oldskool Funk Let's not forget Kevin Murphy on keys too.
groundhog713 Yep...and Hawk Wolinski. Of course...the whole band was amazing...!
Norm you are one cool guy. You love people and it shows. I'm from Music City in Bflo N.Y. God bless you friend.
there are so many great players out there that people just don't know about that were holding down the rhythm and doing fills and short solos in so many R&B and soul bands.they did stuff that these shredders of today couldn't do in a million years. Playing in time is one of them and the other is getting funky!!!
I just came up on two Rufus LPs. So funny to come across this the same day.
damn !! such a cool funk sound it gave me chills. Love that man !
Unreal guitar player and as always norm your a Class Act and always beautiful host
Great video. I've been practicing these licks since I first saw the video.
Wow!! First I was pleasantly surprised when seeing Wade Williams and now seeing Rufus! I'm a vinyl fan and collector and just a few days ago had Street Player on the turntable. Great record! Listen to Stranger to Love on side 2. Rufus is an amazing... well, he's THE funk player. Again, what a treat!
I saw Tony Maiden on tour with Lionel Richie about 30 years ago. I remember thinking he was amazing THEN!
Great to watch him play ! What a talent.
how cool is this ... as im getting older the more im liking funk .. stay cool
he's bursting at the seams with funk, he can't be stopped! XD
I can't resist a stank face at 1:18. My god what a beautiful sound he makes.
I grew up loving Tony! I play bass and always wished I could have played with someone that FUNKY!! My life long friend Noel Clausson Had the honor to play with Tony and Larry Graham. Tony is the Funk!!!
Great Tony! Amazing funk guitar!!!
Criminally underrated. Tony Maiden is the funkiest.
stratmad He cool but I'd say Prince.
Tony's the funk master!
Simply amazing!! including slap bass emulation and superb single notes and double stops,a most deserved homage to the late Cornell Dupree.M Vico from Havana
Not only is he a great guitarist Tony is s damn good bass player also.
it doesn't get any better or funkier than this! 💯
The ending is absolutely beautiful and nostalgic.
One of my fave RUclips clips, along with James brown giving dance lessons !!!
Absolutely badass!
It doesn’t get any funkier than that. Awesome!!!!!
Love this guy... the whole band was a dream come TRUE
Dude is either really feeling that guitar, or is just crazy about music!
I like that solo towards the end. Very Good!
Outrageous Tony, thank you so much
Man! I could watch this guy all day! Bad Ass!!!

Such a great player, one of the best.
What the funk?!?!?! That was great...
Does Frank Stallone work there now?
I heard Frank Stallone got promoted to cashier at Norms.
Can't wait to see him doing some close ups soon.
Yeah, and Joe B is gonna take over as chief de-stocking agent lol
He's selling girl guide cookies out front, he just came in for a shit.

This man don't want to hear norm flapping his gums, he just wants to play! I watch this video every once in a while just for some inspiration & I don't even play funk.
That was some straight up funk all by it self...go T-Maiden !!!
Wow how can he play that tight groove without pick!? I can’t, even with a pick
Maybe he also plays Bass guitar
amazing guitarist
Funkiest & Fantastic I am blown away.
Great stuff. Love that jazz sound to the end .
