There are also two methods to stop them sending letters which is to issue them with a warning that they are causing distress to an occupier or you can pay a solicitor £70ish or get the citizens advice to issue them a letter warning them that the 3 strikes for harrasment is in effect. The 3rd time they contact you from that point you can have capita in court for harrasment. They stop immediately when solicitors get involved and black list the Address. "What legal obligation does a person have to engage with or notify TV Licensing (Capita) of their exemption from needing a TV licence?" Absolutely none. *Hansard 15th May 2006* *Mr. Holloway* To ask the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport whether those who do not have a television set are required to inform Television Licensing that they do not require a TV licence. *Mr. Woodward* A television licence is required to install or use a television receiver, as defined in regulations made by the Secretary of State, rather than a television set. Members of the public who do not require a television licence are under no obligation to inform TV Licensing of the fact.
I remember a comment in a TV licence youtube where someone allowed an inspector into the house. The inspector asked if they knew how to use the TV equipment to receive live tv. They answered yes. They were succesfully prosecuted. The answer, don't let them in, or don't answer any question.

Thanks BBB! My biggest issue is literally watching BBC iPlayer; some stuff goes straight to that… r they trying to catch us out? We have a tv licence but we do, pretty much, only watch iPlayer… oh and the news if something is ‘kicking off’…! I think the BBC should just do what all the other stations do and have advertising! To quote a meerkat: “SIMPLES”!!! 🤬😢
BBC aren't allowed to take advertising to broadcast in the UK, it's forbidden by government contract. BBC Worldwide (their commercial arm) makes good money selling DVDs etc all over the world but again, they're not allowed to use any of that money within the UK. BBC were also forced by the government to pay for all of the upgrades required to the broadcasting masts and equipment, to allow all TV channels to broadcast on digital services. None of that was funded by any commercial TV company but they all use the network. Digital TV was forced on the network to free up the UHF band for military use, so, by and for the government but paid for entirely by the BBC. S4C the Welsh language TV station owned and operated by Ch4 is largely funded by the TV licence fee too, more just an interesting fact than a valid argument, unless you're trying to learn Welsh.
Create a new Iplayer account. Different name and address/postcode. They can't say you need one by linking your account. If you want to watch live TV then make sure you install your antenna in the loft and make sure your TV can't be viewed from someone looking into the window. Tell them you don't need one and don't let any enforcement thugs into your house. Job done 👍. I have never ever paid for a TV licence in my entire life.
To elaborate this counts for watching a stream of anything online that is simultaneously being broadcasted on live TV, just because you aren't watching the TV broadcast you are still technically watching live TV. To be honest, unless you watch sports or are avidly into BBC productions, I don't know why anyone pays for the license.
I ceased buying a TV licence in 2006 and don't miss live TV at all. A massive saving of over £2,000 so far. Another reason for stopping is my protest at ridiculous salaries to presenters, and more recently, the use of offensive language on entertainment programs broadcast at 1830, weekdays on Radio 4. Occasional hotel stays and looking through a TV magazine, allowed me to confirm my view! I only view items on RUclips, or similar free to view internet based content, and I buy DVD videos 10 for £1 from charity shops or occasional sets from online suppliers (DVDs don't get erased). I watch my choice of interesting channels such as this. Thanks for another great video.
It's so strange that there's now more swearing on broadcast TV than in RUclips. Well, left-wing political pundits can swear all they like, the rules aren't applied to them.
Goon tried to state he had seen a tv from the street when i pointed out that he would require a 30ft long neck to see into my living room he backed down. Same goon then appeared after my partner bought a portable tv for our daughter and asked her by name if she had a licence she replied truthfully with a stern No. The goon proceded to force entey and read my partner her rights. Two mins later i walk in through the front door with a mate from work who is MDP i confront the goon as to whats going on and my partner breaks down in tears. The goon proceeds to inform me she has been cautioned and is being done for licence evasion. I produce my e recipt of payments as its in my name. My mate who is ministry of defence police informs the goon he has 30 seconds to leave or he will arrest him with the intention of handing across to our local force the goon 💩a brick and left like the clappers. He later lost his job for illegally entering our building by means.of.deception and illegally entering our property with my mate giving evidence. Big win for us as these goons will never bother us again. Big win for our building as one of our residents is a police officer albeit MDP.

