Religion is absolutely dying off in America and don't listen to the religious alarmists, we do not need religion to exist. Their just bent out of shape their now being forced to accept what their book of fairy tales says not to nor are being allowed to put fear in you anymore without paying a price for it. Every since the introduction of the internet back in the 90s, religiosity has been taking a big leap backwards. That's they there was a massive shift in the last 20 years.
Recently, atheism is on a decline.
This number is destined to grow. More younger people are unaffiliated. That means their children won't be raised going to church. Then their children. It's a snowball effect where in a couple of generations, this whole notion of religion in this country and of this country being considered a "christian nation" will be something you won't hear anymore. God! I wish that day were now!

I have no religious belief, but it's still immortal to claim that religion is wrong. All people should freely express and believe what they feel is right, because by doing so your belief becomes a truth.

Religion isn't wrong but some of the concepts are wrong. People should however be allowed to believe whatever they want as long as it doesn't hurt others.
Our beliefs are the gate keepers of our actions and what we believe directly informs how we behave. If Religions in America weren't trying to teach Creationism in the class room, or persecute homosexuals, or treading all over women's rights I would not have a problem leaving them to believe in their mythologies. However, they are NOT benign and they have tremendous money and power they use to try and corrupt government EVERY SINGLE chance they get.
Not all Religions are guilty of this. But the big ones with the big numbers are the worst offenders.

First and foremost, why is teaching Creationism such a bad thing?? Secondly, yes, our government does have some corrupt people in it who are women, but I do agree that they should leave women's rights alone, because, come on, they had to fight harder for their rights than men did and the right to vote as well, and that should remain solid, it should not be taken away yet again....

Cenk you're an atheist, you do not believe in any gods, you are also agnostic as you do not claim to know whether or not there are any gods cause you're honest enough to admit you don't know.

In other words: The philosophically held positions of atheist and theist have no relevance. Agnostics neither believe nor disbelieve in Gods. It's also the position that I personally hold.
You cannot believe and disbelieve in any gods. You either disbelieve every god you've herd of or you believe in at least one. There is no middle ground, the closest to that is a deist which believes a god created existence but is either gone now or has no ability to intervene in existence.
Religion will never die even if there was martial law enforcement ppl would still pray to who ever they like.
I highly doubt religion will have a purpose 100 years from now, look at how far we have come already.

The funny thing is, religion flourishes best during martial law because people need hope and God is the hope they look for. But when they figure they do not need hope, oops...where's God?? Oh, he's hiding under that Science book....tragic :) Not saying Science is bad, but it seems that it is becoming a major part of what more people are talking about...it's like, guys, Science is not the only thing...etc.

The book doesn't need to tell you that it exists for you to know it exists. My point was that a book is only proof of the existence of the book, it doesn't prove that the book is right or that what is written in it is true.

I.e. for magnetic fields is not actually a "field", but a distribution of particles. Which shifts states between "existing" and "non-existing". and A processes where a elementary particle interact with the higg's field to gain mass. You may require extensive knowledge into quantum mechanics for full comprehension.
Atoms are particles held together by ridiculously strong forces, but they can still be separated to release massive amounts of potentially useful/lethal energy.
I think the number has drastically increased because since the 1990's, people have gained more access to the internet which allows many people to do their research. In the past were told to believe certain things and were unable to do extensive second hand research. Now we have that freedom which means change of heart in a vast majority of the public.

I meant private property when I said private. There are cases that have been take to court by the ACLU and other groups for church's and individual citizens placing things on their lawn because some people found it offensive. Its illegal, but it's happening. Also, separation of church and state is a supreme court judicial ruling. The first amendment forbids the federal government form forming a national religion, and guarantees freedom to practice, but does not mandate separation of the two.

This abstraction explains all kinds of things, like how you can have a view of reality that seems consistent and stable, when the fact of the matter is that your sensory inputs are anything but. Apologies. Upon reflection, I wrote 'religious extremism' when what I meant was religious violence. Although there is also strong anecdotal evidence as well that religious extremism promotes religious violence. Not watertight, but close enough for RUclips comments.
It's a perfectly satisfactory explanation. The communal aspect of religion is one of the biggest reasons for its success. It provides the social (not the moral) glue that binds many communities together. One of the biggest obstacles people face in discarding religion is the sense that they are abandoning (or will be abandoned by) friends, family and neighbours. Since women are more social, they are more enmeshed in the communities they feel they would be disconnected from.

What funny is that that number is probably higher, but people just dont want to admit it.
The problem with people who chose to select "unaffiliated" joining into a group is that in their minds they would then no longer be unaffiliated.
Small crazy groups like evangelicals will always have relatively more power because an organized group is what gets political power. The evangelicals choose a loosely defined religion because that's an intellectually easy thing to be involved with (not too much smarts required).

None of that means we understand the details enough to duplicate it yet, but there's no question that this will happen within my lifetime. I can easily see staggering breakthroughs here within a couple of decades as some clever guy happens to be able to tie the various research angles together.
... And actually go through with it a quarter of the time compared to men who have fewer friends and smaller social support networks. It most definitely does have a bearing, as does what you talk about with your friends and family.

The fact is that everyone feels the need to love and be loved. Love is my religion. It's hippyish but it's truly what I believe.

Here is another question you can ask people: "Do you believe in a literal god, one that created and controls the world?"

It's just like any other transition we have made through history. Whenever we move from a traditional institution (i.e. religion, slavery, treating women as second class citizens, etc.) to more progressive ideas (secularism and equality for all people) there is going to be some turmoil, but eventually it works out for the better.
Unfortunately the ones who still are religious are getting all the more extreme.

Cenk, you're thinking about this the wrong way. One of the major reasons why I gave up going to church or being part of an organized religion is because of the fact that so many were involved in politics (where they should not be). To get "non-affiliated" people to unite as a political entity would go against what many of us are frustrated with.

In the 90's U.S.A was the number 1 religious country in the world. Today still pretty high up on the list. Though it's also high up on equality, crime, corruption, bad politics, uses of nuclear weapons, wars that are still active, fat people, health problems, People with more than $999,999,999 ,religious people having governing posts, and healthcare cost attributed to insurance companies that have been denied.
Upon further reflection and review of some statistics, the rise of secularism in the US has also strongly correlated with a DROP in violent crime in the US, if you match the rough growth rate of secular beliefs with the drop rate of violent crime. I would reccomend this report:

(p2)note the study refers to the polled as "unaffiliated" which belies the study and therefore your heading "Religion Dying in America"- for religious belief seems to be alive and well and thus religion seems to be alive and well, what the study points to is a loss of confidence in religion as an institution.
But the rate at witch it's growing is awesome, in ten years it will be well over 50%

I think it's because for many believers religion is a social experience which breeds a sense of community, and certainly in the modern age women tend to be more social than men. Numerous studies show that men tend to have fewer friends, tend to spend less time communicating with others (especially in person), and are more likely to be avoidant. Women also tend to be liberals more often than they are conservatives, so the type of believer we are talking about is more likely to be different.
People misusing religion is just a catalyst that makes you think about why you believe. Which usually ends in the conclusion of...who cares
I don't why, but this bothers the hell out of me.
The only way people seem to be trusting each other or connecting with each other, is if they talk to each other over the internet. Then, they also act like entitled to treat others any way they want.
Everyone seems too stupid to understand when they should be fearful for their lives. No one seems to give a damn about preserving their lives. I mean, rape is worse than death??
