- Shanghai is where Peter was born and where his family are all from. It's the largest city in China based on population and over the years it's become one of the world's most bustling modern metropolises. If you're planning to visit Shanghai, we've compiled our list of Top 6 Things To Do while visiting this mega city.

There are a number of must do activities in Shanghai so we hope you find our list helpful for ideas on where to go in Shanghai and what to do when you're visiting this amazing city.
1 - Yu Garden
Yu Garden / Yu Yuan / Yu Yuan Garden (yuan means garden in Chinese btw) boasts many eateries. It's famous for its Chinese garden and incredible food and tourist scene, making this place a must visit and one of the best things to do in Shanghai. It's a great place to pick up souvenirs too. Be sure to visit both in the day and night to see all the buildings light up.

2 - The Bund
When in Shanghai, another must visit attraction is The Bund. The Bund also known as Waitan is Shanghai's main waterfront area in central Shanghai, China. Bask in the view of the amazing Shanghai skyline from Waitan. Shanghai is famous for all their different and very unique skyscraper buildings and The Bund is where you can get a fantastic view of all the incredible modern Chinese and western architecture.
3 - Shanghai Museum
If you're into Chinese history, art and culture, another top thing to do in Shanghai is visit the Shanghai Museum. The renowned Shanghai Museum is home to ancient Chinese relics, filled with galleries and exhibitions showcasing historical national treasures. Bonus thing is that the Shanghai Museum is free entry.

4 - Tianzifang
Tianzi Fang located in the French Quarter is an arts and crafts enclave where you can expect to find interesting boutique shops, bars and restaurants. Tianzifang developed from a renovated traditional residential area in the French Concession area in Shanghai and so you can see some of the older residential homes while walking around the many alleyways and side streets. If you love shopping, you'll be spoilt for choice in Shanghai with the likes of Nanjing lu (Nanjing Road) which is close to The Bund. Nanjing lu is great if you're into the whole regular, big, modern shopping malls type environment. Nanjing Road is where the main shopping district is at but if you're looking for something more unique, Tianzifang is definitely a must-visit attraction in Shanghai. You'll be able to find some great souvenirs from Tianzi Fang while enjoying a more boutique shopping scene.
5 - Shanghai Urban City Planning Exhibition Center
A top attraction in Shanghai especially if you're into history and want to learn about how this incredible city came to be, is the Shanghai Urban City Planning Exhibition Center, located on People's Square. This is the perfect place to learn about Shanghai's history and future from an architectural and city planning point of view. The Shanghai Urban City Planning Exhibition Center is also commonly referred to as the Shanghai Urban Planning Museum.

6 - Huangpu River Cruise
One of the best ways to soak in the sights of Shanghai city is to take a boat cruise along Huangpu River. It's one of the must-do activities when visiting Shanghai because of the incredible views of the cityscape. We recommend going on the Huangpu River cruise closer to the evening so you get both the day and night views of Shanghai as well as an epic sunset if you're lucky. We took the regular route down Shiliupu Wharf. Huangpu River Cruise is a great way to relax and soak in Shanghai's cityscape. To get on the boat cruise for Huangpu River, simply visit any of the kiosks along The Bund to get your tickets.

Too bad she didn't get to do the cruise though as that was in a second part of our trip when we returned to Shanghai before going to Cambodia but mum and dad returned to NZ. Bund wasn't too bad when we were there luckily. Or maybe we were just used to the insane crowds after Xi'an and Beijing hahaha

Loved Shanghai. My favourite part was definitely walking along the Bund. Couldn't help but start humming the famous "Shanghai grand" song as I was strolling. Thinking bout all the history from those old chinese triad movies haha

Hahaha thanks Tony 😂👍 yea Shanghai is a really cool city. The food is 🤤🤤 and it's so modern but then you turn a street and it's like old and traditional. Also more foreigner friendly than some other cities in China for sure especially in terms of ease of getting around and about 🙂👍 that model of the city was so cool.. we saw one in Xi'an and thought that was impressive then we saw this one in Shanghai and was like yeah nah that blows it out of the water lolll 😆🏙️

@@PeterandYen Yes, the situation is very critical. In Shanghai it is getting better now. Here in Germany it is not even on the peek. I used to live in Shanghai for more than 8 years and returned end of 2018. My wife is still living in Shanghai.

So cool to go back to your birth place. Shanghai is on our list for sure. $900,000?!!! Whoaaa Very interesting to see the mix of architecture. Tianzifang would be a must for us. I (Maria) would go crazy. We had ice cream made with that candy!!!! The urban planning there is so impressive. And that model is so cool. The cruise is something we definitively want to do. We later found they actually have an entire clothing line too and they do something special to some of the clothes to make it smell just like the candy! When we sniffed it we were like 😮🤩

Got my visa and was all ready to go to Shanghai (was scheduled to fly out in two weeks), but looks like it will have to be another day... flight was cancelled. More importantly, I hope things will get better soon for the people in China... heavy heart for what they are going through right now😢 Thank you again for all the tips and information... it’ll be put to good use hopefully sooner than later. Hope all your friends and family in China are okay...
Aw no that sux your flight and trip got cancelled but might be for the better for now while they try get the whole virus more under control especially since it sounds like it's hard to get out of certain parts of China too and some countries like Australia even temporarily banning flights from China 😕 Thank you for the concern, our family and friends in China are doing fine! Everyone is just being cautious. Hope you'll eventually get the chance to go when things are cleared and under control!

As an English Speaker I would say that China offers an interesting perspective for westerners out there.
Getting a Visa costs about 50 US Dollars per Applicant put there.

Love the lights at night. The British and French architecture is really pretty though. That bridge history reminds me of the Mexico wall, asking them to pay and build their own wall, oh well... politics 🙁 Whoaaaa that's one huge bottle opener 😆 I would love to visit the museum 😄 that's a lot of white rabbit goodies!! 😍
So pretty with all the lights and sparkliness ay! Yea pretty stink history huh.. apparently there use to be a sign that said something like no dogs or Chinese allowed at some public park in Shanghai under the foreign concession which must feel so insulting especially in your own country @.@ glad that's all in the past though and the city has been booming and thriving! Haha ya I went a bit nuts buying the white rabbit products as gifts lolll ending up getting so many 😂

Rn so really good to go to some of the crowded places if ur brave enough, cuz right now the corona virus has scared a lot of the people from these places.

I’m going to Shanghai next month for about the tenth time. But it’s so huge I’ve only seen a little. The first time I was overwhelmed. I always stay in the Nanjing West Road area because I like it and I’m familiar with it

Much like other places in Asia but I think the best store there is their Nike shop. Insanely modern with the coolest basketball court in the middle of the shop. Yea Shanghai is massive ay! We're jealous of all the good food you'll be eating again soon 😁 Have an awesome time!
Peter and Yen I told you in another message I’m staying near Jing An temple. I like Nanjing West Road. Not so crazy about Nanjing East Road. Second time in Shanghai I was the victim of scammers. They like to target tourists. But your videos are all positive and I like that

The population in Shanghai is quite diverse;you have people there from Chinese peasant workers all the way up to American billionaires, which is really incredible.

foreigners were also over that bridge, hongkou was also part of the foreign settlement. the chinese city was the old town, where yu gardens is located. although you wouldn't know it, the history has been stripped from that place.
