Haven't seen this trap before, even though I've followed Shawn Woods = Mousetrap Monday for years. Glad you caught the tomato nibbler.
I bet Shawn would love this trap.
My prediction if Shawn tests this is that the mice and pack rats will be caught but not the brown rats.

@flours it works quite well for brown rats, but just like any trap, there are brown rats who will never get caught in it. Trapping success with brown rats is going to always be hit and miss regardless of the trap you are using. Take it to certain trap wise populations, and all you're likely to catch is a few babies dumb enough to go in the trap. However, the rat shown at the end of this video, has avoided numerous different types of traps, for weeks possibly even months on end. Yet I was able to catch her on the first night of setting this trap!

Rats in my tomatoes is my #1 problem and I almost threw in the towel. All of them beat the bare traps. I dispatched 3 in the twins deadfall box but will be making one of these for the front yard where I saw one looking at me with his beady little eyes out of the yucca plant. Will keep you posted.

Next thing you need to improve the trap is an alarm system so you can immediately empty the trap so the other rats don't learn and get trap wise.

Silly question....any chance you can wire the fence on the neighbors side? Or, dig out your bed and wire it as a deep box, attached to the fence?

coolest trap i've seen in a while. also you should get a cat to train. i've wondered for some time if it was possible to train a cat for hunting, if anyone could do it you could. an extra benefit of course is that they are great at getting rid of property rodents :)

Wow, Joe; if Shawn Woods knows about this, fine, but if not, you should contact him; this is right in his wheel house, and there must be market for something like this, if rightly promoted. Given it is just a jerry-rigged snaptrap-plus-cage, I think it shouldn't be hard to upgrade, especially important for copyright claims.

Brilliant that Joe ye boss that lad av given up trying to catch them live because they have a party with the bait and then when it's set to trap them they don't go in there very very smart they have even got on to the repeater trap big time I'll try that Joe looks very affective that ye sound lad

Question Joe, would mice be able to escape the 16 gauge wire mesh if happened to be caught?
Suggestion for improvement...
Attach a stiff wire to the trip pad extending almost the width of the trap to enlarge the trigger area.
Yeah I've done that before, but it's really not necessary. Even if they steal the bait a couple times it just gets them more comfortable to the area so the next time they are easier to catch. I've experimented with both ways of doing it and come to the conclusion that just leaving it with the little tread plate is just as good possibly better than using the wire
It’s so interesting to me that salt lake county has so many rats. I live in Utah county and have no rats at all but I get raccoons like crazy. I trapped one a few weeks ago and have another one showing up at night now.
Both counties have rats. But they don't typically show up unless they have some sort of artificial food to eat. Raiding gardens like this is not very common.
@@JosephCartertheMinkMan I live near all the old mink farms down here and still never saw them luckily. I have a pretty good sized garden which attracts the raccoons, they seem to like my corn!

I get mine from a local feed store called Intermountain Farmer. Try your local feed/farm store. Tractor Supply seems to be a common wide spread store that might be in your area.

We are in Minnesota
We don't know exactly how much rats we have cause they keep breeding and we have a giant field rat almost size of a cat that breeding them
