Perfect video! I'm getting into my old 04 crf230 and slowly rebuilding her. Got new plastics and tires but noticed when that carb just isn't working as it should. This would be much needed upgrade. So thanks!
Can't wait for to finish this build. I'm looking to do everything as you are. Was wondering what would be better big bore kit or high compression pistion. I haven't found a big bore kit that is both.
i just purchased a big bore 67.5 mm piston (237cc) from WISECO, it raises compression to 10.5. BBR makes one with even higher compression 11:1 but only 233cc.
The 3 lines are just vent and drain lines so they can just exit out anywhere behind the engine, as low as possible, typically in front of the bottom of the shock area. I had to find an L-shaped fuel inlet fitting on EBay, pull the old one out, (not easy) and press the new one in carefully. I’ve seen other guys just grind a smooth shallow notch out for the fuel tube on the frame, (not too deep) that works too. The push cable shouldn’t be causing any problems, I was only trying to save additional weight at the time. I simply removed it, put a small zip tie around the rubber boot on the throttle cable to keep dirt out. Personally, I would just leave it on. Make sure the throttle, throttle cable, all carb pivots are lubed with light oil or silicone spray. Check the end of the throttle grip isn’t too tight against the end of the handle bar making it rub. Good luck!🍀

hi, i have some question as i am doing the same mod. My first question is you says to dremal the intake boot. i noticed that the intake hole on the head is the same as the boot. How is dremaling just the boot helping if the hole diameter in the head is still the same. Di you do anything to the head side, or that side of the boot? Next question. When i went to install the Carb, i had issues with the throttle cable where it attached to the carburetor. the throttle cable was not long enough when attached to the bracket and on throttle resulted in the carburetor slide being part way up. Did you change the throttle cable? or use the same 2 line one that came with the stock?
If you take the boot off the head and place it on the carb, then Looking through the carb towards the boot you will probably see a big lip between the carb and boot now, because carb is now bigger. Enlarge and smooth out the lip area to match, where the carb and boot join together, that’s all. Leave the porting of the actual head intake to the professionals. My head is at the shop now being professionally ported by a friend. For cable: I had already removed my “push” cable for weight savings. I know several people who have done the same with no troubles, as long as it’s lubed properly. It now has plenty of adjustment at the carb. Hope that helps.
@@lowbuckgarage1 Thanks!. the push link didn't look like it was doing much as there was slop in it each time i closed the throttle. However my issue was on the pull side. i ended up removing the throttle cable bracket compared the old with the new one and you could see where it attached to the cable link was further out. This in-turn caused it to pull on the throttle slide so it was about 1/4 open a zero throttle. to fix this i cut the bracket and just welded the connection point closer then re attached. i'm now trying to play with the fuel line where it rubs. I'm looking forward to seeing the difference once i have it running again.

@@autoelectricobarajas8817 At sea level, with more exhaust flow and freer intake you need to go up at least 2 sizes richer on main jet, example: from 120 to 125. You probably said it right enough, I'm not smart with Carbs, I have no idea, why you would point what ( I guess main jet shrugs) in a different direction than it was in, or how, or what it would do differently for the bike. I also assume, you might be putting 150rb forks on the 230 , that will be cool. I think the 230 is what I'm narrowing my search down to, I just wish I could get 25 hp out of the motor, vs what stock which I think is between 12 and 17 hp. The rest of the bike would probably work for me, I like the simplicity of air cooled, as well as adjustable valves vs tedious shimming.
@@bikersoncall Given it’s inadequate suspension, the 230 is a great bike; six speeds, electric start, total simplicity, bulletproof motor. The typical Amazon 30mm XL250 clone pumper carb shoots a quick squirt/stream of gas for a second when it first opens, giving the engine a quick boost from low RPM. Many times that nozzle’s stream will be pointed up, down or sideways, and not down the intake port where it belongs. It shows you how to check that in the video. Careful, that nozzle will turn and bend some, but it can also break off. If that stream isn’t aimed down the intake port you’re not getting anywhere near the full potential from the carb. And yes I found some 2021 150RB forks on eBay.