Have spent a wee while arguing with a friend over the TV Licence today. I said you can't watch ANY live TV on ANY channel without one (e.g commerical channels ITV, C4, C5 and all live and +1 programmes from any cable stations). He said you CAN watch commercial channels with NO licence, as the licence only pertains to anything live/on demand from BBC - and owning the equipment to receive the live broadcasts. Who's right?
I just cancelled my TV license a few days ago got an email stating end of November and the very next day the goons turned up I have cctv and was working from home they came knocked and the female goon saw the cctv pointed at them still knocked just ignored and went away what's shocking is how quickly they turn up I don't watch live TV and only watch Netflix
Andy did the fact they are known as the biggest pea dough file network in recent recorded history not prevent you from funding them at an earlier date? So even after Savile you still funded these leftist sickos?
Cancelled mine about 2 yrs ago, told them i did not want to watch their biased, woke TV. I have subscribed to Netflix and choose my own shows to view. I received 3 threatened letters and an'agent came to my door when i was out, a card was put through the door. I contacted the BBC again and said i had informed them i would not be watching live TV and if they continued to harass me I would get legal advice. Got a letter saying they would contact me in 3 yrs to see if i had changed my mind. I won't.
They don't stop I've had 5 years of the BBC TV Tax letters and they still arrive every month telling me an officer will visit me on a given date - 5 years and still no officer has knocked - all letters in the bin and a sweet FU if an officer ever calls.
Cancelled mine 3yrs ago. As you must plug in the ariel on most modern TVs, they can no longer say. You're plugged in, you must be watching. As the TV won't work without it.
Cancelled mine circa 2008... got fed up with less and less to watch of interest to me, So I use my tvs for DVDs/Blue Rays and You Tube vids (not anything that could constitute a streamed telly broadcast) and I even have some little old b/w sets to watch very vintage stuff on. MILES more fun to be had than watching linear tv folks! :)
UK wtf?! No services can be enforceable in normal countries! No wonder you was kicked out of EU. Seriously, do you need a driver license to own any car? No! NO! I said, "NO"! I can own freaking plane without having pilot license.
I have been seeing people saying you don't need a licence to watch live TV if the equipment used to watch is battery is operated, and doesn't need to be plugged in the mains... Please can you confirm wether it's true or not??
What is considered "installed for the purpose of"? I want to watch DVDs and use a games console on a TV and I don't want to give the BBC a penny for that let alone £159 every year for that. The BBC is a loathsome corporation, but I will never ever hate them as much as they hate me.
you turn on your tv and select a channel, it’s that easy. So why don’t tv manufacturers supply tv’s that don’t give you the option of bbc. It can’t be that hard, if you don’t have the option (app) Then you can’t watch it.
I cancelled my tv licence 9 years ago because I wasn't watching live streaming tv etc. Nor was I happy funding their propaganda. However, I still have to waste time every couple of years completing a repetitive (how many times do you have to state you don't need it?) online "No Licence Needed" form. I have a Netflix subscription and watch a lot of old stuff on RUclips - more than sufficient. One odd thing, though - I have a smart tv, on which I can delete any app _except the iPlayer app!_ - it won't budge. I've not watched it in 9 years and I've no intention of ever watching it. Why don't the BBC just give up harassing people?
In Ireland, its different, its having a device designed and capable of picking up a tv signal , so having a computer monitor and watching an online show , even the national broadcaster, live , no license required, Watching netflix on a television - licence required .. And even jf You alter the tv, so remove tbe tuner , or put glue in the connector - still need a license
I just cancelled and received a £80 refund. Win win. But the guy on the phone said Amazons Freevee as a whole can’t be used. Pretty sure that’s lies as long as it’s not live?
I've not had a licence for almost 13 years. Never signed the NLN declaration. Haven't had a letter since January, or a visit (that I know of) since March 2016, despite since having received several "10 days to get correctly licensed" letters, each followed by a "Your address has been scheduled for a visit" letter. I think they've given up on me. 😁

In 2011 in UK I bought a TV from Amazon and the second day a inspector came to my apartment asking me to pay for a TV license. I told him I bought it just to play PlayStation nothing more I don't want to watch any live channels then he told me you need to pay for a license because you a cable already installed in the apartment.
I don't watch or record any mainstream tv. I don't pay any subscription nor a licence. I remind them each time they send that letter demanding to know if I've got a licence, that I can't afford to watch tv, can't afford subscription nor do I want to. They don't bother coming to the door as I wouldn't open it to them anyway.
What about owning a smart tv where you have free view/Samsung TV plus/live tv available at the press of a button, but you never watch it? You always use RUclips and streaming services? Where would I stand legally with that?
Funny that because the police's idea of reasonable force is to twist your hands, arms and legs into all kinds of uncomfortable positions. What's good for the goose should be good for the gander but that isn't how it works in reality. Any normal person is then done for GBH or Assualt when really you were just using reasonable force.
I have moved into a flat with an aerial wire that is fitted along the floor but I do not watch live tv. I am slightly concerned however, that if an inspector turned up and they see the wire is there - even though it’s not connected they may not accept it is not in use. And I don’t see why I should have to remove it and damage the floor/wall. Any thoughts?
What if it's live TV from another country? I do watch live TV from my home country... It's not availabile in the UK. I just watch it on my phone via VPN. Would that require a license?
I havent paid for over 10 years. I actually wrote to them saying house was getting work done and no tenants lived there. Chsp replied saying ok let us know when tenants back. I only ever get the standard letters no goons as yet. I think its only when they presume to know your name they’ll turn up
I have a 4k 43" TV which I use as a reference/viewing monitor for video editing which I film on my camera, I don't receive any channels and my TV has no aerial connected, so I don't need a license I take. What should I do if they try to tell me I still need a license.
With no broadcast reception it is a *MONITOR*. One simple way to avoid doubt is to remove the TV antenna, assuming it's not in use. In my case, I've removed antennas, associated cables AND wall ports, so that would force the use of a portable antenna.. which I don't have.. and they are shit. 😅
I am a pensioner. Up until recently I have had a TV licence. Now I have decided not to watch live TV or BBC I player, but I have itv and Channel 5 catch up along with Prime , discovery and Britbox. I am not technical. I have managed to delete bbc I player from my screen but I have freeview and all the others above. My question is do they have to catch me in the act of watching live TV broadcast or is the mere fact my TV is still hooked up for it enough to prosecute? It seems a little unfair I have to replace my TV with one that cannot receive live TV? I would like to know your interpretation of the exact wording of the law please. Thank you Jeremy
How can they prove it, though? They don't have the power to enter your home, and they can't track down who is receiving BBC transmissions with any degree of accuracy.
A licence is not required for streaming services EXCEPT if it is a LIVE broadcast eg live football on amazon or itvx or all4 That would be prosecutable if proven
I havnt had a TV licence for years. They write to me every now and again asking me to confirm I still dont need one which is a little annoying but as long as Im not funding them its more than worth the hassle.
Right you're a solicitor so ITV doesn't charge you for watching them so why do you have to pay a TV licence to watch ITV which is a free can you find out and let everybody know
Also, you just go online and sign a form saying you do not need a licence. That way you don’t get threatening letters or visits. As you say ....simple.
There are examples where people fill out online forms to say they do not need a licence, then they get a reply saying that the email address is being used to access BBC iplayer. There can be legitimate reasons why that happens that do not mean a law was broken. Unless you are applying for a refund, do not communicate with them in any way, is my advice. They are dis-honest in their intentions.
Except they can just decide to toy with you like a cat may do a mouse. Ignore them at the door/ politely send them on their way and bin the ex-trees they send. Job done.
You still get the letters and the visit. Even after the man who visited marked me down as not requiring a licence I STILL get the letters. Which I just rip up and throw in the bin.
Hope this isn't a silly question. I'll be returning home after a decade and a half away. So without BBC services I don't need one? Or does live tv now include ITV and the others
Same here ,I binned it straight away , im betting it was to the occupier ,even though your name and address was on the declaration when you returned it 😂😂
if someone came up with a device that delayed live channels by say 2 seconds before displaying on the screen,it could not be classed as live or recorded, interesting thought
Would be easier if certain apps like ITVX has a live TV version and a catch up version to avoid any confusion as to why you have an app installed. And / or a requirement for you to enter a licence number or house address before allowing you to know watch I've TV.
Where is the line drawn? Do I need a license to watch someone stream call of duty on RUclips? Twitch? How does this apply to Jake Paul vs Mike Tyson on Netflix? If they streamed it on RUclips instead would I need a license? What is the definition of “Programme” that they’re using to enforce this? Does it have to be of a certain production value? It seems mirky to me
Tv licence is very simple, ignore every letter, never reply. If they knock on your door, either ignore it or open it and once they have identified themselves close the door without a single word.
There was a case a decade or so ago that tested this principle. BB alludes to it but if your TV has the capability of watching BBC you have to pay. The guy that fought it said he never watched BBC channels and lost.
What happens if you get prosecuted? I mean you can’t record live TV to watch it later? How much is a TV license? I mean cable in US is really expensive but I never heard of a TV license so I’m very curious.
Quite a few countries in Europe, and some elsewhere, have TV licences. Each have very different rules and methods of enforcement. In the UK it only pays for the BBC. But without a licence you can't watch ANY TV station while it is being broadcast. That includes stations such as CNN who broadcast their station on RUclips. A completely indefensible rule, but that is the law. More and more people in the UK are turning against the BBC because of blatant political bias. Others, specially younger people, are stopping watching old style TV because they now have many other choices through streaming services. They actually send people out to knock on the door of people who do not have a TV licence. They have no right of entry and no right to demand answers. Consequently, the only people who get caught are those who do not understand that they can tell these people to go take a running jump. They may also try other methods to intimidate people in to a confession, but they are all flawed when it comes to proving anything. If they get in to your house, they may then be able to gather evidence that leads to a prosecution. The licence costs £159 per year. The fine for non-payment tends to be about that same amount. You can't be sent to prison for not having a licence, but you can if you fail to pay the fine.
Genuine question: I haven't watch any BBC production for years ... other than the Blackadder and Red Dwarf cd's that I bought.... I do however listen to Radio 4, while I make breakfast ... I believe I still have to pay for my licence.