@Low Buck Garage thank you!! I will give it a shot! Just wanted to say that your videos are inspiring! I was about to pay someone to rebuild the forks and I saw your video and decided to do it myself. Eventually, I want to do the fork swap but for now the rebuild will have to do. 😀
DID U PORT MATCH?
Oh yes. You have to or it’s pointless. Just matching the carb boot to head intake is sufficient.
I did just get my fully race-ported cylinder head back from professional. Video to follow for higher compression bigbore, +porting, soon.
1:45 ''the key is to get that nozzle
pointing forward'' ??
Guess I should have said “stream pointing forward” down the port.
Do you have a part number for the elbow inlet you installed?
A neighbor gave me the 90 elbow, but it promptly started leaking so I had to go back to the original. I dremeled out a small notch in the frame and used some thinner tubing which helped a lot. I haven’t been able to find one online yet.
Time for a camshaft upgrade ?
Absolutely. Just can’t decide. Web? Hotcam? BBR…
@OIF/OEF-0341 I went with the web 402. New Honda rockers. Larger intake valve.
@OIF/OEF-0341 still in build phase now but I’ll let you know, including video. The carb, pipe, ignition, air box was was a big improvement but now needs the bigger bore, cam, porting, to really wake the girl up properly.
@OIF/OEF-0341 Yes and no. Great Initial bark off the bottom due to accelerator pump, but slight loss of pull in lower midrange, but then better top end. Overall - much better.
Squish is a puzzle, all I know is higher compression works great on these motors.
None of the xr250 carbs on ebay look as big as the one you have do you have a link?
Looks like it’s still available- price went up about $10

Actually I think this is more like mine, for a lot less.

Nice upgrade!
Little bit of work but we’ll worth it as long as you at least have a pipe and opened up air box.
Hello friend. I have seen your videos for two days and I like them a lot, I bought a crf230 and it has some problems, I would like if you can help me solve them, how can I contact you to send you a pictures, please
What is the problem?
@@lowbuckgarage1 I put a pro tork 788 exhaust on it and it fails at high rpm, I returned the original exhaust because that's how it work better.
@@autoelectricobarajas8817 When changing to higher flow exhaust the carburetor must be jetted. Also make sure air filter, air box is not restricted.
@@lowbuckgarage1 Very well, which jet do you recommend? please
@@autoelectricobarajas8817 At sea level, with more exhaust flow and freer intake you need to go up at least 2 sizes richer on main jet, example: from 120 to 125. And at least one size richer on pilot from 42 to say 45. And move the needle clip down one position.
If you’re at high altitude, say 4000 feet or higher, you shouldn’t have to do anything. Something else may be wrong.
Internals will wear faster with that much more power running through
So instead of a 30 year bike life, you'll get 28......
Exactly.
It’s a Honda, it will now live just short of forever.
cab is type pe30?
PE30 carb does not have accelerator pump, the key to bottom end torque. It’s a clone of an old XL250 carb.
thanks Mr. I usually ride ftr223 in japan
I install pwk30 with throttle valve, shaped like keihin optional valve
no.3.I envy you, live in America. In japan,
no hot camshaft ,no strong valvespring ,no timing key, no timing varnia, without environment device.(haha)
PWK30 is good too.
Japan makes the best bikes! Mr,Honda was a great man a genius.🛵
The hesitation would make this a
'pass' project for me. I don't see a follow
up on this project, if you've done one.
I did get it sorted out with a needle clip move and going up one size on pilot, it then ran great.
But now with all the recent changes; bore, cam, porting, I’m back to the drawing board dialing it in. More testing today. Currently editing the CRF150R fork install vid.
You probably said it right enough,
I'm not smart with Carbs, I have
no idea, why you would point
what ( I guess main jet shrugs) in
a different direction than it was
in, or how, or what it would do
differently for the bike. I also assume,
you might be putting 150rb forks
on the 230 , that will be cool.
I think the 230 is what I'm narrowing
my search down to, I just wish I could
get 25 hp out of the motor, vs what
stock which I think is between 12 and 17 hp.
The rest of the bike would probably
work for me, I like the simplicity of
air cooled, as well as adjustable valves
vs tedious shimming.
@@lowbuckgarage1 Hey sir, what's the brand of this carb? I'm a little insecure to choose... Thanks!