"What legal obligation does a person have to engage with or notify TV Licensing (Capita) of their exemption from needing a TV licence?"
Absolutely none.

*Mr.

💯
That's ridiculous considering most uses of a TV these days is for functions other than receiving television broadcasts.
I wanted to frame the letter I got from BBC saying I hadn't logged in for over 2 years and so they were closing my account. No BBC useage for 5+ years

You're correct
You are.

you turn on your tv and select a channel, it’s that easy. So why don’t tv manufacturers supply tv’s that don’t give you the option of bbc.
It can’t be that hard, if you don’t have the option (app)
Then you can’t watch it.
You still need a licence to watch live streaming even non BBC content
In Ireland, its different, its having a device designed and capable of picking up a tv signal , so having a computer monitor and watching an online show , even the national broadcaster, live , no license required,
Watching netflix on a television - licence required ..

What about owning a smart tv where you have free view/Samsung TV plus/live tv available at the press of a button, but you never watch it? You always use RUclips and streaming services? Where would I stand legally with that?
I believe that after they have been asked to leave and refuse, you are entitled to use 'reasonable force' to remove them from your property.
Reasonable force is either ask them to leave & basically calling the police to remove them as that threat alone will do it
Funny that because the police's idea of reasonable force is to twist your hands, arms and legs into all kinds of uncomfortable positions.

Tell me the easiest and correct way to cancel my tv licence please? I rarely watch any tv and if I do it’s Netflix or prime

Thank you
Jeremy
How can they prove it, though? They don't have the power to enter your home, and they can't track down who is receiving BBC transmissions with any degree of accuracy.
They can get a warrant
Does it affect to Gibraltar, Bermuda, BVI, etc??
Successive Governments have failed to address this outdated licence fee. BBC must move to a subscription model.
A licence is not required for streaming services EXCEPT if it is a LIVE broadcast eg live football on amazon or itvx or all4
That would be prosecutable if proven
Do not pay your TV licence. Full stop. Don't. Do not. This is one thing that truly who cares about the law. Do not pay it
I havnt had a TV licence for years. They write to me every now and again asking me to confirm I still dont need one which is a little annoying but as long as Im not funding them its more than worth the hassle.
Right you're a solicitor so ITV doesn't charge you for watching them so why do you have to pay a TV licence to watch ITV which is a free can you find out and let everybody know
Can you cancel it and still have a SKY subscription?
Is it possible that you can do a video of what to expect if you're taken to court but you haven broken the law for not having a TV licence please.
Also, you just go online and sign a form saying you do not need a licence. That way you don’t get threatening letters or visits. As you say ....simple.
I did that still got the visits still got the letters.
there's no obligation to engage with them in any way
There are examples where people fill out online forms to say they do not need a licence, then they get a reply saying that the email address is being used to access BBC iplayer. There can be legitimate reasons why that happens that do not mean a law was broken.
Unless you are applying for a refund, do not communicate with them in any way, is my advice.
They are dis-honest in their intentions.

Ignore them at the door/ politely send them on their way and bin the ex-trees they send. Job done.

No, you need a DNA test 🤨🧬
Would be easier if certain apps like ITVX has a live TV version and a catch up version to avoid any confusion as to why you have an app installed. And / or a requirement for you to enter a licence number or house address before allowing you to know watch I've TV.
Why do you have to pay the BBC for live tv?
Where is the line drawn? Do I need a license to watch someone stream call of duty on RUclips? Twitch? How does this apply to Jake Paul vs Mike Tyson on Netflix? If they streamed it on RUclips instead would I need a license? What is the definition of “Programme” that they’re using to enforce this? Does it have to be of a certain production value? It seems mirky to me
The rules have changed now they are very crafty.
Since a TV licence inspector can sell you a TV licence, does that mean they need a peddlers licence to operate in your area?
Tv licence is very simple, ignore every letter, never reply. If they knock on your door, either ignore it or open it and once they have identified themselves close the door without a single word.
There was a case a decade or so ago that tested this principle. BB alludes to it but if your TV has the capability of watching BBC you have to pay. The guy that fought it said he never watched BBC channels and lost.
I've not paid a TV tax on about 13 or so years and don't plan on doing so
Does live tv include non bbc stuff, such as itv, channel 4 etc?
